OBS October Gets Under Way

A total of 713 yearlings have been cataloged for the OBS October Sale, which kicks off a two-day run Tuesday morning in Central Florida.
Based on the foot traffic on the grounds over the last few days, OBS Director of Sales Tod Wojciechowski is confident there will be plenty of demand for what is on offer.

“We were very busy Sunday and by Monday afternoon we were busy again, so I feel pretty good about what we've seen traffic-wise,” he said.

October graduates don't get much important than Crimson Advocate (Nyquist), who was purchased by Dew Sweeper II from the consignment of Beth Bayer, agent, for $100,000 last fall and has won two of her three starts to date. A debut third to future GISW Brightwork (Outwork) at Keeneland this past April, the chestnut earned a trip to the Royal Ascot meeting when taking out the Royal Palm Juvenile Fillies in May and made the most of the opportunity by posting a 9-1 upset in the G2 Queen Mary S.

As recently as this past weekend, the October Sale was represented by Time Passage (Tunwoo), an $85,000 purchase by trainer Eddie Plesa for his clients Karl and Cathi Glassman, who prevailed in the Miss Gracie S. at Gulfstream Park this past Saturday.

Nothing inspires confidence in a sale than success at the races, said Wojciechowski.

“Absolutely. When you have those sorts of results, it certainly entices a buyer to come in and maybe they can find one like that,” he said.

The October catalog features a diverse cross-section of stallions from Florida, Kentucky and New York, and should have something for everyone, Wojciechowski said.

“More and more we see a better mix of and we also have some of the sire power that has been in favor as of late,” he said. “We have some Mitoles, Complexitys sold well at the previous sales, so the quality of sire continues to grow for us here.

The October Sale comes on the heels of regional events over the past few weeks which posted mixed results year-over-year. At the Fasig-Tipton California sale, which also included a Horses of Racing Age Section, the average was fractionally higher, but the median took a significant dip while one of every three horses was bought back. The average was down slightly during last week's Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Sale, and there remained an uneasiness in the middle market while buybacks also trended a bit higher.

“From the sales standpoint, I think we're going to see what we've seen at the yearling sales this year,” Wojciechowski offered. “The perceived upper end will sell very well and it might get a little thin in some of the middle spots. But there's no reason we should expect something totally different.”

With sessions beginning at 10 a.m. ET, hips 1-338 and supplemental entries hips 339-359 are set to go under the hammer Tuesday, followed by hips 401-739 and supplements 740-755 on Wednesday. Some 37 yearlings were added to the sale after the catalogs were printed.

The Green family's D. J. Stable acquired last year's joint $210,000 toppers, a colt by Mitole and a Filly by The Factor, each bred in Florida.

Champion Wonder Wheel Retired, to Sell at Fasig-Tipton November

Wonder Wheel (Into Mischief–Wonder Gal, Tiz Wonderful), the 2022 champion 2-year-old filly, has been retired after finishing eighth in the July 1 GIII Selene S. at Woodbine, reports Jon Green, the general manager of the owner, D.J. Stables. She will be sold this fall at the Fasig-Tipton November sale.

After clinching an Eclipse Award with her win in the 2022 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, Wonder Wheel struggled this year, going 0-for-4. In the Selene, she was beaten 21 3/4 lengths.

“Wonder Wheel has been battling a couple of minor issues since her 2-year-old year,” Green said. “She had bone bruising and a minor ankle injury. We gave her some time off and did a little procedure on her ankle to take care of a flake. Unfortunately, because she is a 17-hand beast, she continued to have some bone bruising and the same ankle has been an issue. This week, we decided that because she would need some time before we could run her again that we'd pull the plug on her racing career. She's been so valuable to us as a race horse. She's a champion and a two-time Grade I winner. She's too valuable a horse to continue to run her when she's not 100 percent.”

Wonder Wheel was acquired for $275,000 at the 2021 Keeneland September sale and turned over to trainer Mark Casse. She won her first two starts before finishing second in the GI Spinaway S. She returned with a win in the GI Alcibiades S. before her three-length win in the Juvenile Fillies.

“Normally, when you campaign a horse of Wonder Wheel's caliber you're always looking at what will be their next race,” Green said. “You are constantly looking forward. With her, I actually had the opportunity to enjoy watching her run and not worrying about what's next. It really was a thrill, especially the first five races of her career. It was nothing like I had felt before and we have campaigned other Grade I winners and champions like Jaywalk.”

Green said that Wonder Wheel was always a favorite because she was named by his mother Lois. Lois Green passed away in May at the age of 84.

“The reason why Wonder Wheel is so special to me is that my mom, who recently passed, named Wonder Wheel,” he said. “Normally, we don't get too emotional about horses and try to treat it as a business. But Wonder Wheel will always be near and dear to my heart because my mom named her.”

Wonder Wheel won four of eight career starts and earned $1,590,725.

Papilio Scales Heights in Appalachian

Papilio (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) was her own worst enemy when snatching defeat from jaws of victory in the GIII Herecomesthebride S. in her U.S. debut Mar. 4, and she was anything but entirely focused in the dying strides of Saturday's GII Appalachian S. at Keeneland. But she overcame wayward ways to prevail over Cairo Consort (Cairo Prince) in a driving finish in Lexington.

Allowed to find her feet near the back of the field as Heavenly Sunday (Candy Ride {Arg}) outfooted Well Into (Into Mischief) and made play up front, Papilio hugged the fence while a fraction keen turning up the backstretch. Steered into the two path while tugging against Javier Castellano from second last into the second turn, Papilio split rivals approaching the quarter pole and was switched out and around 'TDN Rising Star' Be Your Best (Ire) (Muhaarar {GB}) entering the final furlong. Refusing to chart a straight course and weaving in and out with time ticking away, she wanted to have a good look at the grandstand while trying to win the race inside the sixteenth pole and came in on the comebacking Pleasant Passage (More Than Ready), causing that already beaten rival to check sharply. But Castellano managed to get his mount straightened out in the nick of time for a breakthrough win at the graded level.

The Appalachian was a measure of redemption for the Mark Casse barn, who was shut out on opening day, including an off-the-board effort in the GI Central Bank Ashland S. from champion Wonder Wheel (Into Mischief).

“She has an amazing turn of foot,” Casse said of the winner. “If she ever learns to run a straight line, who knows how good she is? She isn't really a tricky filly. She's actually a sweetie. She just runs in different directions. I think once she 'gets it' around here she's going to be very tough.”

Papilio defeated the boys in two of her first three starts and was runner-up in the Listed Churchill S. at Tipperary last August for trainer 'Fozzy' Stack and Mrs. M.V. Magnier, Mrs. Paul Shanahan and Tom Magnier. She was a midfield sixth behind the exciting Tahiyra (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) and future GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner Meditate (Ire) (No Nay Never) in the G1 Moyglare Stud S. and had the Herecomesthebride all but sewn up, only to hand the race to Danse Macabre (Army Mule).

Pedigree Notes:

The 28th worldwide black-type winner and 18th graded/group winner for her sire (by Choisir {Aus}), Papilio was a €60,000 purchase by Shawn Dugan at the 2021 Arqana August Sale and is out of an unraced half-sister to Balius (Ire) (Mujahid), a Group 2 winner in Dubai, a five-time listed winner in France, victorious at stakes level in Turkey and Group 1-placed in Hong Kong and Singapore. Glafyra is the dam of the 2-year-old filly Feet of Fear (GB) (Ten Sovereigns) and a yearling colt by Cable Bay (Ire).

Champ Wonder Wheel Gearing Up for Sophomore Debut

Every morning at 8:30 sharp, 'The Wonder Wheel Show' takes over Casse Training Center in Ocala. Just after the break, the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies champion and newly crowned Eclipse Award winner takes to a freshly groomed track and flies through her paces solo before regular training resumes.

“She gets her own set,” trainer Mark Casse said with a grin. “She's special.”

Casse's smile grew even wider Monday morning as he watched Wonder Wheel in action. After a day off on Sunday, the daughter of Into Mischief was enthusiastic about getting back to training as she tugged on the bit at a gallop.

Wonder Wheel went through her early schooling as a 2-year-old at Casse's training center and she returned to the Ocala operation following her Breeders' Cup victory. After a bit of time off, she resumed her training. Now, Casse said the D.J. Stable colorbearer is looking better than ever.

“She's training super,” he reported. “She's a tall filly. She's almost 17 hands. I think she has filled out a little bit. When you give a horse time off like we did, it takes them a little while to kind of get back in the groove. But she's in the groove.”

The champ has put in four works in Ocala this year, most recently breezing five furlongs in :59 on Jan. 25 and then going four furlongs in 48 flat last Thursday in preparation for her 3-year-old debut in Saturday's Suncoast S. at Tampa Bay Downs.

“She had as good a work last week as I've seen her ever work,” Casse said. “And more importantly, her training has been really good coming up to this race.”

Along with fellow Casse trainee Ticker Tape Home (Medaglia d'Oro), probables for the Suncoast include Stonestreet Stables homebred Julia Shining (Curlin), who is undefeated in two starts and will be coming in off a win in the GII Demoiselle S. in December.

Casse said he hopes that on Saturday, Wonder Wheel and Tyler Gaffalione can perhaps find a happy medium between their come-from-behind Breeders' Cup performance and the prior wire-to-wire victory in the GI Darley Alcibiades S.

“I think normally if she breaks running, Tyler will have her fairly close,” he explained. “But as she showed in the Breeders' Cup, she can do a little bit of anything.”

According to Casse, Wonder Wheel's road to the GI Kentucky Oaks after the Suncoast will go through Lexington for the GI Ashland S.

Casse has always been enthusiastic in his praise for the big bay, comparing her to the likes of Wonder Gadot, Classic Empire and War of Will as early as last August in Saratoga ahead of her runner-up effort in the GI Spinaway S. (TDN story here). Now that Wonder Wheel has given Casse his sixth Breeders' Cup victory, he remains unwavering in his faith in the talented filly.

“She may be one of the best horses I've ever trained,” he said. “But I don't want to get too far ahead. Let's see how she does going from two to three. We're going to let her do the talking.”
