Starspangledbanner’s Aloha Star Takes the Airlie Stud

Saturday’s G2 Railway S. had shown that quality juveniles can come from anywhere and 24 hours later the point was hammered home by the Bellewstown maiden winner Aloha Star (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) in The Curragh’s G2 Airlie Stud S. Content to wait in behind as the 10-11 favourite Frenetic (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) and the G3 Coolmore Stud Irish EBF Fillies’ Sprint S. winner Mother Earth (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) squared up in front, Chris Hayes who had also partnered the shock Railway winner Laws of Indices (Ire) (Power {GB}) was in the right place as the race unfolded. Bringing the 33-1 shot to bear on the softened long-time leader in the last half a furlong, Aloha Star gave generously as Frenetic dug deep and was able to shade it by a head, with 1 3/4 lengths back to a spent Mother Earth in third.

This renewal was weakened to an extent by the withdrawal of TDN Rising Star More Beautiful (War Front) and of the useful Sussex Garden (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) due to the ground, but the Listed First Flyer S. winner Frenetic was always the one to aim at and little can be taken away from the winner. She had been too free when eighth behind More Beautiful in a five-furlong maiden on debut at Naas June 8 and improved when third again over that trip next time at Tipperary 11 days later. Kept to five for her third outing at Bellewstown July 2, she confirmed the earlier impression that she needed further despite managing to shed her maiden tag on a card that also witnessed a TDN Rising Star performance from Pretty Gorgeous (Fr) (Lawman {Fr}).

“We were disappointed when she got beaten first time out at Naas, but she’s too generous sometimes and ran very free,” Hayes explained. “The lad who rides her out at home, Eddie Cronin, has done a great job and has kept her nice and settled. She probably needed the run at Tipperary, as we backed right off her. The race went to plan today. She was a filly always crying out for that trip and hopefully she will improve. They went quick, but it felt like a piece of work to me because I was able to tow in off them and let the two boys go at it. I had one crack at them. I thought I was probably there 50 yards too soon, but she’s tough.”
Frenetic’s trainer Ger Lyons was in no doubt that the runner-up remains a top prospect and said, “No disrespect to the winner, but she picked our pocket. We were back up again after the line and she is naturally fast, so we’ll roll the dice and have a look at the [G1] Nunthorpe [at York]. I’ve offered that ride to Chris Hayes, as he’s as good a lightweight as there is. Subject to ground conditions, I’d like to have a go at that. She is so honest, you can’t give her an easy time so we’ll concentrate on five so as not to blunt her speed.”

Aloha Star is another winner of one of the weekend’s major juvenile races who looks capable of stretching out on pedigree. Her unraced dam Zain Art (Ire) (Excellent Art {GB}) is a half-sister to the triple listed scorer and multiple group-placed 10-furlong performer Battalion (Ire) (Authorized {Ire}), while the family also features the GII Commonwealth Breeders’ Cup S. winner and GI Eddie Read H.-placed Silent Name (Jpn) (Sunday Silence), the young sire Galiway (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) and the G3 Prix Noailles scorer and G1 Grand Prix de Paris runner-up Slalom (Fr) (Intello {Ger}). Also connected to the G2 Prix du Muguet-winning sire Gold Away (Ire), Zain Art’s yearling colt is by Mastercraftsman (Ire).

Power’s Laws of Indices In Railway Shock

Capping a memorable evening’s racing at The Curragh for Ken Condon, the 66-1 outsider Laws of Indices (Ire) (Power {GB}) brought up a rare group 2 double for the stable in Saturday’s G2 GAIN Railway S. Anchored in last early by Chris Hayes, the June 23 Navan maiden winner travelled strongly through the pack to lead with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining before seeing off the determined challenge of Lucky Vega (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) to win by half a length, with Arctician (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) 2 3/4 lengths behind in third. “I was almost expecting it with Romanised, but it just goes to show the quality of every maiden in Ireland, they can all be strong races,” Condon said. “He’s a horse that always struck us as nice and he’s well entered-up which we don’t do lightly. He gave us the impression he would get better with every run and we’ve not been searching for anything in his fast work at home.”

Laws of Indices had been 80-1 when around six-lengths ninth to Lucky Vega on debut at Naas June 8 and had already made a significant leap forward when accounting for seven rivals including the subsequent Leopardstown winner Vafortino (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) in his auction maiden over five furlongs and 164 yards at Navan. There was no fluke about this display, with the style of his move between runners catching the eye before his rallying effort as the Jessie Harrington runner loomed on his outer in the closing stages. “He’s come in here on the improve,” Condon added. “At Naas he was in the gates quite a bit, was slowly away and maybe didn’t handle the ridges. He took a lot from it and gained a bit of experience. Then he went on to Navan on soft ground and a furlong out you’d say he would be fourth, but he hit the line very well there. Chris gave him a lovely ride today and he’ll get seven furlongs, so that might have been the winning of it. Nine times out of 10, that move that Shane [Foley] made [on Lucky Vega] would win the race but I’d told Chris he’d stay well and he was able to react when that horse came to him. I suppose we’ll think about the [G1] Phoenix, but that dead ground here helped and the six of the Phoenix might be a different test. We’ll see how he comes out of it, but he’d need to be running before the [G1] National S.”

Another bargain buy, Law of Indices is out of the speedy Sampers (Ire) (Exceed and Excel (Aus) who was just below black-type level. She is a granddaughter of the G2 Prix de Malleret winner Privity (Private Account), a full-sister to the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud runner-up Zindari from the family of the G1 Irish St Leger hero and sire Leading Counsel. This is also the family of the dual G3 John O’Gaunt S. winner and G1 July Cup runner-up Main Aim (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and the triple group-winning Weightless (GB) (In The Wings {GB}).

Back-To-Back Minstrels For Holy Roman Emperor’s Romanised

Enjoying the perfect warm-up for a repeat bid in the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois, Robert Ng’s Romanised (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) was at or very near his best to register back-to-back wins in Saturday’s G2 Paddy Power Minstrel S. at The Curragh. Tracking the 10-11 market-leader Lancaster House (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in third against the rail, the 9-4 second favourite was angled out of a pocket by Billy Lee to swamp that rival at the furlong pole. Asserting on the run to the line, the 2018 G1 Irish 2000 Guineas hero who was last seen finishing runner-up in the G1 Prix du Moulin had 1 3/4 lengths to spare over the Ballydoyle runner there, with Surrounding (Ire) (Lilbourne Lad {Ire}) 2 1/4 lengths behind in third.

“We were keen to start his season locally at a track he’s won at before and I’m delighted with that,” trainer Ken Condon commented. “He’s a little bit heavier and a year older and he’d been working nicely without any fireworks–all the signs were very good, but bearing in mind he has needed his comeback runs over the last two seasons I’m very pleased with that. He was not too fresh and real professional and his work had been like that, nice and relaxed. It’s lovely that he showed that on ground as dead and slow as he’d want it and the Jacques le Marois is the primary target. We had a super day there last year and it’s his big aim. Hopefully, he takes this race well and I’m sure he’ll get something from it as he would have been ring-rusty. Deauville’s straight track suits his way of running best and we’ll discuss the rest of his campaign with his owner Robert and racing manager Rupert [Pritchard-Gordon]. He might go to Longchamp again for the Moulin and might end up in Hong Kong later after three runs. He’d still be a fresh horse then, hopefully.”

Romanised, whose Curragh efforts now read three wins from four starts, is a half to the dual listed scorer Fictional Account (Ire) (Stravinsky) and the G3 St Leger Italiano winner Rock of Romance (Ire) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}). The dam Romantic Venture (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}) hails from a Moyglare Stud family and is a full-sister to the G3 Brigadier Gerard S. and G3 Arc Trial S. scorer Sights On Gold (Ire) and a half to the four-times group 1-wining Hong Kong Horse of the Year Designs On Rome (Ire) by Romanised’s sire Holy Roman Emperor, as well as to the GII American Derby winner Simple Exchange (Ire) (Danehill). Galileo’s Son of Mecca’s Angel a New Rising Star

The Curragh played host to another TDN Rising Star on Sunday as Ballydoyle’s newcomer Hudson River (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) made all to take the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden with the promise of much to come. Showing dash from the break to gain the lead and rail advantage under Seamie Heffernan, the first foal out of the dual G1 Nunthorpe S. heroine Mecca’s Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) who was the 3-1 joint-favourite was always doing enough in front and at the line had a comfortable 1 1/2-length margin to spare over Ace Aussie (Ire) (Australia {GB}), with the winner’s stablemate Wembley (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) a nose away in third. “He’s a lovely colt and was just ready to start,” Aidan O’Brien said. “He could go to the [Newmarket] July meeting. He’ll probably end up a miler and it was a nice race to start him in.”

Mecca’s Angel was a useful juvenile, but it was not until she matured that she truly developed into a leading light in the sprinting brigade. Building on wins in the G3 World Trophy and G3 Prix de Saint-Georges to deny Acapulco (Scat Daddy) in the 2015 G1 Nunthorpe S., she returned to the York the following season to bring up a famous brace. She is a full-sister to Shadwell’s Markaz (Ire), who was successful in the G3 Criterion S. and G3 Chipchase S. and who had got off the mark with his first crop a week earlier. A granddaughter of another speedy individual in the G3 Prix d’Arenberg scorer and G3 Norfolk S. runner-up Desert Dawn (GB) (Belfort {Fr}), Mecca’s Angel has produced two daughters of Galileo in 2019 and 2020.
