Harzand’s Caught U Looking On Top At The Curragh

Noel Meade trainee Caught U Looking (Ire) (Harzand {Ire}–Wild Mix {GB}, by Mastercraftsman {Ire}) posted an impressive five-length tally when shedding maiden status at Leopardstown in July and made a smooth transition to black-type company with a landmark success in an attritional renewal of Sunday's G3 Weld Park S. at the Curragh.

The 4-1 chance broke smartly from the outside stall and raced without cover in fifth through the initial fractions of this third start at the seven-furlong trip. Inching closer to the leading duo from halfway, she came under pressure passing the quarter-mile marker and was driven out inside the final furlong to deny Sakti (Ire) (Caravaggio) by a half-length in the dying embers. Long-time leader Brilliant (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) kept on gamely once headed and finished a neck adrift in a close-up third.

“She won easy enough in Leopardstown and there was plenty of interest in her, but Tony O'Callaghan, despite all the horses he has, wasn't for selling,” explained trainer Noel Meaded. “He just wanted to keep her and said to roll the dice and see how she goes. Obviously there is a little bit of pressure on when you do that and [breeder] Peter [Kelly] was happy enough to do that as well. She's a good filly and she's a filly that will improve because she's a Harzand. She's going to be better next year, and probably a mile-and-a-half filly. I know she only just won, but Ger [Lyons] thinks quite a lot of his filly and you are always running against something decent from Ballydoyle. It's hard to win a stakes race in Ireland. Ben [Coen] said she was a little green and leaning away from them in the last furlong-and-a-half. He said she'll come on a ton. With the ground the way it was, it maybe suited her more than the others because of her stamina.”

Pedigree Notes

The March-foaled bay's second dam Mango Lady (GB) (Dalakhani {Ire}) is a winning half-sister to MGSW G1 St Leger and G1 Rheinland-Pokal runner-up High Accolade (GB) (Mark Of Esteem {Ire}) and the dual stakes-placed Oasis Knight (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}).

Book 1 Millionaire Diego Velazquez A New TDN Rising Star In Ireland

Saturday's Bord Na Mona Recycling Irish EBF Maiden at the Curragh has been a springboard to success in the G1 Vincent O'Brien National S. for Al Riffa (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) and Thunder Moon (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}), who annexed two of the last three editions. This year's renewal witnessed the emergence of another potential candidate after Aidan O'Brien trainee Diego Velazquez (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) romped to 'TDN Rising Stardom' in the seven-furlong contest.

He had already caused a stir at Newmarket last October, when knocked down for 2.4-million guineas at Tattersalls' Book 1 sale, but was unable to fulfil a June engagement over this strip after suffering an allergic reaction. There was a buzz in the air for this belated debut and the April-foaled bay was hammered down to odds-on favouritism. The eventual winner was slightly askew leaving the gates and soon recovered to stalk the tempo in a prominent second. Asked to stretch soon after passing halfway, the 2-5 pick quickened stylishly to seize control approaching the final furlong and powered clear in impressive fashion to easily outclass Guildenstern (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) by 4 3/4 lengths.

Frankel, a 'TDN Rising Star' himself, now has 37 on a roster which also features multiple Group 1 winner Nashwa (GB), Sunday's G1 Prix Jacques Le Marois contender Onesto (Ire) and leading juvenile filly and stablemate Ylang Ylang (GB).

“We had him ready to run about a month ago, but he'd a little setback so we had to stop and start again,” O'Brien explained. “We wanted to get him out and he was ready to come racing today. Ryan [Moore] said he was very babyish, but he obviously has a massive engine. He doesn't even know what he's at yet, he only came on the bridle with 50 yards to go and only realised he was racing then. We felt he could go anywhere, but looking at today you'd like to give him another run somewhere before he goes for a big one. He was absolutely half-speeding with horses [at home], but didn't take hold of the bridle today. That can happen first time as it did with Paddington first time in Ascot last year. He's probably going to come on and learn a lot from it.”

Diego Velazquez, immediately identifiable due to his four white socks, has the option of Leopardstown's G2 Golden Fleece S. on Irish Champions Weekend next month, according to the trainer.

Diego Velazquez, the latest of 11 foals, becomes the seventh for Listed National S. victrix Sweepstake (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), whose own dam Dust Flicker (GB) (Suave Dancer) is a full-sister to G3 Prix de la Nonette victrix Dust Dancer (GB). Dust Dancer, in turn, is the second dam of G1 Phoenix S.-winning sire Zoffany (Ire) (Dansili {GB}) and G3 Bengough S. winner Projection (GB) (Acclamation {GB}). Dust Flicker is also kin to G3 Fred Darling S. heroine Bulaxie (GB) (Bustino {GB}), herself the dam of G2 Premio Lydia Tesio victrix Claxon (GB) (Caerleon). Claxon is responsible for GIII Hillsborough S. victrix Cassydora (GB) (Darshaan {GB}), whose three stakes scorers include multiple Group 3 winner Ernest Hemingway (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and G3 Prix d'Aumale victrix Toulifaut (Ire) (Frankel {GB}). The winner's siblings include G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud victor Broome (Ire) (Australia {GB}) and MGSW G1 Vincent O'Brien National S. and G1 Coronation Cup placegetter Point Lonsdale (Ire) (Australia {GB}).

Kuroshio’s Kairyu Notches Anglesey Triumph

Michael O'Callaghan trainee Kairyu (Ire) (Kuroshio {Aus}–Vegatina {GB}, by Lope De Vega {Ire}) was the clear-cut winner of a five-furlong Naas maiden last month and franked the promise of that debut score with an upset win upped in trip for Saturday's G3 Jebel Ali Racecourse And Stables Anglesey S. at the Curragh.

Kairyu employed patient tactics from flagfall and lobbed along off the pace in sixth through the early fractions. Making smooth headway once past halfway, the 4-1 chance quickened beyond rivals to seize control approaching the final furlong and was driven out in the closing stages to hold the late threat of 10-11 favourite Pearls And Rubies (No Nay Never) by 1 1/4 lengths.

“She looks very smart, Colin [Keane] said she doesn't want that [soft] ground and she was just good and tough,” said trainer Michael O'Callaghan. “The gaps appeared a little bit before Colin wanted them, but she has a savage turn of foot where she can go and put a race to bed. She relaxes so well that she'll probably get seven furlongs in time. I was thinking about going to the [G2] Duchess Of Cambridge at Newmarket last week, but I wasn't happy with her work so we waited another week. Colin thinks she'll be better on better ground and she'll probably go for something like the [G2] Lowther [at York] now. She's still a little bit high behind and she's going to grow plenty, so she could potentially be a very nice filly.”

Pedigree Notes
Kairyu becomes the fourth pattern-race winner for her sire (by Exceed And Excel {Aus}) and is the only reported foal produced by Vegatina (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), herself a granddaughter of Listed Prix Isola Bella third Vassiana (Fr) (Anabaa). Vassiana is the dam of G3 Phoenix Sprint S. victrix Girouette (Ire) (Pivital {GB}), herself the second dam of G1 Prix Morny and G1 Middle Park S.-winning sire Blackbeard (Ire) (No Nay Never). Vassiana, who is also a full-sister to G3 Prix d'Arenberg winner Villadolide (Fr) and Listed Prix Hampton scorer Victorieux (Fr), is from the immediate family of G1 Prix de Diane heroine Mrs. Penny (Great Nephew {GB}).
