Contenders Record Final Kentucky Oaks Works

Several GI Kentucky Oaks-bound fillies put in their final major workouts Saturday morning leading up to Friday's Churchill Downs Classic. Leading the Churchill Downs worktab, Phoenix Thoroughbred's Crazy Beautiful (Liam's Map), winner of the Mar. 27 GII Gulfstream Park Oaks in her most recent start, worked a half-mile in :49.20 under Danny Ramsey for trainer Kenny McPeek.

“She had a breeze last week in :59, which was a bullet work,” McPeek said. “So today I just went a half with her, something simple, again just a basic maintenance work. She's eating good, and like King Fury, she's doing super good, fingers crossed.”

Also at Churchill Saturday, Juddmonte Farms' Millefeuille (Curlin) worked five furlongs in :59.60 in company to produce the fastest of 29 works at the distance. Ailsa Morrison was aboard the Gulfstream Park Oaks runner-up for trainer Bill Mott.

“It looked good to me,” trainer Bill Mott said of the work that began after Millefeuille had galloped once around.

At Belmont Park, Beach Haven Thoroughbreds' Maracuja (Honor Code) worked a half-mile in :48.20 for trainer Rob Atras. After breaking her maiden at Aqueduct Feb. 21, she finished runner-up in the nine-furlong GIII Gazelle S. The grey is scheduled to arrive at Churchill Downs Monday.

“I was very happy with it,” Atras said. “I wasn't worried about the time but the track must have been playing fast because the work didn't look that quick to me. She did it easily down the lane and had a nice even gallop out.”

Pricey Curlin Colt Finishes Fast at Belmont

1st-Belmont, $90,000, Msw, 4-24, 3yo/up, 7f, 1:23.56, ft, 3/4 length.
FIRST CAPTAIN (c, 3, Curlin–America {GSW & MGISP, $580,532}, by A.P. Indy) re-rallied late to kick his career off with a promising victory in the Belmont opener Saturday. The $1.5-million Fasig-Tipton Saratoga '19 co-topper and first foal out of GSW and MGISP America was let go at 3-1 off a 9-5 morning line here for the typically patient Shug McGaughey. He broke cleanly enough, and moved up to track from the pocket behind favored fellow firster Mahaamel (Into Mischief)–a $700,000 KEESEP yearling for Shadwell and Todd Pletcher out of the GSW Hot Stones (Bustin Stones). First Captain was shuffled back a bit approaching the turn as another foe went for an early run and challenged for the lead. He seemed to have horse as he waited for a seam, and tipped out into the clear at the head of the lane as Mahaamel fought back to take command once again. Mahaamel looked liked a winner in midstretch as First Captain appeared to be idling a bit, but the latter soon found another gear and finished with a flourish to get up by 3/4 of a length.

Breeder and co-owner Bobby Flay's entry point into First Captain's prolific family was via the colt's stakes-placed second dam Lacadena (Fasliyev), who he purchased privately after she RNA'd for $1.4 million at the 2007 Fasig-Tipton November sale. Lacadena's dam is a half-sister to none other than Broodmare of the Year Better Than Honour (Deputy Minister), the second dam of another McGaughey-trained stand-out sophomore in GII Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth S. and GIII Holy Bull S. hero Greatest Honour (Tapit). America went on to take the 2015 GIII Turnback the Alarm H. after hitting the board in both the GI Mother Goose S. and GI Delaware H. The $725,000 KEESEP '12 RNA was bought back for $3.1 million at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton November sale carrying an Uncle Mo colt. She had produced a full sister to First Captain earlier that year and foaled another Curlin filly this Feb. 28.

The family got even stronger last year when Paris Lights (Curlin), out of America's half-sister Paris Bikini (Bernardini), took the GI Coaching Club American Oaks. Paris Lights annexed the GIII Distaff H. in her first start of the year at Aqueduct Apr. 2. Flay sold Lacadena for $1.3 million in foal to Bernardini at the 2015 Keeneland November sale, and Paris Bikini to WinStar for $425,000 at KEEJAN '16. Trainer Shug McGaughey unveils West Point, Siena Farm, Bobby Flay and Woodford Racing's FIRST CAPTAIN (Curlin), a $1.5 million purchase at the Fasig-Tipton's Saratoga Select sale last summer. The colt is the first foal out of GSW & GISP America (A.P. Indy), a homebred for the Iron Chef. The 3-year-old sports a bullet four-furlong work in :48 1/5 at Payson Apr. 10, and most recently, registered a :48 4/5 (28/63) for the same distance at Belmont Apr. 17. Also suiting up for the first time is Shadwell's MAHAAMEL (Into Mischief). A $700,000 KEESEP buy, the Todd Pletcher trainee is out of Grade III winner Hot Stones (Bustin Stones), a half to Hot Mist (Tonalist), who won on debut last season. TJCIS PPs

Hronis Racing, Siena Farm, Summer Wind Equine and West Point's FLIGHTLINE (Tapit) takes off for John Sadler Saturday. Bred by Summer Wind, the colt realized a $1-million final bid at last summer's Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale. Out of Grade III winner Feathered (Indian Charlie), who also hit the board in the GI Frizette S., GI Starlet S. and GI American Oaks, the bay posted a sharp five-furlong work Apr. 18, stopping the watch in 1:00 2/5. Feathered, a $300,000 OBSMAR buy, was purchased by Summer Wind–in foal to War Front–for $2.35 million at KEENOV in 2016. MONEY MIKE (Into Mischief), a KEESEP graduate, makes his first start for the partnership of SF Racing, Starlight Racing, Madaket Racing and Stonestreet Stables. The $600,000 yearling purchase is the first foal out of MGSW Ahh Chocolate (Candy Ride {Arg}) and comes into this off several speedy works, including the latest a five-furlong move in 1:00 1/5 at Santa Anita Apr. 17. Japan’s France Go De Ina Heading Stateside For Preakness

For the first time since 2016, the Preakness Stakes will have a contender from Japan in the starting gate, according to Kate Hunter on Twitter. The 3-year-old France Go de Ina, trained by Hideyuki Mori, is planning a trip to the United States to contest the middle leg of the Triple Crown.

The Kentucky-bred son of Will Take Charge out of the Curlin mare Dreamy Blues was a $100,000 yearling purchase at the Keeneland September sale. He broke his maiden at second asking in Japan, and won a weight-for-age contest before traveling to Dubai for the UAE Derby.

France Go de Ina finished sixth that day after breaking poorly. The colt will enter quarantine on April 27, and fly to the U.S. on May 5.
