PALIO FLAG (f, 3, Curlin–Private Ensign {GSP, $124,384}, by A.P. Indy) showed she had plenty of class in her unveiling Thursday with a good-looking victory. Breaking sharply from stall 10, the 4-1 shot stalked from a two-wide third through a :22.28 opening quarter and :45.27 half-mile. Drawing alongside the top two entering the turn, the chestnut rolled clear in the lane, holding off a belated bid from 3-2 chalk Movie Moxy (Street Sense) to win by a neck. It was 4 1/4 lengths back to the third-place horse. Grade II-placed Private Ensign is a half-sister to GSW & GISP Ocho Ocho Ocho (Street Sense). She produced a full-sister to the winner in 2018 named Salute the Flag; a yearling filly by Uncle Mo; and a Justify colt born Jan. 14 of this year. This is also the family of undefeated champion and Hall of Famer Personal Ensign (Private Account); champion Storm Flag Flying (Storm Cat); MGISW My Flag (Easy Goer); and GISWs Miner’s Mark, Traditionally (Mr. Prospector) and Mr Speaker (Pulpit). $3.65-Million Cezanne Passes Two-Turn Test With Los Alamitos Victory

Heavily-favored Cezanne didn't disappoint in his debut around two turns for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, capturing the $45,000 feature Thursday at Los Alamitos in Cypress, Calif.

A $3.65 million purchase at the Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream 2-year-olds in training sale in March 2019, the 3-year-old son of Curlin and the Bernardini mare Achieving is now 2-for-2 after dispatching of Mongolian Legend and three others 26 days after breaking his maiden going 6 ½ furlongs.

After breaking from the outside under jockey Flavien Prat, Cezanne, who is owned by Michael Tabor, Michael B. Smith, Mrs. John Magnier and co-breeder St. Elias Stable, Cezanne sat off the pace set by stablemate Bronn, then took charge with a quick burst at the top of the long stretch and went on to win by 1 3/4 lengths as the 1-10 choice.

“I think he made the lead a little early and was kind of lost (late in the stretch) but I thought it was good,'' said Baffert. “We wanted to get a nice two turn race into him. He needed it and he ran pretty fast.

“I'm glad we found this spot. He's got a ways to go, but he's improving. We'll have to see how  he comes out of this, but we'll try to find a little stakes race for him, probably out of town.

“He's a heavy horse and he needed that,” Baffert added. “After his first race he was blowing pretty hard, but today he wasn't as tired. He's getting fit. I was very happy with his race. The party continues.”

Cezanne was the sixth individual betting choice at 19-1 in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 5 that closed on June 28. Grade 1 Belmont Stakes winner Tiz the Law was the favorite at 2-1.

Cezanne, who has banked $57,000 for his wins, returned $2.20 and $2.10. There was no show wagering.

Mongolian Legend, the longest shot in the cast of five at 33-1, paid $6.80. Bronn, who was making his first start since graduating at Los Alamitos last Sept. 8, Itsthattime and Never Easy completed the order of finish.

Racing resumes Friday at Los Alamitos. Post time is 1 p.m.

‘A Great Mind’: $3.65 Million Purchase Cezanne Will Try Two-Turn Allowance Before Derby Prep

A $3.65 million 2-year-old at last spring's Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream sale, Cezanne lived up to early expectations when breaking his maiden on debut earlier this month at Santa Anita Park. For his second start, the 3-year-old son of Curlin will step up to two turns in a one-mile allowance race at Los Alamitos this Thursday.

Trained by Bob Baffert for owners Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith, and St. Elias Stable, Cezanne is out of the Bernardini mare Achieving. His third dam is the Deputy Minister mare Better Than Honour, the dam of Belmont Stakes winners Jazil and Rags to Riches.

In his debut, the colt sat just off the pace before making his bid between rivals on the turn, then pulling away down the lane to win by 2 1/4 lengths, completing 6 1/2 furlongs on the fast main track in 1:16.13. Since that start, Cezanne has breezed twice at Santa Anita, going five furlongs in 1:01.80 on June 22 and a half-mile in :48 flat on June 28.

“He's still a little heavy,” Baffert told the Daily Racing Form. “More racing will help him. He's shown us he's a top horse. He's got a great mind and doesn't get excited. He's been behaving himself.”

Should his two-turn debut prove successful, Cezanne could be considered for a Kentucky Derby prep race, said Baffert.
