Gains at the CTBA Winter Sale

The one-day California Thoroughbred Breeders Association (CTBA) Winter Mixed Sale, held Tuesday, Feb. 1, at Fairplex, closed with significant gains over the 2021 edition. A total of 113 horses were sold for gross sales of $1,298,407, with an average of $11,490 and a median of $5,200. At last year's Winter Mixed Sale, 73 horses were sold for a total of $575,100, an average of $7,878, and a median of $3,200.

Le Vron James (Vronsky–Arousing, by Cee's Tizzy) sold for a session-topping $85,000. Bred by Harris Farms and Donald Valpredo, the 2-year-old colt was bought by Dare to Dream, Don Calabria, and John Crawford. The highest-priced filly at the session was also a 2-year-old, an unnamed Gun Runner filly out of Mahogany Lane (A.P. Indy), who was purchased by Ron Thomsen for $42,000.

Le Vron James Scores At CTBA Winter Mixed Sale

Le Vron James, a 2-year-old son of the late Vronsky, sold for a session-topping $85,000 to lead sizeable year-over-year gains at Tuesday's California Thoroughbred Breeders Association Winter Mixed Sale at Fairplex.

There were 113 horses sold for gross sales of $1,298,407, an average of $11,490 and a median of $5,200. At last year's Winter Mixed Sale, 73 sold for gross sales of $575,100, an average of $7,878 and a median of $3,200.

The California-bred Vronsky colt, out of the Cee's Tizzy mare Arousing, was bred by Harris Farms and Donald Valpredo and purchased by Dare to Dream, Don Calabria, and John Crawford. He previously sold to Jeff Ganje at the 2021 CTBA Northern California Yearling Sale for $32,000.

A close second to the topper was Prince Jimmy, a California-bred son of Jimmy Creed out of the Tiznow mare Following a Dream, which sold to Super Horse, agent Sweetwater Trading, for $75,000. He was bred by Tony Busching and Carol Busching.

The highest-priced filly purchase was a 2-year-old Kentucky-bred filly by Gun Runner, out of the A.P. Indy mare Mahogany Lane, purchased by Ron Thomsen for $42,000.

CTBA To Participate In NTRA Checkoff Program

The California Thoroughbred Breeders Association (CTBA), which hosts a pair of Thoroughbred sales annually, will participate in the NTRA Legislative Action Campaign's 1/4% Checkoff Program, which supports the NTRA's federal lobbying efforts.

Beginning with the Aug. 10 Northern California Sale at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton, buyers and consignors/sellers at may elect to have 0.25% of the sale price of each horse donated to the Legislative Action Campaign. This percentage equals $2.50 for every $1,000 in sale price. The CTBA joins Keeneland, Fasig-Tipton, Ocala Breeders' Sales Company and the Washington Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association as Thoroughbred sales companies that participate in the Campaign's fundraising efforts.

“The CTBA recognizes the importance of having the NTRA's skilled and consistent presence in Washington, D.C., on federal legislative matters,” said CTBA President Doug Burge. “We are glad to be able to help support the NTRA by offering our buyers and sellers the opportunity to contribute to the voluntary 1/4% Check-off Program.”

“We are pleased and grateful to have the CTBA participate in our Legislative Action Campaign's 1/4¼% Check-off Program,” said NTRA President and Chief Executive Officer Alex Waldrop. “CTBA membership, president Doug Burge and his team and the CTBA board of directors are long-time supporters of the NTRA's programs and this enhances the relationship with our Western region constituents.”

CTBA Sales To Participate In NTRA Legislative Action Campaign’s ¼% Check-Off Program

The National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) announced Monday that the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association (CTBA), a non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of Thoroughbred breeding and racing in California and host of two annual Thoroughbred sales, will participate in the NTRA Legislative Action Campaign's ¼% Check-off Program, which supports the NTRA's federal lobbying efforts. The CTBA's participation will commence with its August 10 Northern California Sale at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton, Calif. and continue at its January Mixed Sale.
