Saturday's Cross Country Pick 5, showcasing live action from Belmont and Oaklawn Park, returned $9,200.25 for selecting all five winner's for the 50-cent wager. The total was pool was $129,903.

Shaftesbury started the sequence with a strong 2 3/4-length win in a 1 1/16-mile maiden race on Belmont's Widener turf course in Race 6. The Todd Pletcher trainee, off as the 5-2 favorite, had finished second in three consecutive starts before breaking through, hitting the wire in 1:41.63 under jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. Shaftesbury, a $675,000 purchase at the 2019 Keeneland September Sale, paid $7.60 on a $2 win wager.

Oaklawn got in on the fun with a six-furlong main track allowance tilt for 4-year-olds and up in Race 5, as Greely and Ben edged Sevier by a neck to earn victory for trainer Karl Broberg. Ridden by David Cohen, Greeley and Ben, who went off at 3-1 and returned $8.40, completed the course in 1:10.48.

Back at Belmont, Looking At Bikinis made his 5-year-old debut a successful one for trainer Chad Brown, rewarding his even-money favoritism to post a one-length score in a seven-furlong allowance optional claimer in Race 7. Hall of Fame jockey Javier Castellano kept Looking At Bikinis, who competed in the 2019 Grade 1 Runhappy Travers and that year's Grade 1 Cigar Mile, forwardly placed in stalking position behind pacesetter American Power before a strong finish and a final time of 1:23.45. He paid $4.20.

At Oaklawn, Firehorn provided the sequence's biggest upset, winning a six-furlong main track sprint at 16-1 odds in Race 6. Firehorn, who returned $34, pulled away in the stretch under rider Fernando De La Cruz to win by a half-length over Sharp Art for trainer Randy Morse. The sprint for 3-year-olds and up saw Firehorn post a final time of 1:11.17.

Belmont ended the wager with the sequence's lone stakes, as Casa Creed won a blanket finish, a head in front of favorite Front Run the Fed in the $100,000 Elusive Quality in Race 8. The seven-furlong sprint was the first turf stakes of Belmont Park's 48-day spring/summer meet, and Joe Bravo piloted Casa Creed to a final time of 1:22.65. Trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, Casa Creed paid $7.60.

Cross Country Pick 5 Features Opening Weekend At Belmont Park, Action From Oaklawn

The New York Racing Association Inc. [NYRA] will host a Cross Country Pick 5 on Saturday featuring racing from the first weekend of the Belmont Park spring/summer meet, along with action from Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

A full field of 12 maidens 3-years-old and up competing at 1 1/16 miles on the Widener turf course will start the sequence in Belmont's Race 6 at 3:34 p.m. Eastern. Mandatory has finished in the money in four of his five career starts, posting a 0-2-2 record, including earning a field-best 85 Beyer Speed Figure for a runner-up last out on March 14 at Aqueduct Racetrack for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott. The Todd Pletcher-trained Shaftesbury, a $675,000 purchase at the 2019 Keeneland September Sale, has finished second in three consecutive starts, all at Gulfstream Park, and is 7-2 on the morning line.

Oaklawn will get in on the fun with a six-furlong starter allowance race for 3-year-olds and up going six furlongs in Race 5 at 3:54 p.m. Sevier, 3-1 for trainer Coty Rosin, won his last two races at Oaklawn and will look for a third consecutive win. Greeley and Ben, trained by Karl Broberg, and I Belong to Becky both are listed at 7-2.

The sequence alternates back to Belmont with a seven-furlong allowance optional claimer contest for 4-year-olds and up in Race 7 at 4:08 p.m. The Chad Brown trained Looking At Bikinis will be making his first start of 2021, returning off a five-month break. Looking At Bikinis, who ran 11th in the 2019 Grade 1 Travers and fourth in that year's Grade 1 Cigar Mile, will be racing for just the third time since 2020 but is 2-1 on the morning line. The New York-bred T Loves a Fight will be making his 50th career start, listed at 15-1 for trainer Orlando Noda.

A full field of a dozen 3-year-olds and up will contest Oaklawn's sixth race, a six-furlong claiming contest, at 4:29 p.m. Balandeen, at 3-1 on the morning line, has finished in third in his last three races for trainer Juan Cano. Unscathed, listed at 9-2 for conditioner Genaro Garcia, also ran third last out in a claiming contest, finishing in the money in April at Oaklawn going the same distance as Saturday's race.

Belmont will wrap up the Cross County Pick 5 with the sequence's only stakes, as eight 4-year-olds and up will square off in the $100,000 Elusive Quality going seven furlongs on the Widener turf course. Eight-time stakes winner Therapist will look to win his seasonal debut for the third consecutive year and is listed at 7-2 for trainer Christophe Clement. Brown will send out three contenders in the eight-horse field, including 2-1 favorite Front Run the Fed, along with 4-1 Value Proposition and 12-1 selection Seismic Wave.

With Just One Winning Favorite, Cross Country Pick 5 Pays $1,622

Saturday's Cross Country Pick 5, featuring stakes action from Aqueduct, Oaklawn Park and Keeneland, returned $1,622 for selecting all five winner's for the 50-cent wager. The total was pool was $133,595.

An allowance race from Keeneland started the sequence in Race 7, as Brooke Marie won a 5 1/2-furlong turf sprint by 1 1/2 lengths for trainer Jonathan Thomas. Brooke Marie, piloted by Luis Saez, returned $9 on a $2 win wager, posting a final time of 1:02.75.

Oaklawn got in on the action in the second leg when Impressed won a six-furlong main track sprint in Race 7, registering a 1 1/4-length score for trainer Ingrid Mason. The allowance optional claiming tilt saw jockey Martin Garcia keep Impressed off the pace, rallying from eighth to complete the course in 1:10.51. Impressed paid $17.

Action shifted back to Lexington, Kentucky for the third leg and the first stakes, as Say the Word bested Channel Cat by 1 1/2 lengths to win the Grade 2, $200,000 Elkhorn for 4-year-olds and up going 1 1/2 miles on the turf in Keeneland's Race 9. The Philip D'Amato trainee returned $7.20, finishing in 2:28.26 under jockey Luis Saez.

Graded stakes action continued in Hot Springs, Arkansas when Silver State extended a run of non-favorites winning by topping Fearless by a half-length to win the Grade 2, $1 million Oaklawn Handicap for 4-year-olds and up going 1 1/8 miles on the main track in Race 9. Trained by Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, Silver State paid $11.40, with jockey Ricardo Santana, Jr. guiding Silver State to the winner's circle after posting a final time of 1:49.56.

The lone victorious favorite in the Cross Country Pick 5 was in the ninth race finale at Aqueduct, when Sassy Melissa edged Tales I Winit by a neck in six-furlong maiden claimer on the outer turf. Off at 2-1, Sassy Melissa paid $6.30, with Jose Ortiz notching his meet-leading 21st victory. Winning trainer David Donk's charge stopped the clock in 1:12.35.

Saturday’s Cross Country Pick 5 Features Action From Aqueduct, Keeneland, Oaklawn

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) will host a Cross Country Pick 5 on Saturday, April 17 in partnership with Keeneland Race Course and Oaklawn Park.

Commencing the sequence is Race 7 at Keeneland [4:24 p.m.] where a field of ten fillies and mares go 5 ½ furlongs over the turf. Trainer Wesley Ward sends out Hat Creek Racing's Chili Petin, who makes her first start since June 21 when fifth in the Lady Shipman at Belmont Park. Lothenbach Stables' Ready for Change will see turf for the first time after two triumphs in off-the-turf events at Fair Grounds for trainer Neil Pessin.

Action shifts to Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas for the second leg of the sequence, where ten 3-year-olds and upward travel six furlongs for an allowance optional claiming tilt. Brereton Jones' Kadri has placed in his last three starts over the Arkansas oval and seeks his first triumph since last September at Churchill Downs, where he defeated eventual Grade 1-winner Idol. The race has a scheduled post time of 4:29 p.m. and will run as Oaklawn's seventh race.

The middle leg will see graded stakes action for the Grade 3, $200,000 Elkhorn going twelve furlongs over the turf. Always strongly represented with talented turf stock, trainer Mike Maker sends out three contenders, two of which are for Three Diamonds Farm. Breaking from the rail, Cross Border seeks his first triumph since the Grade 2 Bowling Green in July at Saratoga, while fellow Three Diamonds Farm color-bearer Tide of the Sea vies for his second graded stakes victory after capturing the Grade 2 W.L. McKnight on January 23 at Gulfstream Park. Maker also will saddle six-time winner Monarchs Glen. Hall of Famer Shug McGaughey will saddle North Dakota, a graded stakes-winning half-brother to prolific stallion War Front. The 5-year-old son of Medaglia d'Oro notched graded stakes glory two starts back in the Grade 3 Red Smith at the Big A. Carded as Race 9, the Elkhorn will go off at 5:30 p.m.

Ten minutes later, Aqueduct hosts the penultimate leg of the sequence [Race 9, 5:40 p.m.], where a dozen New York-bred fillies and mares, plus four also-eligible entrants, assemble seeking a first career win for a $40,000 tag over the outer turf course. Three Diamonds Farm's Esotica, bred by Southern Equine Stables, receives a drop in class after finishing fourth to stakes-placed Summer Brew on March 20 over the Big A main track.

The curtains close on the sequence with the Grade 2, $1 million Oaklawn Handicap, where red-hot Silver State seeks five consecutive wins for Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen. Owned by Winchell Thoroughbreds and Willis Horton Racing, Silver State was a two-time allowance winner going seven furlongs in the fall before capturing the Fifth Season and Essex at Oaklawn Park in his most recent pair of starts. Trainer John Shirreffs will ship C R K Racing's Express Train from Southern California after finishing second in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap on March 6. The bay son of Union Rags was second in the Grade 1 Malibu to Charlatan before scoring at graded stakes level in the Grade 2 San Pasqual on January 30 where he registered a career-best 103 Beyer Speed Figure. Carded as Race 9, the Oaklawn Handicap is scheduled to go off at 5:49 p.m.
