Cross Country Pick 5 Pays Big On Saturday

Saturday's Cross Country Pick 5 featuring racing from Belmont Park in Elmont, Ny. and Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., paid $37,936 for selecting all five winners for the 50-cent wager. The total pool was $89,270.

Churchill commenced the action when Exult rallied from eighth to win a starter allowance for 3-year-olds and up going one mile on the turf in Race 6. Exult, trained by Rodolphe Brisset and ridden by Tyler Gaffalione, was fifth in the stretch before turning it on to post a 1 3/4-length victory with a final time of 1:35.33, returning $8.80 on a $2 win wager.

Belmont was the site of the sequence's first stakes, as Sport Model won the $150,000 New York Stallion Stakes Series Cupecoy's Joy for eligible state-sired 3-year-old fillies going seven furlongs on the Widener turf course in Race 6. The Christophe Clement-trained Sport Model, under jockey Luis Saez, outkicked Funwhileitlasted by a half-length, completing the course in 1:21.16. Sport Model paid $14.80.

The action stayed at Belmont for Race 8, as My First Grammy edged Top Gun Tommy by a neck to win a starter allowance going a one-turn mile on Big Sandy in Race 8. My First Grammy, conditioned by Oscar Barrera, was piloted by Manny Franco, hitting the wire in 1:36.78. Off at 9-1, My First Grammy returned $20.20.

Witez bested Take Charge Ro by three-quarters of a length in Churchill's Race 9, winning at 13-1 in paying $29.60 for the sequence's biggest upset. The Ian Wilkes trainee completed the 1 1/8-mile turf course in 1:48.43 under Chris Landeros, topping a 10-horse field of fillies and mares 3-years-old and up in an allowance optional claimer.

The $150,000 NYSSS Spectacular Bid in Belmont's Race 9 concluded the Cross Country Pick 5, with Ocala Dream repelling the favorite Step Dancer's late charge to win the seven-furlong Widener turf contest for 3-year-olds by one length. Trained by Tom Morley, Ocala Dream, ridden by Junior Alvarado, notched a final time of 1:21.20 and paid $8.40.

Belmont, Churchill Downs Comprise Saturday’s Cross Country Pick 5

The New York Racing Association Inc. [NYRA] will host a Cross Country Pick 5 on Saturday featuring racing action from Belmont Park and Churchill Downs.

Churchill, located in Louisville, Kentucky, will commence the sequence with a starter allowance contest for 3-year-olds and up going one mile on the turf in Race 6 at 3:18 p.m. Eastern. Chantry Flats, who has compiled two wins and a runner-up finish in five starts this year for trainer Paul McGee, will be looking for his second victory in three starts at Churchill. Handy, who won at Churchill on May 15 for conditioner Robertino Diodoro, will also comprise a full field of 12.

Belmont will kick off the stakes portion of the wager with a field of 11 New York-sired 3-year-old sophomore fillies will contest in the $150,000 New York Stallion Stakes Series Cupecoy's Joy at seven furlongs on the Widener turf course in Race 6 at 3:34 p.m.

Ava's Grace, also trained by Diodoro, arrives at her first grass engagement off a runner-up finish in the 1 1/16-mile Grade 3 Fantasy on April 3 at Oaklawn Park. The Laoban filly secured a front-running position and battled gamely down the stretch to the inside of Pauline's Pearl before hitting the wire one length back. Trainer Christophe Clement will move two fillies up from the claiming ranks when saddling Sport Model and Proper Grammar.

A 10-horse field for 3-year-olds and up going a one-turn mile on Belmont's Big Sandy will comprise the third leg in Belmont's Race 8 at 4:40 p.m. The starter allowance contest will see 2-1 morning-line favorite Risk Profile look to win his second in a row at Belmont for trainer George Weaver after capturing a maiden special weight on May 7.

Action alternates back to Churchill for a 1 1/8-mile turf allowance optional claiming tilt for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up in Race 9 at 4:55 p.m. Graded stakes-veteran Guitty, who ran second in the Grade 2 San Clemente last July and has competed in a pair of Grade 1s, will be making her second start for trainer Mike Maker. The veteran conditioner will also saddle Three Diamonds Farm's Enjoyitwhilewecan, who enters from a narrow neck defeat last out when third in a nine-furlong optional-claiming tilt on the Churchill turf on May 21. Also in the field is the Ian Wilkes-trained Witez, who ran third in the Grade 3 Lake George in August at Saratoga Race Course and is looking for her first win since besting an allowance field in July at the Spa.

Closing out the Cross Country Pick 5 will be the $150,000 NYSSS Spectacular Bid in Belmont's Race 9 at 5:12 p.m. A full field of 13 sophomores going seven furlongs on the Widener course.

Dreamer's Disease, who will be saddled by Diodoro will return to the turf after five consecutive main track appearances, including a sixth-place finish in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile in November at Keeneland. Step Dancer, the 3-1 morning-line favorite, won his debut in September at Saratoga and followed with a third-place finish in his first race at Belmont in the Grade 2 Pilgrim in October. The Barclay Tagg trainee capped his juvenile year with a three-quarter length victory in the 1 1/16-mile Awad in October at Belmont.

Cross Country Pick 5 Posts Nice Payout

The Cross Country Pick 5 on Saturday, featuring racing from Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y., Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J., and Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario, tallied a total pool of $87,895.50, paying out $1,437 for selecting all five winners for the 50-cent wager.

Whispering Pines started the wager by overtaking Midtown Rose in the stretch and pulling away for a 3 1/4-length victory under jockey Jose Ortiz to win the seven-furlong allowance sprint for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up in Race 7 at Belmont. Trained by Horacio DePaz, Whispering Pines, off at 9-2, returned $11.80 on a $2 win wager.

Woodbine got into the action when Linda Loves Lace, an 11-1 selection, went gate-to-wire for a 1 1/4-length win over Elite Princess in a 5 1/2-furlong sprint over the all-weather track in Race 7. Trained by John Staples and ridden by Steven Bahen, Linda Loves Lace paid $25.90.

The sequence's biggest surprise came in the lone stakes race, when 79-1 Informative bested favorite and last year's Grade 1 Haskell runner-up Ny Traffic by one length to win the Grade 3 Salvator Mile in Monmouth Park's Race 10. Informative, piloted by Jose Ferrer for trainer Uriah St. Lewis, was a $161.60 winner for topping the 10-horse field of 3-year-olds and up.

Conversely, the fourth leg saw the only favorite to win in the sequence, when Speightstown Shirl defeated Confident by three-quarters of a length to win the one-mile turf maiden event for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up in Woodbine's Race 8. Conditioned by Roger Attfield and ridden by Rafael Hernandez, Speightstown paid $3.70.

Closing the sequence was Fifty Sheas Ofgrey, who returned $25.40 after holding off He'spuregold by a head in the 1 1/16-mile turf maiden special weight for 3-year-olds and up in Monmouth's Race 11. The Carlos David trainee, ridden by Hector Diaz, Jr., topped the 10-horse field.

Action commences in Race 7 [4:06 p.m. Eastern] at Belmont Park, when a field of nine older fillies and mares seek a first-level allowance triumph going seven furlongs over the main track. Breaking from the rail, Juddmonte Farms' Entreat makes her first start since a victorious career debut on September 25 at Churchill Downs for trainer Chad Brown. Jeff Drown and Don Rachel's Iaintfraidanoghost cuts back in distance after a four-length victory on February 28 at Aqueduct. Trained by Jeremiah Englehart, the daughter of Ghostzapper scored at fourth asking in a one-turn mile over a muddy and sealed track.

Action shifts to Woodbine Racetrack for the second leg – a 5 ½-furlong maiden optional claiming event over the all-weather surface. Praven Sorenson and Wayne Oliver's Thatsmykindanight seeks a first career win following two runner up finishes as the 2-1 morning line favorite. Carded as Race 7, the second leg of the sequence has a scheduled post time of 4:20 p.m.

The middle leg brings stakes action to the table when Monmouth Park hosts the Grade 3, $150,000 Salvator Mile [Race 10, 4:28 p.m.]. Defending winner Pirate's Punch invades from Kentucky for trainer Grant Forster, making his first start since finishing 12th in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile in November at Keeneland. John Fanelli, Cash Is King, LC Racing, Paul Braverman and Team Hanley's Ny Traffic returns to Monmouth Park after a narrow defeat in last year's Grade 1 Haskell Invitational. Trained by Saffie Joseph, Jr., Ny Traffic arrives off his best Beyer Speed Figure yet when garnering a 103 when defeating his New York-bred counterparts by 6 ¾ lengths going seven furlongs at Belmont Park.

Woodbine gets back in on the action in an open maiden special weight for 3-year-olds and upward going one mile over the turf for Race 8 [4:51 p.m.]. Hall of Famer Roger Attfield sends out regally-bred Speightstown Shirl – a daughter of prolific sire Speightstown out of 2011 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf winner Perfect Shirl – for her fourth start after finishing second in all three previous efforts. Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Gary Barber's Astrological, a bay daughter of Malibu Moon and half-sister to 2018 Woodbine Oaks winner Dixie Moon, makes her career debut for Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse.

A field of 11 turf maiden special weight aspirants closes the curtains on the sequence in a 1 1/16-mile event, carded as Race 11 with a 4:58 p.m. post. Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher will debut Lumino, a son of Medaglia d'Oro out of Exotic Bloom. Owned by Phoenix Thoroughbreds, the 4-year-old dark bay is a half-sibling to 2015 Breeders' Cup Distaff winner Stopchargingmaria and was bought for $2.1 million from the 2018 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Pletcher also sends out Jackpot Farm's Freer, who makes his second career start after finishing second on April 24 at Gulfstream Park.
