Olympic Glory’s Grand Glory Upsets The Romanet

Deauville's G1 Darley Prix Jean Romanet has a habit of producing shock winners and there was another to add to the list on Sunday as Grand Glory (GB) (Olympic Glory {Ire}) got up late to deny last year's heroine Audarya (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) in a thriller. Last seen enjoying a confidence-boosting success in the July 21 G3 Grand Prix de Vichy, Albert Frassetto, John d'Amato and Mike Pietrangelo's G3 Prix de Flore and Listed Prix Zarkava winner who was third in the 2019 G1 Prix de Diane was anchored in rear early by Cristian Demuro. Making her move wide on the home turn, the 23-1 shot needed all of the straight to get past the reigning GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf title-holder but managed it on the line to prevail by a short head, with the G1 Pretty Polly S. scorer Thundering Nights (Ire) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) 1 1/4 lengths away in third. “This is a dream really–these races personally I used to watch on TV and they were not for me, but here I am winning a group 1 in Deauville, it's such a thrill,” trainer Gianluca Bietolini said. “I knew I had the filly in great form and she was doing very well after Vichy with a much less complicated season this year than last. We made the right choices for her and she has come through this season more straightforwardly, so I felt it was a really good time to try her again in a group 1 race.”

Much water has flown under the bridge since Grand Glory was beaten a head and half a length when making the frame in the 2019 Diane and despite maintaining an admirable level of consistency, few would have predicted that the bay would make the requisite jump required to get to this esteemed level. Her efforts last season included the aforementioned wins in ParisLongchamp's Prix Zarkava and Saint-Cloud's Prix de Flore, a second to Ambition (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the G2 Prix Corrida staged at Lyon-Parilly and a third behind Ebaiyra (Distorted Humor) in the 12 1/2-furlong G2 Prix de Pomone here. Third to Skalleti (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) on her comeback in the 10-furlong G3 Prix Exbury on heavy ground back at Saint-Cloud Mar. 21, she was uncharacteristically disappointing when last of six in the G3 Prix Allez France at ParisLongchamp May 2 before finishing third in the latter venue's G3 La Coupe again over this trip June 13.

Buoyed by her success at Vichy, Grand Glory showed what a sudden uptick in self-belief can do as she mastered a strong field of fillies and mares including the ultimately disappointing 9-5 favourite Lady Bowthorpe (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) without a hint of fluke. Bietolini is considering the G1 Prix de l'Opera de Longchamp now Oct. 3. “It looks to me that she is back to the level of her Diane run as a 3-year-old, but she's not in the Arc and I wouldn't want to go there anyway,” he said. “The Opera is enough for us and maybe we'll have another great day there. She'll head to the farm after that.” James Fanshawe said of the runner-up, “She's run a great race and was beaten narrowly, but that's the game–you win and you lose so hats off to the winner. I'm very happy that she's come back to her best after Goodwood and we'll take it race-by-race with the plan to come back for the Opera and then go to the Breeders' Cup like last year.”

Grand Glory's dam Madonna Lily (Ire) (Daylami {Ire}), whose final foal is the useful 4-year-old gelding Bois d'Argent (GB) (Toronado {Ire}), is a daughter of the listed-placed Maria de La Luz (GB) (Machiavellian) who produced the GII Canadian S. winner Minakshi (Fr) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}). She is also the second dam of the Scandinavian juvenile champion and Listed Meydan Classic-placed Irish Trilogy (Ire) (Gregorian {Ire}) hailing from the family of the Australian group 1-winning mother and daughter Arapaho Miss (Aus) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) and Miami Bound (NZ) (Reliable Man {GB}) and the Preakness S. hero and champion sire Tom Rolfe (Ribot {GB}).

Ectot’s Good Too A New Rising Star at Deauville

Following on from a flurry of Rising Star awards in Ireland and Stateside overnight, Al Shaqab Racing's 2-year-old colt Good Too (Fr) (Ectot {GB}) joined the esteemed ranks with an impressive performance in Sunday's Prix de Montaigu at Deauville. Steadied off the pace in fifth after a sharp getaway in this one-mile newcomers' test, the 17-10 favourite made eyecatching headway on the bridle in the straight to challenge out wide with 300 metres remaining and displayed an impressive turn of foot once taking control at the furlong marker to easily outclass Yoozuna (Ire) (Kizuna {Jpn}) by 2 1/2 lengths in taking fashion, becoming the second winner for his freshman sire (by Hurricane Run {Ire}).

“We've been thinking, for quite some time, that this is a very nice horse,” said trainer Jean-Claude Rouget. “He had been working extremely well and he won that very nicely indeed. I feel he has great potential and, as I usually do, he will be lightly raced this year. He may have one or two more starts this year to give him some additional experience.”

Good Too, a half-brother to Listed Prix des Jouvenceaux et des Jouvencelles runner-up Nunzia (Fr) (Epaulette {Aus}), is the second of two foals produced by Netsuke (Ire) (Aragorn {Ire}), herself a dual-winning full-sister to G2 Duque de Caxias victrix and G1 Organizacao Sulamericana de Fomento ao Puro Sangue de Corrida runner-up Notting Tomorrow. Notting Tomorrow, in turn, is the dam of G1 Matias Machline hero Jackson Pollock (Brz) (Kodiak Cowboy). The April-foaled bay's second dam is MGSW GI John C. Zoffany Filly Earns TDN Rising Star Tag at Deauville

Carrying Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani's second strip for Tuesday's Prix Le Cyrano at Deauville, 2-year-old filly Osmose (Fr) (Zoffany {Ire}) was very much the lead violin coming home and powered to 'TDN Rising Stardom' with a taking performance in the 6 1/2-furlong debutantes' heat. The well-backed 2-1 favourite was sharply into stride and stalked the pace in third through halfway. Looming large full of run passing the quarter-mile marker, she seized control with 300 metres remaining and powered clear in hand inside the final furlong to easily outpoint Enfant Rouge (Fr) (Bated Breath {GB}) by a geared-down two lengths.

“She broke alertly and was a bit keen in the early strides, but I was able to get some cover and she relaxed beautifully,” said winning rider Cristian Demuro. “She quickened nicely when I took her out with 2 1/2 furlongs to go and, when she found her best stride, she was very impressive. She needs more experience, but will get that with racing and she should stay the one-mile trip easily.”

Osmose is the second of four foals and first winner produced by an unraced half-sister to MGISW dual US champion Unique Bella (Tapit), whose three elite-level victories came in the GI La Brea S., GI Clement L. Hirsch S. and GI Beholder Mile. The March-foaled homebred bay's second dam is GI Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic heroine Unrivaled Belle (Unbridled's Song), herself a daughter of GII Lady's Secret Breeders' Cup H. and GII Princess S. victrix Queenie Belle (Bertrando). Osmose is half to a yearling filly by Showcasing (GB) and a weanling colt by Wootton Bassett (GB).

Shock In The Pouliches As The Wow Signal’s Coeursamba Strikes

Entering Sunday's G1 Emirates Poule d'Essai des Pouliches with plenty of black-type experience but without a win in that sphere, Abdullah bin Fahad Al Attiyah's Coeursamba (Fr) (The Wow Signal {Ire}) was just saving her best for the big time as Cristian Demuro launched her to overhaul Mother Earth (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) in a thriller. Prepping for this ParisLongchamp Classic with a third placing in a course-and-distance conditions event Apr. 22, the bay whose best 2-year-old form had involved third placings in the G3 Prix Six Perfections at Deauville in August and in the G3 Prix d'Aumale here the following month had the perfect trip throughout covered up halfway down the pack against the fence. Angled out as the G1 1000 Guineas winner was thrust to the fore, the 37-1 shot surged by that 17-10 favourite 100 metres from the line and on to a 1 1/4-length success, with the Ballydoyle runner a short neck ahead of an even bigger longshot Kennella (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) in third. The winner, who was providing Jean-Claude Rouget with a fifth renewal, had to survive an inquiry into possible interference but the result was left to stand. “She had raced a lot last year and spent quite a long time on the farm this winter, so I didn't want to rush her back too early,” her trainer explained. “She raced with the instructions to the jockey not to give her a hard race last time and since then had come on a lot. You never know in these Classics, but I thought she was in great form. She got a great trip on the inside and saved ground, then quickened twice like all the good horses do.”

French dominance of this Classic remains very healthy, with this win being a remarkable 18th from the last 19 for the domestic fillies. Coeursamba had been out early last term, finishing third on her introduction over six furlongs at Lyon Parilly in May before beating the subsequent G3 Prix de Cabourg runner-up Jubilation (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) and G3 Prix d'Arenberg scorer Kalahara (GB) (Frankel {GB}) over that trip at Saint-Cloud the following month. Third behind See the Rose (Ire) (Kendargent {Fr}) in the Six Perfections upped to seven and to King's Harlequin (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) trying this trip in the Prix d'Aumale, she was fifth in the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac here the day after being sold for €400,000 at the Arqana Arc Sale. Signing off last term with a fourth to Lullaby Moon (GB) (Belardo {Ire}) reverting to seven for the G3 Prix Miesque at Chantilly, she still looked a fair way off Classic-winning standard when third to the subsequent Listed Prix des Lilas winner Tahlie (Fr) (Rio de la Plata) here last time.

When asked by the interviewer in the immediate aftermath what he believed had made the difference from the Prix du Louvre to this Classic, Cristian Demuro simply replied, “I think Jean-Claude Rouget made the difference!” The trainer in question was intent on sticking to a mile with the winner, with the 10 1/2-furlong G1 Prix de Diane immediately ruled out of the equation. “She will definitely not run in the Diane, as she won't stay,” he said. “She is not entered in the [G1] Coronation Stakes [at Royal Ascot June 18] with all the travel restrictions and Covid-19. I didn't enter any horse. There is the [G1] Prix Rothschild, or she can run in the [G1] Prix Jean Prat against the colts, or we could supplement for the Coronation.”

The 96-1 shot Kennella's trainer Nicolas Caullery was sadding his first runner at group 1 level and said of the third, “We came hoping for a place and I would have been very happy to take third before the off. This was her first time running over 1600 metres, but she is such a valiant, brave and kind filly. She came into the race in great condition; she worked with [the Listed Prix Maurice Caillault winner and G3 Prix de Guiche third] Fort Payne and she is just behind him. In the [G3 Prix] Imprudence, she was a bit unlucky in running but she finished with a magnificent action–in another stride she was third and with a bit more luck, not far from the winner. It's not necessarily a bad thing to have a quiet prep rather than a hard race. I am delighted for her connections, it's a story of great friendship. They have been very loyal and I also have her 2-year-old sister in training. She's a really nice filly.”

Bought for €24,000 as a foal at the Arqana Breeding Stock Sale, Coeursamba was snapped up by Rouget for €40,000 at the v.2 Yearlings Sale before Jean-Louis Tepper let her go at the Arc Sale. Her dam Marechale (Fr) (Anabaa), who has also produced the Listed Prix Zarkava-placed Lady Sidney (Fr) (Mr. Sidney), is a full-sister to the triple listed-winning and G2 Prix du Muguet third Maxwell (Fr) and granddaughter of Mother of Pearl (Fr) (Sir Gaylord) who ran second in the G3 Prix de la Grotte. This is the dam line of the G1 Prix de Diane-winning champion Fine Pearl (Fr) (Fine Top {Fr}). Marechale's as-yet unnamed 2-year-old colt is by Olympic Glory (Ire).
