Son Of Cracksman A New TDN Rising Star

With the prospect of the initial progeny of Cracksman (GB) encountering middle-distances and testing ground in their second seasons, the signs were strong that the Dalham Hall resident would come to the fore and Thursday's early Spring meeting at Saint-Cloud proved early confirmation as the newcomer Silver Crack (Fr) stormed to TDN Rising Star status. Anchored behind the early leaders by Cristian Demuro, the well-supported 9-10 favourite for the 10-furlong Prix Suave Dancer for 3-year-old colts and geldings moved to the front well in hand with 300 metres remaining before beginning his victory lap. Clear when eased late, the Jean-Claude Rouget-trained G1 Prix du Jockey Club and G1 Grand Prix de Paris entry who races for Claudio and Edoardo Marzocco and Free Man Racing hit the line with seven lengths to spare over Juddmonte's Broadfield (GB) (Almanzor {Fr}), who was in turn a neck ahead of Barbate (GB) (Frankel {GB}).

Bruno Barbereau, racing manager for Claudio Marzocco, was not surprised by this eye-catching debut. “This is a horse that Jean-Claude liked very much last year and he was working with his best two-year-olds in the summer,” he explained. “He was supposed to have his first start at Deauville in the Prix de Crèvecoeur [eventually won by Rouget's leading Classic hope Rajapour], but he was lame a few days before with a minor problem and he couldn't make it to the races at two. Hopefully he will make up for lost time this year.”

Bought for €120,000 at the Arqana Deauville October Yearling Sale, the winner is out of the Car Colston Hall Stud-bred Silver Bark (GB) (Royal Applause {GB}) who is a full-sister to the GI American Oaks Invitational and GI Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup-winning luminary Ticker Tape (GB). Responsible for the listed-placed Toofi (Fr) (Henrythenavigator) and Silver Meadow (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), she is also the second dam of the Listed Burradon S. runner-up Legion Of Honour (GB) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) who went on to race in Hong Kong as Fly On Earth.

The second dam Argent Du Bois (Silver Hawk) also produced the high-class G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest-winning sprinter Brando (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), while Ticker Tape's daughter Royal Decree (Street Cry {Ire}) was in turn responsible for the G2 Vintage S.-winning sire War Decree (War Front) and the GII Sands Point S. scorer Skims (GB) (Frankel {GB}). Another stakes performer out of Argent Du Bois was Sant Elena (GB) (Efisio {GB}), who is the dam of the G1 Prix Morny and G1 Middle Park S. winner Reckless Abandon (GB) (Exchange Rate), the G3 Prix Paul de Moussac winner Erasmo (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and the group-placed Best Approach (GB) (New Approach {Ire}). Another descendant of Argent Du Bois is the G3 Sweet Solera S. scorer West End Girl (GB) (Golden Horn {GB}), while the family also features the G1 Racing Post Trophy hero Crowded House (GB) (Rainbow Quest) and last year's G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains third Tribalist (GB) (Farhh {GB}). Having provided the sire with his first TDN Rising Star, Silver Bark's 2-year-old filly Coeur d'Argent (Fr) is by his studmate Masar (Ire).

Expensive Into Mischief Breezer Kicks Off at HQ

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. With plenty of interest from an American-bred perspective this weekend, here are the runners for Saturday's programs at Tokyo and Hanshin Racecourses. A pair of juveniles will be features in this space in Sunday's TDN:

4th-TOK, ¥13,400,000 ($96k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1400m
GREAT SAND SEA (c, 2, Into Mischief–Game for More, by More Than Ready), purchased for $385,000 at Keeneland September with an eye on the juvenile sales, was the recipient of a nice pedigree update a short time thereafter when his year-younger half-brother Giant Game (Giant's Causeway) finished third in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile. The Apr. 6 foal, also a half-brother to the versatile MGSW & GISP Isotherm (Lonhro {Aus}) and to GISP Gio Game (Gio Ponti), did his part to enhance his value by working a furlong in :10 flat ahead of this year's OBS April Sale and was hammered down for $825,000. 5th-HSN, ¥13,400,000 ($96k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1200mT
SMOKIN' BILLY (c, 2, Free Drop Billy–Buy for Less, by Bodemeister) made just $8,500 as a weanling at Keeneland November in 2020, but improved into a $40,000 Fasig-Tipton October yearling and fetched a strong $230,000 at OBS April after he breezed in :10 flat. That price ranks as the highest of 17 juveniles (19 ring) reported as sold from the first crop of his sire (by Union Rags). Smokin' Billy is the first foal from a winning daughter of SW Ayla Bella (Touch Gold). B-Mullikin Thoroughbreds (KY)

6th-HSN, ¥13,400,000 ($96k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1400m
JOVIAN (c, 2, Justify–Runway Doll, by Majestic Warrior) debuts in the yellow-and-red silks of Kazumi Yoshida, with the visiting Cristian Demuro set to take the reins aboard the $250,000 OBS March breezer (:9 4/5). A half-brother to an Uncle Mo colt that sold to Donegal Racing for $200,000 at the Fasig-Tipton July sale, the bay is out of a half-sister to SW Song Warrior (Songandaprayer), who was acquired by this breeder for $380,000 in foal to American Pharoh at KEENOV in 2018. ESSENTIAL ONE (f, 2, Bernardini–Indelible, by Tiznow) was acquired in utero for $130,000 at the 2019 Keeneland November Sale about 12 months before her dam's 'TDN Rising Star' half-brother Essential Quality (Tapit) closed a championship season with a victory in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile. On the heels of that success, Indelible was put through the 2020 Fasig-Tipton November Sale, where she realized a final bid of $1.6 million from Japan's Nobutaka Tada. This is the family of champion Folklore (Tiznow), whose daughter Rhodochrosite (Unbridled's Song) is the dam of Japanese Triple Crown hero Contrail (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}). Immaculately Bred Geraldina Lands QE II, ‘Lagoon’ Struggles

Between them, Maurice (Jpn) (Screen Hero {Jpn}) and Gentildonna (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) accounted for three Horse of the Year titles in Japan, 13 Group 1 races–including four overseas–and the better part of $28 million in prizemoney. There is no such thing as a sure thing in the business of breeding horses, but Geraldina (Jpn) went some ways in cementing the accomplishments of mom and dad in their second careers with a tough-trip victory in Sunday's G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup at Hanshin Racecourse.

Drawn widest in the field of 18, Geraldina was away without incident, but Cristian Demuro was left with no real option but to attempt to slot his mount in towards the back of the pack, as 82-1 Rosa Noir (Jpn) (Manhattan Cafe {Jpn}) made the running in advance of G1 Juddmonte Irish Oaks heroine Magical Lagoon (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Demuro had Geraldina positioned in the latter third of the field over a rain-affected course and raced as many as six paths off the inside, covering the well-bet G1 Shuka Sho runner-up Namur (Jpn) (Harbinger {GB}) while racing with the benefit of cover on the back of longshot Terzetto (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}). Improving her position as they hit the final turn, Geraldina was pulled out six or seven deep nearing the straight and had dead aim on Win Marilyn (Jpn) (Screen Hero {Jpn}), who overhauled Rosa Noir approaching the furlong pole. The two dueled for a stride or two, but Geraldina–a spitting image of her sire and dam–kicked on strongly despite the wide passage and proved a much-the-best winner. Lilac (Jpn) (Orfevre {Jpn}) was up on the wire to dead-heat for second, while defending champion Akai Ito (Jpn) (Kizuna {Jpn}) closed off well for fourth. Daring Tact (Jpn) (Epiphaneia {Jpn}) was only sixth as a somewhat suspect favourite. It was a third QE II win in four years for Sunday Racing, who were represented by Lucky Lilac (Jpn) (Orfevre {Jpn}) in 2019 and 2020.

“I'm very happy I was able to win another Group 1 race,” said Demuro, whose brother Mirco was aboard Lilac. “The filly was traveling very well in the last corner, came out and gave a good turn of foot. The last time when she won [G2 Sankei Sho All Comers S. Sept. 25], it was a good race, so I was pretty confident with her. Gentildonna was a good filly and I think Geraldina can be like her dam.”

Demuro also carried the Sunday Racing colours aboard Shahryar (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) in this year's G1 Longines Dubai Sheema Classic.

Magical Lagoon, who was a bit uncooperative pre-start, raced handy to the pace, but began to struggle a half-mile from home and was effectively eased up in the final furlong with a clear alibi.

“We were able to race in a good position, but she likes quick ground and the rain, unfortunately, took her chance away,” said jockey Shane Foley. “I urged her to go from the third corner, but she didn't respond. I don't know why she didn't want to go into the gate because she's usually really good.”

Pedigree Notes:

Geraldina is the fourth Group 1 winner overall for Maurice and his second in Japan, joining Sprinters' S. hero Pixie Knight (Jpn). He has also been represented by Australian Derby hero Hitotsu (Aus) and Doomben 10,000 S. winner Mazu (Aus) from his shuttle missions to Arrowfield Stud.

Gentildonna is the second foal out of Donna Blini, who cost a mere £20,000 at the 2004 Doncaster St Leger yearling sale, but was purchased by Katsumi Yoshida just over two years later for 500,000gns ($1,014,038) owing to the filly's 12-1 upset in the G1 Cheveley Park S. for trainer Brian Meehan in 2005. Donna Blini was off to a flyer in the breeding shed, producing future MGSW & MG1SP Donau Blue (Jpn) to the cover of Deep Impact in 2008 and Gentildonna in 2009.

Winner of the Japanese Filly Triple Crown in 2012, Gentildonna defeated Orfevre in an epic renewal of the G1 Japan Cup that fall before successfully defending her title 12 months later. She carried Ryan Moore to a famous victory over Cirrus des Aigles (Fr) in the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic when kept in training at five and closed her career with 7-1 score in the 2014 G1 Arima Kinen.

Gentildonna is also the dam of three-time maiden Marina Donna (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}) and a yearling full-sister to Geraldina. She was barren to Epiphaneia (Jpn) for 2022.

Half-Sister To Sottsass Earns TDN Rising Star Rosette At Deauville

Ecurie des Monceaux's unraced 2-year-old filly Snowpark (Fr) (Dubawi {Ire}–Starlet's Sister {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}), a half-sister to Sottsass (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), went postward at odds of 37-10 for Thursday's Prix de Hotot-En-Auge over one mile at Deauville and returned home with a 'TDN Rising Star' rosette after producing an impressive closing burst in the debutantes' heat. Snowpark was swiftly into stride from the inside stall and raced in a close-up third through the early stages. Shuffled down to fifth soon after turning for home, she was shaken up approaching the final furlong and quickened stylishly under mild urging in the closing stages to deny Kamiyah (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), herself a half-sister to G1 Prix Jacques Le Marois-winning sire Al Wukair (Ire) (Dream Ahead), by a half-length nearing the line.

Snowpark is the seventh of nine foals and sixth scorer from as many runners produced by a full-sister to G3 Prix Cleopatre victrix Leo's Starlet (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). The April-foaled bay's dam Starlet's Sister (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) is also a half-sister to stakes-winning GI Clement L Hirsch H. runner-up and G1 Prix Saint-Alary third Anabaa's Creation (Ire) (Anabaa), herself the dam of the stakes-winning Create A Dream (Oasis Dream {GB}).
