MHBA Announces New Incentives to Reward Breeders

The Maryland Bred Fund will implement additional incentives that have been approved by the Maryland Racing Commission, the Maryland Horse Breeders Association announced Wednesday.

In addition to increasing breeder and stallion bonuses on all stakes races in Maryland, there will be two new plans to incentivize and reward breeders of Maryland-sired horses:

Beginning Jan. 1, 2022, an additional 10% Breeder Bonus (for a total of 40%, with the existing 30%), to all Maryland-Sired and Maryland-Bred Maiden winners in Maryland.

Beginning with Maryland-bred foals of 2023 (2-Year-Olds of 2025), there will be a tiered Breeder Bonus system. The proposed percentages for that system are 35% Breeder Bonus to Maryland-Sired and Maryland-Bred and 25% to Maryland-Bred (or 40% more for Maryland-sired/Maryland-bred) paid for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, on all overnight races.
Additionally, beginning Jan. 1, 2022:

The bonus percentages for all stakes in Maryland will be Breeder 30% and Stallion 10% paid for 1st, 2nd, 3rd.

“The purpose of these latest programs is to incentivize mare owners to breed to Maryland stallions,” said Cricket Goodall, executive director of the Maryland Horse Breeders Association. “We have a great stallion roster already and some new stallions are coming to Maryland for the upcoming season. Our goal is, and will always be, to reward everyone who breeds, foals and races in Maryland.”

MHF Launches Capital Campaign

The Maryland Horse Foundation has announced the launch of the Maryland Horse Library and Education Center Capital Campaign, which will honor the history of horses in the state and serve as a hub for learning and collaboration.

“The way [into the horse industry] is through learning, so that's the most exciting aspect of this project,” said Josh Pons, co-chair of the Capital Campaign and president of the Maryland Horse Foundation. “There's someone out there who has a passion for the game but just doesn't know how to get started, and we could be that gateway for people, the portal where people….go 'wow, I met someone really interesting doing research in that library.'”

The campaign seeks to raise $1 million that will be used to update 3500 square feet of space in the Maryland Horse Breeders' Association's building in Reistertown. The funds will also be used to purchase furnishings, integrate current audio/video technologies and support ongoing operational costs.

“We're including all aspects of the industry–horse sports, horse activities–in what we do here and offering that to people who want to come learn,” said Cricket Goodall, executive director of the Maryland Horse Breeders Association. “That's the full circle from the founding of Maryland Horse Breeders Association in 1929, and the Maryland Horse Foundation has allowed us to amplify the focus on education.”

Maryland Thoroughbred Hall of Fame Inductees Selected

Eclipse champions Heavenly Cause and What a Summer have been inducted into the Maryland-bred Thoroughbred Hall of Fame.

The selections were made by a committee of Maryland racing industry members coordinated by the Maryland Horse Breeders Association and Maryland Racing Media Association.

“These two great mares deserve their place of honor among our Hall of Fame horses. They were the product of dedicated Maryland breeders who were rewarded with great champions,” said Cricket Goodall, executive director of Maryland Horse Breeders Association.

What a Summer, a two-time GII Fall Highweight H. winner over males, was the Eclipse Award-winning champion sprinter of 1977. Five-time Grade I heroine Heavenly Cause was the top 2-year-old filly in the nation in 1980 and added the GI Kentucky Oaks the following term.

“Our latest class of Hall of Famers, both Eclipse champions, speaks to the depth and quality of the Maryland breeding program over many years,” said Maryland Racing Media Association president Frank Vespe. “It’s remarkable how many deserving horses we’ve named to the Hall of Fame – and how many we still have to name.”
