Creative Force Rerouted From Saudi Arabia To Al Quoz Sprint After Spiking A Temperature

Godolphin's Group 1 winner Creative Force (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) has been removed from consideration for the $30.35-million Saudi Cup meeting after spiking a temperature, and will instead target the G1 Al Quoz Sprint in Dubai next month.

“Creative Force spiked a temperature earlier today and following unsatisfactory blood tests, it has been decided that he will not travel to Saudi Arabia,” Godolphin tweeted. “He will now be aimed at the Al Quoz Sprint on Dubai World Cup night.”

Trained by Charlie Appleby, the 5-year-old gelding won the G1 British Champions Sprint S. in October of 2021. Last year he placed three times at that tier when second in the Platinum Jubilee S. at Royal Ascot in June second up, then ran fourth in the July S. His latest efforts were a pair of thirds–defending his title on QIPCO British Champions Day, and in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint at Keeneland in November.

Dubawi’s Creative Force In Control In The Sprint

Godolphin's G3 Jersey S. hero Creative Force (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) had failed to strike in three outings since registering that June 19 Royal Ascot triumph and went postward for Saturday's G1 British Champions Sprint back at the Berskhire venue coming off a three-length sixth in last month's G1 Sprint Cup at Haydock. Notable as Charlie Appleby's first Champions Day contender, he kept jockey William Buick's jockeys' championship hopes alive with a decisive victory in the six-furlong dash. The €400,000 Goffs Orby yearling had sealed a run of four straight wins in the Jersey and has since run fifth in Newmarket's July 10 G1 July Cup and second contesting Goodwood's July 27 G2 Lennox S. in his penultimate start. The eventual winner was positioned sixth within range of the leaders through the early fractions until making a manoeuvre to slipstream the pacesetting Glen Shiel (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) at the quarter-mile marker. Easing out of that rival's wake to seize control approaching the final furlong, the 11-2 chance was not for catching thereafter and was ridden out in the closing stages to hit the line with a one-length advantage as low-drawn runners dominated. Shadwell's Minzaal (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) closed late to finish a length behind Glen Shiel in third while King Power Racing's 3-1 favourite Art Power (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) was compromised by his stands' side drawn and ran on strongly to fail by head for third.

“I'm delighted, it's a great team result, it's been a great season and this lad deserves it,” beamed trainer Charlie Appleby after marching to the cusp of a first trainers' championship. “James Doyle felt he was a sprinter earlier this season and I was confident with this horse after Haydock, where the ground was too fast for him. I'm delighted for the horse because he has been on the go all year. He was out at the Craven Meeting and rose through the ranks and came here to win the Jersey at the Royal meeting. We've been lucky with the likes of Blue Point at this level and this guy can travel for fun. William [Buick] was confident riding him and he has won over seven furlongs here, so he wasn't going to stop. This was my first runner at Champions Day, it's a fantastic crowd and the sun is shining down. It's soft ground and that is what we expect at this time of year, but it is not dead ground as they are going through it. Creative Force is a typical Dubawi who should get better with age and the sprint division is there for someone to take the mantle next year. We've been looking for a new star sprinter since Blue Point was retired and this horse can be a fun horse for the next year or two. There's a hole there to be filled and I think he is a young enough horse to do that.”

“Creative Force won the Jersey here and goes through that ground, which is a big help, and he really did deserve it,” said rider William Buick, who would ultimately finish two winners shy of sharing the jockeys' championship with Oisin Murphy. “The ground was very fast and he stumbled out of the stalls at Haydock. It's game over if you stumble out of the stalls in a six-furlong Group 1, but he did get himself back into it and he ran well. Today's race worked out perfectly as we had a nice draw and I liked the look of it. It worked out how I wanted it to and he was in good form going into it. He certainly deserved it, but we thought it was a good chance for him to show his best today. There were a lot of runners and they all turned up, but he travelled into it very smoothly and it was a case of just waiting with him a little bit.”

Reflecting on Buick's failed title challenge, Appleby said, “I think it's something that William himself will say he has enjoyed and it's all very well riding these good horses at the big meetings, but he's been mucking it out round the smaller tracks. Success breeds success and you can't beat having winners so William riding more has given him more opportunity to ride more winners and I think we've seen a better rider. He has always been a rider at the top of his game, but now he's riding so many of these horses and so many different types of horses. I noticed at the back end of last year his style of riding was changing and we've seen that hunger this year. Win, lose or draw, William isn't going to walk away deflated from what he's achieved this year. He has that character that he will go forward again and do the same next year. For me, he's a huge part of the team and the more winners he rides, the happier I am. It's a sporting industry and the last thing you want is someone who is sat on the bench for the week and then coming out on the weekend. It's alright when you do it at a certain level of your career, but William is too young to be doing that just yet.”

Archie Watson was far from downhearted with the display of runner-up Glen Shiel, who also ran second in this year's G1 Diamond Jubilee S. at the Royal meeting. “He does come alive here, that's his second Group 1 second place here this year and I am delighted,” the trainer said. “The first-time blinkers worked, they really lit him up and he jumped and travelled very well. He quickened away and just found one very good horse of Charlie's to beat him. He's just a dream for the owners to have and a dream for us to have.”

Hollie Doyle, who took the meeting opener aboard Trueshan (Fr) (Planteur {Ire}) in the G1 British Champions Long Distance Cup, made a bold attempt to lead out from the front on 22-1 chance Glen Shiel (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), but was denied by a superior force on the day. “It was another brilliant run from Glen Shiel and he is such a credit to connections,” she commented.

Creative Force becomes the 46th Group 1 winner for his sire (by Dubai Millennium {GB}) and is one of three stakes winners produced by Listed Fairy Bridge S. victrix and G2 Blandford S. placegetter Choose Me (Ire) (Choisir {Aus}), herself kin to Listed Waterford Testimonial S. victor Shanghai Glory (Ire) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}). The March-foaled chestnut is a half-brother G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. heroine Persuasive (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), stakes-winning G3 Prix de Lieurey runner-up Tisbutadream (Ire) (Dream Ahead), the unraced 2-year-old colt Mr Zero (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and a yearling filly by Dark Angel (Ire). Creative Force's third dam Ajuga (The Minstrel) finished third in the Listed Sandy Lane S. and has three black-type winners to her credit headed by G2 EuropaChampionat scorer Bad Bertrich Again (Ire) (Dowsing) and Listed Cheshire Oaks victrix Alumni (GB) (Selkirk), herself the dam of Czechoslovakian champion and stakes-winning G2 Prix Daniel Wildenstein and G2 Oettingen-Rennen runner-up Dux Scholar (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}). His fourth dam is the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas and G1 Champion S. heroine Cairn Rouge (Ire) (Pitcairn {Ire}), whose descendants are headed by dual G1 Paddock S. heroine Queen Supreme (Ire) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) and elite-level winners Ventura (Chester House) and Harlem (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}).

Adayar Possible For QIPCO Champion S.

Godolphin's G1 Cazoo Derby and G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. winner Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) might be seen once more this season in the G1 QIPCO Champion S. at Ascot on Oct. 16. Fourth in the G1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe after leading into the home straight, the bay has been pleasing trainer Charlie Appleby since his run in Paris.

“He will be left in the Champion S. tomorrow, for the simple reason at the moment he has come out of the Arc well,” Appleby told Racing TV's Luck On Sunday. “Should connections ask me next week how the horse is, and I say 'jumping around' and they say 'where can we go?', I'd look a bit daft saying I'd taken him out of the Champion S. on the Monday.

“He will stay in tomorrow. We've an open book and should connections want to run him again and I can't at that time give a negative for not to run him, then the Champion S. will be looked at.”

Appleby also provided an update on G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas runner-up Master Of The Seas (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), who will run in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. The G3 Craven S. hero was last seen running third in the G2 Joel S. at Newmarket on Sept. 24. Godolphin stablemate and Group 3 winner Creative Force (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) will also be in action on QIPCO Champions Day, but in the G1 Champions Sprint.

“The way the weather forecast is potentially looking, Master Of The Seas will run in the QEII and Creative Force will head to the Champions Sprint. Two handy horses,” he said. “Creative Force is learning how to sprint now. We've seen what he can do over seven. He's been competitive at six and he's still learning. As we all know, dropping back into sprinting divisions at that level it takes a bit of getting the hang of, but he's getting there and he'll go into the weekend a big player.

“Master Of The Seas has definitely come on for that run in the Joel and we're looking forward to him.”

Starman Primed For Cup Double

Bidding to follow in the steps of Harry Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and Dream Ahead (Diktat {GB}), Starman (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}) is the latest G1 July Cup hero to attempt a notable double in Saturday's G1 Betfair Sprint Cup at Haydock.

Only third behind Marianafoot (Fr) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}) on unsuitably soft ground in the 6 1/2-furlong G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville Aug. 8, David Ward's homebred is back on his favoured fast surface over the six-furlong trip of his July 10 Newmarket victory.

Trainer Ed Walker is happy that the stars have aligned for the 4-year-old and said, “I am quite surprised to be here really. We always wanted to come to the Sprint Cup, but historically we thought it would be unlikely given the horse's preference for good ground. It's a real bonus to be going into the race with conditions likely to be in his favour. It was a career highlight when he won the July Cup. It was great that he was able to show what he can really do, as I've always believed he is a truly exceptional horse.”

“He still ran a massive race at Deauville and ran better than he did in the really heavy conditions at Ascot on Champions Day last year. It was proper stamina-sapping ground in France, it was drying quite quickly and it was tacky. He coped with it and was bang there at the six-furlong pole–I think with the extra half-furlong and the conditions his stamina was really tested. He has trained great since France and came out of the race well. We've just freshened him up. He is a big horse but doesn't take a huge amount of work. He goes there in great shape. I think he is the best horse in the race and if he is in the same form that he was at Newmarket, he will prove that.”

Fifth in the July Cup and subsequently second in the seven-furlong G2 Lennox S. at Goodwood July 27, Godolphin's June 19 G3 Jersey S. winner Creative Force (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) tries again with Charlie Appleby hoping he can bridge the gap to Starman.

“We have been very pleased with Creative Force's preparation. We thought it was a very respectable first run at this level in the July Cup, when he learned plenty about sprinting and we are hoping that a more polished performer will be turning up here,” he said. “James Doyle felt that he rode like a sprinter in the Lennox S. He hit the lids that day, was up in the van the whole way and possibly did a bit too much early on, so the return to six furlongs should suit.”

Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum's Emaraaty Ana (GB) (Shamardal) has turned around his fortunes with a confidence-restoring win in a five-furlong conditions race at Hamilton at the end of last month and a second in the G1 Nunthorpe S. at that distance Aug. 20. He has the ground he likes here and is equally at home over six, but more importantly comes into this on a high. That is not the case for Jason Goddard's Supremacy (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}), who needs to bounce back from two surprisingly tame efforts this term including a latest 15th in the July Cup. Successful in last year's G1 Middle Park S. and G2 Richmond S., it is disappointing that he has run so far below form in 2021 and would be a major threat if able to regain his momentum.

2-Year-Olds on Display at Haydock

Haydock's card begins with the Listed Betfair Exchange Ascendant S. for 2-year-olds over a mile, where Godolphin are represented by the 2.1million gns Book 1 graduate Hafit (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). He beat two subsequent winners including the TDN Rising Star Razzle Dazzle (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}) on his debut over seven furlongs at Newmarket Aug. 6 and could be anything, but lying in wait is Dr. Ali Ridha's Aug. 20 Listed Stonehenge S. runner-up Power of Beauty (Ire) (Slade Power {Ire}). Hafit's trainer Charlie Appleby has a line to that Hugo Palmer-trained colt through the Stonehenge winner Albahr (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), while Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum's 9 1/2-length course-and-distance novice scorer Triple Time (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) is another of the quartet with abundant promise.

Kempton Hosts Group 3s

At Kempton, the feature is the G3 Unibet September S. over a mile and a half, where Shadwell's July 10 G3 Silver Cup and Aug. 14 G3 Geoffrey Freer S. winner Hukum (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) looks to continue his sequence under a three-pound penalty.

“This looks another nice opportunity for him, all being well, and he won around Kempton as a 2-year-old,” trainer Owen Burrows said of the 4-year-old, who missed the G2 Grand Prix de Deauville due to a dirty scope. “He has got the penalty again, but he had that at Newbury and we go there very hopeful. He did a little bit of work on Wednesday and we were very happy with him and there were no signs that he should not be running.”

Also on the card is the six-furlong G3 Sirenia S. for the juveniles, with Kevin Phillipart De Foy pitching in Bernard Havern's July 7 course-and-distance novice winner Scot's Grace (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}). “I've been a bit unlucky, as she needs fast ground,” he explained. “She has had a couple of entries over the summer, but the ground has turned against her. She handled the track there first time out, so we thought this was worth taking a punt and see how she gets on in the race. I never put my fillies under too much pressure at home and we will learn a lot more on Saturday. She has improved a bit, but she will need to on Saturday.”

Hugo Palmer is represented by David Howden and Qatar Racing's Hierarchy (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}), who has registered wins in novices over this trip at Wolverhampton Aug. 9 and at Salisbury Aug. 24. “His heart is in the right place and he seems to be improving as a 2-year-old,” he said. “He is showing the general public what he can do in the afternoon opposed to showing it in the morning, as he definitely saves his best for racing. He handles the surface, has a nice draw and has got the momentum behind him. He is very much a 2-year-old and though I'm not saying he will not make it at three, he would need to grow and develop.”

Festival Continues at Baden-Baden

There is also pattern-race action at Baden-Baden, with Darius Racing's Aug. 1 G1 Preis der Diana runner-up Isfahani (Ger) (Isfahan {Ger}) taking on the likes of Team Valor's Hanover listed scorer Loveisthehigherlaw (GB) (Kodiac {GB}) in the 12-furlong G2 T von Zastrow Stutenpreis. In the six-furlong G3 Casino Baden-Baden Goldene Peitsche, another Darius Racing representative in Rubaiyat (Fr) (Areion {Ger}) is a leading contender based on his success in Hanover's Apr. 25 Listed Waldpfad Cup reverting to sprinting. Runner-up on that occasion, Jaber Abdullah's Majestic Colt (Ire) (Clodovil {Ire}) has since won the G3 Silberne -Peitsche at Cologne May 24 and July 2 G3 Grosser Preis von LOTTO Hamburg and finished fourth behind Dibujaba (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}) in the Aug. 8 Listed Hoppegartener Fleiger-Preis.

A Sextet for the Moulin

Sunday's G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp has attracted six, with Jim Bolger opting to withdraw Poetic Flare (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}). Shadwell's unbeaten Baaeed (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) is certain to occupy favouritism based on his impressive successes in Newmarket's Listed Sir Henry Cecil S. July 8 and the G3 Thoroughbred S. at Goodwood July 30, with fellow British raider Snow Lantern (GB) (Frankel {GB}) standing in his way. Rockcliffe Stud's 'TDN Rising Star' captured the star-studded G1 Falmouth S. at Newmarket July 9 before finishing third in the G1 Sussex S. at Goodwood July 28 and trainer Richard Hannon has been forced to saddle her with her signals all vibrant since that race.

“Hopefully this race will show her in a better light–I think she could have been closer at Goodwood,” he said. “It's a very good race and we'll find out where we stand. We can always go back to fillies-only company in the Sun Chariot after this. Baaeed has looked very good and I'm sure he'll take a lot of beating. He travels very well in his races and in some of his races he's looked unbeatable. I'm sure it will be a good race and I'm looking forward to it–we have nothing to lose.”
