Creative Cause Relocated To Texas

GISW Creative Cause (Giant's Causeway) has relocated from Kentucky's Airdrie Stud to Marjorie Farms in Texas where he will stand the 2024 season for $6,000. The move was announced Thursday by the Texas Thoroughbred Association.

“He has meant a lot to us over the years and I am very thankful that he will be able to continue his career where he will get the mare support he deserves,” said Airdrie's Bret Jones.

“Texas and generally the Southwest is ready to take a big step forward and the addition of such an incredible stallion does just that,” added Marjorie Farm owners John and Elisabeth Hay.

Creative Cause Colt Garners ‘TDN Rising Star’-dom in Post-Derby Allowance

Bo Cruz (Creative Cause), away since a 12 1/4-length maiden romp on the stretch out at Fair Grounds Mar. 4, stamped himself as one to watch on the sophomore scene going forward–and a 'TDN Rising Star'–as he easily handled a strong-looking group of runners in the race following the GI Kentucky Derby.

The grey was second on debut sprinting in NOLA Feb. 5, but put it all together next out, earning a 91 Beyer Speed Figure for his graduation score. With clocker and agent Bruno DeJulio listed as sole owner for the colt's prior starts, Bo Cruz resurfaced here with Skyscraper Racing, Brian Pagano and Patrick Grippo added to the owner line.

Off at 7-2 as big-figure Keeneland debut winner Equivoque (Good Magic) took the most tote attention, Bo Cruz immediately seized command and cleared off by several lengths, posting splits of :24.11 and :47.96. Equivoque ranged up outside of another pursuer to try and make a race of it heading for home, but Bo Cruz had other ideas, slamming the door shut in midstretch and quickly widening his advantage to score by an auspicious three lengths in 1:43.07. Classic Legacy (Into Mischief), the half-brother to Art Collector (Bernardini) who was third last time in the GIII Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby, completed the trifecta.

The winner's dam is a half-sister to 2017 GI Preakness S. winner Cloud Computing (Maclean's Music). His third dam is GISW Halo America (Waquoit). Quick Breeze fetched just $7,500 while in foal to Great Notion at the 2022 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Winter Mixed Sale. She died after producing a colt that May.

Continuar Out Of Derby, King Russell In As Last AE

Lion Horse Race Co. Ltd.'s Continuar (Jpn) (Drefong) will reportedly be scratched from this year's GI Kentucky Derby, according to trainer Yoshito Yahagi.

“After evaluating the colt upon my arrival, I feel that he has not been able to reach the peak fitness required to take on a race as tough as the Kentucky Derby,” Yahagi said. “Considering the future of the horse and the fact that we cannot show the horse's true ability in his current state, we have decided to scratch Continuar from the Kentucky Derby. I am very sorry that I cannot participate in the world's number one horse racing festival, however I sincerely hope to return to the Derby in the future. I want to thank everyone who has supported Continuar and Yahagi Stable on this journey.”

Continuar qualified for the Kentucky Derby through the Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby point series where he received an invitation to compete in the first leg of the Triple Crown. With this defection, Brereton Jones and Naber Racing's King Russell (Creative Cause), trained by Ron Moquett, will draw into the field and break from the outside post 20. The program number 23 will remain the same. King Russell will be ridden by Rafael Bejarano.

“You can't help but feel for the ones that scratch,” Moquett said by phone, when asked about the news that his horse had drawn in. “This is an opportunity for the team, our owners and we have been here all week preparing just like King Russell was already entered. We know he is special horse and like Babe Ruth calling his shot, I predicted that he would finish in the top three in the Arkansas Derby and that he would be in the [Kentucky] Derby. Here we are. After the training, pointing him here, galloping, schooling, we are going to see if he can get the mile and a quarter. I've been here before with Far Right in 2015 and that following year with Whitmore, and now it is time to get down to business because we are wanting to do more.”

Scratch time for Kentucky Derby 149 is Friday at 9 a.m. ET.
