Santa Anita Named Host of 2023 Breeders’ Cup

Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California, will host the 2023 Breeders' Cup World Championships for a record 11th time. The 40th renewal of the Breeders' Cup will take place Friday and Saturday, Nov. 3 and 4, 2023.

Santa Anita's outstanding reputation and scenic venue provide us with the ideal setting to continue to grow our audience by combining the best that racing, hospitality, and entertainment have to offer.”

Based on a 2017 study, Breeders' Cup officials expect the 2023 event to have a near $100-million economic impact on Southern California. Previous runnings of the Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita have consistently set the standard for both wagering and attendance figures. The 2016 event was witnessed by a record 118,484 fans, while handle for the 2019 renewal was a record $175 million.

Gregg Colvin Named CEO Of 1/ST Content

1/ST Content, the innovative operating group for 1/ST's media and content companies, announced the appointment of senior media executive Gregg Colvin as chief executive officer.

As CEO of 1/ST Content, Gregg Colvin will work with chief operating officer Jason Wilson to further develop and support the ongoing transformation of the 1/ST Content brands into a modern and cohesive entity to attract and retain a new group of consumers.

Colvin will collaborate with Craig Fravel, Aidan Butler and the 1/ST Racing team along with Paul Williams and the 1/ST Technology team on an integrated strategy to produce and deliver new content offerings, enhanced quality of production and new simulcast distribution platforms for the company's Thoroughbred horse racing and wagering products while continuing to build competitive platforms to service customers in dynamic new ways.

Colvin is a respected senior media executive who has served in leadership roles at leading global companies such as Fox and Universal McCann. Most recently, he served as Chief Executive Officer of 421 Media, an innovative social media firm that owns and operates hundreds of channels across Instagram and TikTok with a global audience of more than 275 million viewers. Colvin has executed ground-breaking streaming deals and led omni-channel innovations for consumer-focused brands like Sony and Fox.

Aidan Butler, who previously served as president of the 1/ST Content business unit, will continue to be involved to drive and support the synchronization and alignment of the company's horse racing and content platforms in collaboration with Colvin.

Record $27.7 Million Wagered On Pimlico’s Black-Eyed Susan Day Program

The Maryland Jockey Club and 1/ST Racing announced Friday's 97th Black-Eyed Susan Day at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Md., produced a record total handle of $27.675 million.

The 97th running of the Black-Eyed Susan, won by Three Diamonds Farm's Army Wife, was the highlight of a 14-race program featuring six stakes, four graded, totaling $1 million in purses.

Friday's record handle eclipsed the previous record set in 2019 of $21.349 million. Attendance Friday on the day was capped at 10,000.

“We're pleased Black-Eyed Susan Day produced some fantastic racing by some extraordinary horses, and it was nice to see people at the track having a fantastic time,” said Craig Fravel, CEO 1/ST Racing. “We want to thank the horsemen for supporting this day of racing and our racing office that did such a great job putting the program together. We're looking forward to Saturday and Preakness 146.”
