Spanish Mission Enters Quarantine in Advance of Australian Targets

The well-traveled group winner Spanish Mission (Noble Mission {GB}) will enter quarantine on Thursday before traveling to Australia. His goals Down Under include the Oct. 16 G1 Carlton Draught Caulfield Cup and the Nov. 2 G1 Lexus Melbourne Cup. The May 2 Yorkshire Cup S. hero, who races for Team Valor LLC and Gary Barber, was last seen running second to Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in the G2 Lonsdale Cup S. at York on Aug. 20. Trainer Andrew Balding is pleased with the 5-year-old entire and hopeful of a good showing Down Under. The bay also ran third in the Jun 17 G1 Gold Cup at Royal Ascot.

“He goes into quarantine in Newmarket–I couldn't be happier with him, he's come out of York great,” said Balding of his charge, who placed second in the Feb. 20 Red Sea Turf H. to open his season in Saudi Arabia before a fifth-place run in the G2 Dubai Gold Cup at Meydan on Mar. 27. “He's passed all his required veterinary checks and goes into two weeks' quarantine and then will be shipped to Australia for the Caulfield Cup and hopefully the Melbourne Cup as well.”

Balding added of the strict covid restrictions in Australia that will prevent him sending one of his staff, “It is a problem. Happily we've got a former employee who is working in Australia and has made himself available to ride the horse. We are working on the other details.”

Four Australian Jockeys Suspended Three Months For Breach Of COVID-19 Protocols

Leading Australian jockey Jamie Kah was issued a three-month suspension on Monday, reports skysports.com, due to a breach in COVID-19 protocols of both state government and racing regulators. Also issued similar suspensions were jockeys Ben Melham, Ethan Brown, and Celine Gaudray.

The group was found to have attended a gathering at an Airbnb on Wednesday evening. Racing Victoria suspended each of the four jockeys through Nov. 25.

“I want to apologize for my recent behavior in breaching the government and racing Covid rules,” Kah wrote on Twitter. “I am deeply embarrassed and disappointed with myself. There is no excuse for what I have done and I have let myself down, my family and friends, the racing industry and all Victorians who are doing the right thing in this lockdown. I deserve the penalty handed down by the stewards and will take time to reflect on my actions and its impact on so many people.”

Rising COVID Rates Force Cancellation Of New York Race Track Chaplaincy’s Charity Basketball Game

The 13th annual jockeys-versus-horsemen charity basketball game, which benefits the programs of the New York Race Track Chaplaincy and was scheduled to be played on Wednesday, Sept. 1, has been canceled, the organization announced today.

“With COVID-19 infection rates climbing again, we just couldn't jeopardize the safety of the participants or the hundreds of fans who come to the game each year, so we decided it was best to cancel it once again,” said NY Race Track Chaplaincy executive director and lead chaplain Humberto Chavez. “We are all disappointed but hopefully we can resume the tradition next summer during the Saratoga meet.”

The game, which was not able to be played last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is one of the most popular events on the Saratoga social calendar and it routinely attracts more than 300 fans.

The jockey team is usually coached by Hall of Fame jockey Ángel Cordero Jr., with trainer Todd Pletcher and agent Kiaran McLaughlin coaching the horsemen team. Mitch Levites of the NYRA television department serves as the announcer and provides lively commentary.

Proceeds from this event serve to benefit signature programs of the NY Race Track Chaplaincy.

The NY Race Track Chaplaincy provides the backstretch community with children's enrichment, social service, and recreational programs, as well as educational opportunities, and non-denominational religious services.

Horsemen, individuals, or organizations who would like to make a donation to the NY Chaplaincy may do so via the NY Chaplaincy website at www.rtcany.org or by contacting Eleanor Poppe at info@rtcany.org or 516-428-5267.

Potentially Life-Threatening COVID “Cure” Sees Dewormer Sales Surging

Though the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have repeatedly warned the public against using ivermectin as a COVID-19 “cure,” the United States is seeing a massive increase in dewormer purchases from livestock farm and feed stores.

Many stores that sell dewormer have added verbiage to the products that indicate that they are not safe for human consumption and are an unproven cure for COVID-19; other stores have removed ivermectin products from their shelves completely.

[Story Continues Below]

Ivermectin first came on the radar as a possible “cure” for COVID in 2020, when Monash University researchers reported that the drug could kill coronavirus in 48 hours in a lab setting. Though researchers at the Australian institution stressed that further testing was needed to establish the effectiveness and dosage of the drug, the public began seeking out ivermectin.

To date, completed studies on the efficacy of ivermectin are small and not considered of sufficient quality by researchers, though there are several studies currently underway. Reliable evidence doesn't support ivermectin use as a treatment or prophylactically for COVID-19.

Human-grade ivermectin is approved by the FDA for treatment of some parasitic worms and of some external parasites. Animal-grade ivermectin is not approved or dosed for humans and should never be ingested by humans. Side effects of taking livestock-grade ivermectin include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, skin rash, facial or limb swelling, decreased blood pressure, liver problems and neurologic issues like dizziness and seizures.
