Woodbine Meet Officially Over

While attempts were made to reach an agreement with the Ontario government to continue racing despite a mandatory 28-day lockdown of Toronto and its suburbs, Woodbine Entertainment announced Thursday that the track’s 2020 Thoroughbred meet was officially over.

“While I am extremely disappointed we are not able to complete the 2020 Thoroughbred meet, what we achieved this year in face of significant adversity is quite remarkable,” said Jim Lawson, CEO, Woodbine Entertainment. “I have been around horse racing my entire life and I can proudly say that I have never seen the industry come together as it did throughout this year.

“Together, we were able to develop, implement and follow strict COVID-19 Prevention Protocols that allowed us to be the first sport to return to competition in Canada since the shutdowns in March,” said Lawson. “We safely resumed racing in early June and ran almost 100 racing cards, more than 900 races, and the majority of our stakes schedule, including the 161st running of The Queen’s Plate.

“We hope the Government of Ontario has gained a better understanding of our business and appreciation of our safety record in operating live racing without spectators.”

Woodbine Officials Set Thursday 6 P.M. Deadline For Government Talks On Racing Resumption

Woodbine Entertainment provided the following update on the 2020 Thoroughbred meet:

We are continuing our efforts to gain approval from the Government of Ontario to safely complete the 2020 Thoroughbred meet.

Based on the timing of these ongoing efforts, live racing on Saturday, November 28, has been cancelled.

Should Government permit us to safely resume live racing, Sunday, November 29, would be the earliest date. The Race Office would open on Friday, November 27 at 6 a.m. for entries.

Furthermore, if Woodbine Entertainment is permitted to complete the 2020 Thoroughbred meet, it will endeavor to reschedule the cancelled races.

Woodbine Entertainment has committed to make a final decision on the status of the season by 6 p.m. ET on Thursday, November 26. We sincerely appreciate the patience from our community.

As per the Grey (Lockdown) phase of the Government's COVID-19 restrictions which went into effect on Monday, November 23, at 12:01 a.m., the stabling and training of horses is permitted at Woodbine Racetrack, but live horse racing is not.

Since being permitted to race without spectators in early June, Woodbine Entertainment has demonstrated that live racing poses no greater health risk to participants than training. Furthermore, it believes it has clearly demonstrated an ability to safely operate live racing without spectators during that time.

West Point Founder Terry Finley Joins TDN Writers’ Room

Founder, president and CEO of West Point Thoroughbreds Terry Finley joined the TDN Writers’ Room presented by Keeneland Wednesday to discuss an array of industry issues and potential solutions. Calling in via Zoom as the Green Group Guest of the Week, Finley provided his insights on how the game can better attract new customers, whether or not racing’s drug problem is finally going to be cleaned up, the evolution of the owner partnership and much more.

Asked about how his friends who are casual observers of racing view the sport, Finley said he thinks the perception is improving thanks to the industry’s belated but united response to its equine safety and drug crises.

“The people we want to influence and impact are, by and large, reasonable, and all they want is for us to take these things that we’re not proud of as an industry seriously,” he said. “And I think we’ve shown over the last two years that we get it. We got our heads picked up. So I think they appreciate that. People come into the business and give us all a chance to show that we’re doing everything we can to give them a fair shot. I think we’re really starting to catch their attention in a sensible way and I’d like to think that we’re on the way to continuing to grow. I’m optimistic that we’re on the right track. I appreciate that a number of people and organizations have come to the table and compromised. When we’ve done that in the past, good things have happened, and I really think good things are on the way for us if we stay at the table and don’t get mad at each other. We all get frustrated at the pace of change in our business, but it’s all about an evolution.”

The discussion then turned to March’s FBI indictments and how Finley thinks the alleged cheating scandals have affected participation in the sport.

“I really hope that there are some trainers and vets and other people in our industry who haven’t slept in the last eight months because they’re waiting for that phone call,” he said. “We’ve got to take our medicine as an industry, because we let it happen. I think we got beat in seven graded stakes races by those two turkeys, where we finished second or third behind Jason Servis or Jorge Navarro. So when I’ve talked to people in the last eight months about the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act, I’ve said, ‘Listen, they’ve taken money out of my pocket and my partners’ pockets.’ We’ve lost partners in the last eight months because they said the industry has had a long time to clean this up. Now we finally did it and I was very proud of the job that The Jockey Club did. We’re going to keep after this. That’s the only thing I can see that’s going to be effective long term, is to just stay vigilant and try to identify the guys who are taking an edge and cheating.”

Elsewhere on the show, the writers talked about the latest coronavirus-related interruptions to the racing calendar, previewed a big holiday weekend of graded stakes, and in the spirit of Thanksgiving, revealed what they’re thankful for in racing. After Negative COVID Test, Soumillon Headed to Hong Kong For The Winter

Christophe Soumillon is to join the Hong Kong jockey colony for the winter after being granted a license for two months from mid-December.

Soumillon has not ridden since he was forced to stand down from commitments at the Breeders' Cup after failing a mandatory COVID-19 test.

As a result the Belgian, who was not showing any symptoms at the time of the test, had to spend the meeting in isolation while the two horses he was due to ride at Keeneland, Tarnawa and Order Of Australia, went on to capture the Breeders' Cup Turf and Mile respectively. Colin Keane rode Tarnawa and Pierre-Charles Boudot was on Order Of Australia.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club said Soumillon was due to arrive in Hong Kong on Thursday to begin quarantine and will be ready to ride from Dec. 13 – the date of the Longines Hong Kong International Races – until the license expires of Feb. 13.

A statement said: “Jockey Soumillon is scheduled to arrive in Hong Kong on 26th November and will undertake the mandatory 14 days quarantine period under the Compulsory Quarantine of Persons Arriving at Hong Kong from Foreign Places Regulation (Cap. 599E).

“Jockey Soumillon is presently in the UAE. Nasopharyngeal swab (NPS) for 2019 Novel Coronavirus (SARS CoV2) PCR Tests on 12th, 19th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd November have been negative.”

Soumillon has enjoyed previous successful stints in Hong Kong. In March this year he became the most successful jockey in French history when he won his 3,315th race at Compiegne, surpassing the total of wins established by Yves Saint-Martin.
