New York: Cuomo Bets On Mobile Sports Wagering To Help ‘Rebuild From The COVID-19 Crisis’

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is finally supporting online sports wagering in his state, reports the New York Daily News. Sports wagering is legal in several brick-and-mortar locations around New York, but looking at a multi-billion dollar budget deficit after the COVID-19 pandemic ravaged his state, the revenue potential of legalizing online sports wagering looks too good to pass up.

“New York has the potential to be the largest sports wagering market in the United States, and by legalizing online sports betting we aim to keep millions of dollars in tax revenue here at home, which will only strengthen our ability to rebuild from the COVID-19 crisis,” Cuomo said in a statement.

Nearby New Jersey handled a total of $931.6 million in sports wagers in November of 2020, outpacing Nevada and breaking a previous one-month record.

However, rather than tie the sports wagering companies to existing casino licenses, Cuomo hopes to change up the revenue model by allowing the state lottery to be in charge, according to the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle.

“We want to do sports betting the way the state runs the lottery where the state gets the revenues,” Cuomo said in a briefing at the state capital. “Many states have done sports betting but they basically allow casinos to run their own gambling operations. That makes a lot of money for casinos but it makes minimal money for the state.

“And I'm not here to make casinos a lot of money. I'm here to raise funds for the state. So we have a different model for sports betting.”

Oaklawn To Welcome Limited Number Of Fans For 2021 Meet

Pursuant to the Arkansas Department of Health directive, Oaklawn plans to conduct the 2021 live meet with limited spectators. The 57-day season runs Friday, Jan. 22 – Saturday, May 1.

“We've been working on plans covering numerous scenarios and we're happy to announce we will be welcoming back race fans in 2021, albeit on a limited basis,” General Manager Wayne Smith said. “We know that the fans are what make Oaklawn so special, but our main concern is for the safety and well-being of our guests and team members. We appreciate the support we have received from the Arkansas Department of Health in developing this plan. We will be working with them throughout the live season and will adjust as needed.”

In accordance with the guidelines set forth by the Arkansas Department of Health, Oaklawn has submitted a plan to allow a limited number of spectators at the races during the 2021 live race meet highlighted by the following:

· General admission into the Grandstand will not be allowed initially in 2021.

· Entrance into the Grandstand will strictly be for guests with a racing credential and/or reservation for that day's races. Doors will open at 11 am.

· Current seasonal box seat holders and current Oaklawn Jockey Club members may enter the Grandstand with weekly reservations required. Detailed correspondence to be sent separately to these individuals.

· Restaurants inside the Grandstand, following Arkansas Department of Health directives, will be open to the public with weekly reservations required.

· Simulcast will be open Wednesday–Sunday, 11am–8pm to limited capacity with weekly reservations required.

· Social distancing will be enforced.

· All guests and team members will be required to have non-invasive temperature checks as they enter the facility. Anyone presenting a temp at/over 100 degrees Fahrenheit will not be permitted inside the building.

· All guests and team members will be required to wear masks at all times.

· Smoking will not be allowed anywhere inside the facility, including the casino.

Irish Racing to Continue Behind Closed Doors

Irish racing will continue behind closed doors despite coronavirus restrictions being maintained, the Irish Government announced on Wednesday. Only professional, elite sports, horse racing, greyhound racing and approved equestrian events are permitted to continue in this fashion, with no other matches or events allowed at this time. Racing in Ireland resumed on June 8, but owners have only been allowed briefly in September. The ban on UK travel continues until midnight on Friday, Jan. 8, and beginning on Jan. 9, all passengers coming from the UK will be required to possess a negative coronavirus PCR test acquired within 72 hours of traveling. This testing requirement prior to travel will last at least until Jan. 31.

“They will have to present that negative test at the border management unit at an airport or at the ferry terminal,” said Irish Transport Minister Eamon Ryan. “Failure to do so will be subject to either a fine of €2,500 or up to six months imprisonment penal provision, to make sure we get compliance.

“We expect other countries to be doing something similar and we’ll work in co-operation with other countries, and with the European Commission, to monitor and manage how this affects individuals. The cabinet’s agreed provisionally to apply the same measures to other jurisdictions, other red-list countries.

“We will work first of all introduce to the UK provisions, and we will work in the next week with European Commission and others, people involved in the travel industry, in terms of how we broaden and apply the same measures too from other jurisdictions.”
