Fort Erie: Again Pushed Back By COVID, Prince Of Wales Stakes Set For Sept. 14

The 86th running of the Prince of Wales Stakes is set to take place on Tuesday, Sept. 14, first race post time 1:00 p.m. The $400,000 Prince of Wales Stakes is Fort Erie Race Track's signature event, for Canada's finest 3-year-old thoroughbreds running 1 mile and 3/16 on Fort Erie's dirt track.

The race is the second jewel in the Canadian Triple Crown, between the Queen's Plate (scheduled for Aug. 22), and the Breeders' Stakes, both held at Woodbine Racetrack.

For the second year in a row COVID-19 has pushed the race from its traditional date at the end of July to September. It is too early to predict if fans will be permitted to attend, or if COVID-19 will continue to impact attendance.

“This event is our most prestigious race at Fort Erie Race Track, and we are committed to running this historic race for the 86th year,” said Drew Cady, general manager of the Fort Erie Live Racing Consortium. “Although we were able to safely host a racing season last year, it wasn't the same without fans. We hope that in the upcoming season we will once again be able to open our grandstand to our loyal fans, especially for our signature day.”

In 2020, the one-eyed Mighty Heart was the Prince of Wales Stakes victor with jockey Daisuke Fukumoto. Trained by Josie Carroll for Lawrence Cordes, Mighty Heart captured the first two jewels of the crown but was defeated on the turf in the Breeders' Stakes. The last horse to win all three legs of the Canadian Triple Crown was Wando in 2003.

Fort Erie Race Track's 2021 season is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, June 1 at a 4:00 p.m. post time, and will run primarily Mondays and Tuesdays through to October 19.

Park Lane Stables Fundraiser Underway

A crowdfunding effort has been started for Park Lane Stables RDA (Riding for the Disabled), a riding school charity that provides therapy and riding lessons for people with and without disabilities in London. Run by Natalie O'Rourke, the Teddington-based riding school's landlord is not renewing their lease and selling the property. A total of £1 million is needed by Feb. 24 to enable Park Lane to purchase the property and secure their future in the community. The riding school has already raised over £183,000 toward their goal.

Park Lane first drew international notice with #tinyponyatyourwindow during the first London lockdown of the COVID-19 pandemic. Stable volunteers cheered those self-isolating with their pony Annie's Whizz, who eventually would visit over 300 people in their homes, schools, hospitals and care homes. Gluck Professor Assisted With FDA Approval Of COVID-19 Testing Device

Dr. Ted Kalbfleisch, an associate professor at the University of Kentucky in the Gluck Equine Research Center, was a member of a research team that sought emergency FDA approval for a veterinary device to be used to help test for COVID-19.

Veterinarians have had the ability to run real-time assays in the field for years. One of the commonly used devices was developed by MatMaCorp out of Lincoln, NE. The self-contained unit is about the size of a laptop; it can provide results to vets in one to two hours, without requiring the horse to be brought to an equine hospital.

It was quickly realized that this technology, which is familiar to veterinarians, could play a vital role in the fight against COVID-19 in humans. Kalbfleisch and other members of the team were able to get the unit approved by the FDA; the COVID assay it tests for has now been approved for use in CLIA-approved laboratories. Future research will focus on a device that can be utilized in the field for COVID-19 testing.

Joe Talamo Tests Positive For COVID-19, Off Mounts At Oaklawn

Jockey Joe Talamo has been taken off his six mounts on Friday's opening day card at Oaklawn Park, reports the Daily Racing Form, after a 6:00 a.m. rapid test returned a positive result for COVID-19.

Talamo was showing no symptoms, according to his agent Jake Romans, and had tested negative on Monday.

Oaklawn's requirements for outside jockeys include two negative PCR COVID-19 tests within five days, with the second to be taken on race day.

Talamo was named on Moonlight Strike in the $150,000 Smarty Jones Stakes for trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr., and will be replaced by Ramon Vazquez.

Romans said he expects Talamo won't return to the saddle until Feb. 5. Talamo was named on six horses Saturday and six horses Sunday, as well.
