Kentucky Downs Tickets Now Available

Reserved seating for the elite six-day all-turf meeting at Kentucky Downs in September is now available on the track's website. Kentucky Downs will be back to full capacity for live racing at the meet, which runs Sept. 5, 6, 8, 9, 11 and 12, with its most upscale option yet for reserved seating and dining and the return of free general admission.

New to the track's accomodations will be the VIP Chalet, a glass-enclosed, air-conditioned facility with an outdoor terrace providing a spectacular view of the race course and located just yards from the rail. The expansive structure will feature more amenities, high-end cuisine, open bar and betting windows.

The popular Finish Line Pavilion once again will be expanded. The venue will have enhanced food options, dedicated cash bar and betting windows.

COVID-19 safety restrictions limited the 2020 meet to horsemen and their guests. For 2021, free general admission will be back in front of the Mint Gaming Hall and with tailgating at the top of the stretch.

Ticket pricing is tiered according to the day of the week and will be sold in tables of eight only.

Tattersalls July Catalogue Unveiled

The catalogue for the Tattersalls July Sale is now online, the sales company announced on Tuesday. Scheduled for July 7-9, 853 lots, divided between 742 horses and fillies in and out of training and 110 broodmares-13 with foals at foot, will sell at Park Paddocks in Newmarket over the three-day stand. Past graduates of the sale include recent G1 Doomben Cup hero Zaaki (GB) (Leoridesanimaux {Brz}).

Large consignments from owner/breeders Cheveley Park Stud (16), Godolphin (45), Juddmonte Farms (24), Newsells Park Stud, Shadwell Estates (102) and the Royal Studs have all been entered. Since 2019, the dams of 11 Group 1 winners have passed through the sale, among them the dams of Golden Horde (Ire) (Lethal Force {Ire}), Campanelle (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) and Russian Camelot (Ire) (Camelot {GB}).

Mares in foal to established sires like Bated Breath (GB), Dark Angel (Ire), Iffraaj (GB), Invincible Spirit (Ire), Mehmas (Ire), New Approach (Ire), Oasis Dream (GB), Sea The Moon (Ger), and Showcasing (GB) will be offered, just to name a few. Younger stallions are also represented by in foal mares, among them Blue Point (Ire), Churchill (Ire), Cracksman (GB), Earthlight (Ire), Expert Eye (GB), Masar (Ire), Mohaather (GB), Ribchester (Ire), Study Of Man (Ire), and Without Parole (GB).

Some of the top lots are: MSP Dubai Fashion (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) (lot 42) carrying to Blue Point (Ire); Maid's Cap (Ire) (Helmet {Aus}) (lot 122), a half-sister to G1 Melbourne Cup winner Cross Counter (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) in foal to Cracksman (GB); G1 Cheveley Park S. heroine Hooray (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), who was covered by Ulysses (Ire) this March and sells as lot 175; Monzza (GB) (Montjeu {Ire}) (lot 113), a daughter of Group 1 winner Zee Zee Top (GB) (Zafonic) in foal to Bated Breath (GB); the five-time black-type winner and dual Group 2-placed Make A Challenge (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) (lot 716); G2 Mill Reef S. winner Pierre Lapin (Ire) (Cappella Sansevero {GB}) (lot 767); 2021 Listed Woodcote S. heroine Oscula (Ire) (Galileo Gold {GB}) (lot 243); and the Group 3-placed Hala Hala Hala (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) (lot 710).

In 2020, the sale was held over two days with a reduced catalogue of 572 due to COVID-19. A total of 330 horses sold for a gross of 5,940,900gns. The average was 18,003gns and the median was 10,000gns. Topping the sale at 130,000gns apiece were Kalagia (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) and New Jazz (Scat Daddy).

Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said, “The Tattersalls July Sale has an extraordinary record not only for producing high class horses-in-training, but also broodmares of the very highest quality. To date in 2021 mares purchased from the July Sale have produced Group 1 and 2 winners in America, Australia, Dubai and Japan bought for as little as 8,000 guineas and headed by the outstanding Group 1 Australian Oaks winner Hungry Heart (Aus) whose dam Harlech (GB) was a 60,000 guineas purchase from Godolphin in 2016. This year's Tattersalls July catalogue features the usual compelling combination of well bred fillies and in foal mares as well as high class horses in training and significant consignments from Godolphin, Juddmonte Farms and Shadwell Estates, all of which look set to attract plenty of interest from domestic and international buyers alike.”

Fort Erie Adjusts Post Time For Opening Day

Racing at Fort Erie Race Track is set to resume on Tuesday, June 15 with a special post time of 3 p.m. The 2021 live racing calendar will feature race dates, running Mondays and Tuesdays through to October 26. For a second year in a row, racing at the track will begin without spectators due to continuing COVID-19 restrictions.

The 124-year-old border oval will feature racing on Mondays at 1 p.m. as well as twilight racing on Tuesday afternoons commencing at 4 p.m. Enhanced racing COVID protocols are in place to ensure the health and safety of all racing participants.

The opening day card will include two Cup races: The Sprint into Summer and the Summer Solstice Cup. The Sprint into Summer is for colts and geldings (maidens), aged three or older going five furlongs on the dirt. The Summer Solstice is for fillies and mares (maidens), aged three or older going five furlongs on the dirt as well.

“We wanted to start off this season with a strong card and we think the Cup races are a great addition to our opening day,” said Drew Cady, the general manager of the Fort Erie Live Racing Consortium. “Every horseperson has been working hard to prepare their horses for this year's meet and we believe it will be a great season despite delays due to the provincial lockdown.”

The Prince of Wales Stakes is scheduled to take place at the end of summer on Tuesday, September 14. The $400,000 race will feature Canada's finest three-year-old thoroughbreds, running 1 mile and 3/16 on Fort Erie's dirt track. Given the current COVID-19 restrictions it remains uncertain whether fans will be able to attend the 86th running of the second jewel in the OLG Canadian Triple Crown.

Economic Indicators: Derby Return To May Helps Boost Total Wagering Dollars

Equibase, LLC released its fourth monthly report of 2021 on Economic Indicators in Thoroughbred Racing on Friday, June 4. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Equibase has been providing monthly economic indicators advisories. The Advisory is typically disseminated on a quarterly basis to provide key metrics used to measure racing's performance throughout the year.

With the pandemic-instigated racing shut down across much of North America in May of 2020, as well as the rescheduling of the Kentucky Derby, it's no surprise to see the massive 55.84 percent increase in wagering from May of 2020 to May of 2021. The increase in racing is evidenced by the 206 percent increase in races held across the same period.

Average daily wagering, however, was down 51.84 percent from May of 2020 to May of 2021, perhaps indicative of the other options for wagering dollars available as pandemic restrictions continue to decrease across the country.

The more representative year-to-date numbers, from the first five months of 2019 to the first five months of 2021, show total wagering up 12.88 percent while average daily wagering is up 25.55 percent.
