Arqana V.2 Yearling Catalogue Released

The Arqana v.2 Yearling Sale, which took a hiatus in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will return to its home in Deauville directly after the Arqana August Sale. A one-day event, the Aug. 17 sale features 146 colts and fillies geared toward precocity on the racecourse. Current poster girl is 2021 G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches heroine Coeursamba (Fr) (The Wow Signal {Ire}), while earlier distinguished alumni include fellow French 1000 Guineas heroine Teppal (Fr) (Camacho {GB}) and Olmedo (Fr) (Declaration of War), who won the colts' equivalent in 2017.

There are a wide variety of established sires represented, among them Acclamation (GB) (1), Dabirsim (Fr) (8), Dream Ahead (4), Footstepsinthesand (GB) (1), Galiway (GB) (2), Gleneagles (Ire) (1), Holy Roman Emperor (Ire) (1), Kendargent (Fr) (1), Kodi Bear (Ire) (1), Kodiac (GB) (3), Mehmas (Ire) (4), Night Of Thunder (Ire) (1), Oasis Dream (GB) (1), Olympic Glory (Ire) (4), Wootton Bassett (GB) (3) and Zoffany (Ire) (3). Some of the sires with first-crop yearlings set to go through the ring are: Cloth Of Stars (Ire) (2), Expert Eye (GB) (1), Harry Angel (Ire) (1), Havana Grey (GB) (1), Recoletos (Fr) (3), Seahenge (5) and Sioux Nation (5).

Among the lots of interest are: lot 480, a son of Kodiac out of listed winner Beauty of Love (GB) (Elusive City) consigned by Haras d'Etreham; a Dabirsim filly (lot 361) who is a half-sister to stakes winner Eleni (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) from the extended family of Grade I winner Gorella (Fr) (Grape Tree Road {GB}) offered by Haras de Grandcamp; a Haras des Faunes-consigned Kheleyf half-brother (lot 389) to G3 Prix du Bois winner Livachope (Fr) (Goken {Fr}); lot 435, a Recoletos filly who is a half to group winner Absolutly Yes (Fr) (Country Reel) from the draft of Haras de lAumonerie; and a Shalaa (Ire) half-brother (lot 498) to the listed-winning trio of Prince Falcon (Fr) (Shirocco {Ger}), Cashman (Fr) (Soldier of Fortune {Ire}), and Only The Brave (Fr) (Iffraaj {GB}) from Haras de Castillon.

In 2019, the sale grossed €4,080,000 for 110 sold (79%) from 139 offered. The average was €37,091 and the median was €31,000.

Great Community Race Day at Carlisle on July 8

The Great Community Race Day, the brainchild of Carlisle Racecourse non-executive committee member Bruce Jones and his wife Sue who founded OEE, a Carlisle-based engineering company, will be held on Thursday, July 8. Keen to support and contribute towards the local community, the couple decided to sponsor a racing fixture and the concept of the Great Community Race Day was born. Each of the six races on Thursday's card will include the name of one of the following charities that the team at OEE had been personally involved with and felt inclined to support:

BEE Unique – Autism 'Embracing Differences'
Calvert Trust – Challenging disability through outdoor adventure
Carlisle Community Help – Affordable Food Hub
Diff-Ability – Showcasing ability over disability
Every Life Matters – Suicide Prevention
Penny Jones – Animal Hospice

All donations are split equally and passed in full, directly to the charities and can be made here.

“Through the Great Community Race Day, OEE hope to really raise awareness of these local charities and the fantastic work they do,” said Bruce Jones. “OEE would like to thank the charities themselves for their efforts in pulling together the organisation and the team at Carlisle Racecourse for their help and support with all the arrangements and planning.”

Turner Confirmed For Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup

The 20th running of the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup will feature veteran reinswoman Hayley Turner, Ascot announced on Tuesday. Turner, who has won the Alistair Haggis Silver Saddle in 2018 and 2019, is the leading jockey in the history of the event with 297 points from 13 appearances.

Turner said, “I'm excited that the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup is around the corner. It's one of my favourite days of the year. The girls team is always strong and we get lots of supporters which is great. It's going to be fun!”

Slated for Aug. 7, the full make-up of the teams will be revealed in due course, with a different line up than in past years due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Great Britain and Ireland will be split into two teams for the first time since 2011. There will also be a Ladies' team and a Rest of the World team, but the latter will likely be made up of European jockeys only due to ongoing travel restrictions. New for this edition, Each of the 12 riders will sport a different coloured cap. Cerise and black silks will represent the Ladies' team, blue and black are the colours of Great Britain, Ireland will have green and black silks and the Rest of the World team will bear yellow and black silks.

Wagering Down Slightly in June from 2020

Wagering on U.S. races has dipped slightly from $998,331,984 in 2020 to $993,147,243 this season, according to the Thoroughbred Racing Economic Indicators released by Equibase Tuesday. The drop represents a 0.52% change over a year ago. Conversely, wagering rose 0.22% from pre-COVID-19 figures in 2019 when $990,923,384 was wagering during the month of June. In 2021, purses rose 49.17% to $103,624,634 from last year as did race days which increased to 437 from 300 in 2020. Purse figures for the comparable time frame in 2019 were $115,194,83, with 499 race days conducted in June of that year. Also up over last year, 3,413 races were contested in the U.S. (+37.34%) as was number of starts, rising 18.49% to 23,870. Average purse size fell 13.73% to 6.99 last month, while average wagering per race day tumbled 31.71% to $2,272,648. Average purses per race day increased by 2.4% to $237,127.

Generally speaking, the year-to-date figures showed increases, including U.S. wagering rising 24.20% to $6,277, 894,486 and U.S. purses rising 58.85% to $514,950,882. Also showing big gains from 2020 to 2021, U.S. race days rose 44.58% to 1,881 and U.S. race days increasing to 15,792 from 10,906 in 2020. Average field size fell to 7.43 from 8.08, while average wagering per race day also dipped to $3,337,530 from $3,885,109.
