Colonial Downs Cancels Tuesday, Wednesday Cards After McCarthy Tests Positive For COVID-19

Colonial Downs in New Kent, Va. has cancelled both its Tuesday and Wednesday cards this week after leading rider Trevor McCarthy tested positive for COVID-19, reports the Daily Racing Form.

McCarthy experienced symptoms on Saturday, and subsequently took off his mounts on Sunday and Monday. His agent, Scott Silver, reported that the rider got tested Tuesday although he was feeling better, and was later told he was positive.

The track will seek guidance from the Virginia Department of Health on how to proceed.

2020 New Vocations All-Thoroughbred Charity Horse Show And Thoroughbred Incentive Program September Championships Cancelled

New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program and The Jockey Club Thoroughbred Incentive Program (T.I.P.) have jointly agreed to cancel their 2020 hunter/jumper/pleasure horse show that was slated for September 3-6 at the Kentucky Horse Park.

“We are deeply disappointed to cancel the 2020 hunter/jumper horse show, but after ongoing discussions with show management, Kentucky Horse Park event staff, and horse show managers of other events held at the park, the decision to cancel the event was made,” says Sarah Coleman, director of community and public relations for New Vocations. “Multiple factors contributed to this outcome, including the cancellation of other Kentucky Horse Park championship events, the spike in COVID-19 cases throughout the country, various state travel restrictions that would affect many exhibitors, and the inability to ensure that the regional governments would not force the cancellation of the event, potentially once the show was underway.”

The dressage competition, set to run Oct. 3 and 4 at the Kentucky Horse Park, remains on the schedule. Show management will evaluate the event in the coming weeks and will announce a decision on holding the show prior to the opening of entries in late August.

Now in its sixth year, the New Vocations All-Thoroughbred Charity Horse Show raises much-needed funds to enable the program to rehabilitate, retrain, and rehome retiring Thoroughbred and Standardbred racehorses. The T.I.P. Championships celebrate qualified Thoroughbreds in a variety of disciplines. Run concurrently, the shows typically host more than 400 Thoroughbreds at the Kentucky Horse Park each fall.

Sponsors for the New Vocations All-Thoroughbred Charity Horse Show will have several options, including shifting support to a virtual competition in late September. Details of this virtual event are forthcoming.

”Event staff held a lengthy discussion over the last few days and the cancellation was not an easy decision,” says Kristin Werner, senior counsel for The Jockey Club and coordinator of T.I.P. “Ultimately the health and safety of our competitors, officials, and staff far outweigh any event.”

T.I.P. is exploring consolation competition options for early 2021; at this time, the All-Thoroughbred Charity Show and T.I.P. Championships for fall 2021 are expected to run as planned, and horses qualified and declared by the August 3 deadline for the 2020 championships will be eligible to participate in the 2021 events. The Jockey Club’s Virtual Round Table Conference To Highlight Anti-Doping, Integrity, Diversity

The Jockey Club announced Monday that its 68th Annual Round Table Conference on Matters Pertaining to Racing will highlight the importance of reform in medication rules and testing, challenges faced by the Thoroughbred industry, and insights into the claiming system. This year's conference will be held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It will be streamed on The Jockey Club's website at jockeyclub.com on Sunday, August 16, at 10 a.m. EDT and be aired on TVG and Racetrack Television Network's respective platforms. The Jockey Club Chairman Stuart S. Janney III will preside over the conference.

“While we are disappointed that we cannot host an in-person event, we are excited by this year's lineup of speakers and the perspectives they will share with the conference's virtual attendees,” said James L. Gagliano, president and chief operating officer of The Jockey Club.

Gagliano will interview three-time Tour de France winner Greg LeMond about anti-doping and the importance of clean competition. LeMond has been outspoken about performance-enhancing drugs for more than 30 years and has testified before the United States Anti-Doping Agency.

Trainers Mark Casse, John Gosden, and Jessica Harrington will discuss training and competing in different jurisdictions in a panel moderated by Matt Iuliano, executive vice president and executive director of The Jockey Club. Casse was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame this year, while Gosden has trained champions in both the United States and Europe. Harrington, based in Ireland, has trained top horses on the flat and over jumps.

Bob Costas, former sportscaster for NBC Sports and current sportscaster for MLB Network and contributor to CNN, will discuss covering the Triple Crown races and the challenges faced by sports in 2020. Prior to leaving NBC Sports in 2019, Costas co-anchored or hosted its coverage of baseball, football, basketball, hockey, golf, NASCAR, boxing, the Olympics, and horse racing. Costas co-hosted NBC's coverage of the Kentucky Derby from 2001-2018.

Sal Sinatra, the president and general manager of the Maryland Jockey Club, will present on America's system of claiming races and recommend changes that would benefit the sport. Before joining the Maryland Jockey Club, Sinatra spent 15 years at Parx Racing, where he was the vice president of racing and racing secretary.

Katrina Adams, the immediate past president of the United States Tennis Association (USTA), will discuss the importance of diversity. She previously served two terms as the USTA's chairman and president and was an accomplished professional tennis player on the Women's Tennis Association Tour for 12 years. Adams was the first African American, first former professional tennis player, and youngest person ever to serve as USTA president.

Jason Wilson, president and chief operating officer of Equibase, will deliver a report on the activities of The Jockey Club.

The Jockey Club Round Table Conference was first held on July 1, 1953, in The Jockey Club office in New York City. The following year, it was moved to Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Goffs Orby Catalogue Anchored by Sea The Stars Filly

The catalogue for the Goffs Orby Sale, which includes a Sea The Stars (Ire) half-sister to a trio of Group 1 winners out of Theatrical (Ire) mare Green Room (lot 176), is now online. Numerous blue-blooded pedigrees make up the two-day sale, with 474 yearlings set to go under the hammer on Sept. 29-30. Sunday’s G1 Keeneland Phoenix S. winner Lucky Vega (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) is a €175,000 graduate of the Orby Sale.

Ballylinch Stud will offer the 12th foal of the unraced Green Room, whose 2018 Galileo (Ire) filly Espania (Ire) topped the 2019 Goffs Orby Sale at €3 million. Espania is a full-sister to G1 Investec Oaks heroine and €900,000 yearling Forever Together (Ire); €680,000 Goffs Orby yearling and G1 Dubai Fillies Mile heroine Together Forever (Ire); the SP Do You Love Me (Ire)-an €3.2 million purchase and the top lot at the 2018 Goffs Orby Sale; and a half-sister to G1 Prix Jean Prat hero and sire Lord Shanakill (Speightstown). Green Room has already produced the €1.1 million Goffs Orby graduate Signe (Ire) to the cover of Sea The Stars.

Perennial champion sire Galileo (Ire) is represented by eight yearlings, including; The Castlebridge Consignment’s lot 237, a son of GI E. P. A single yearling by Dubawi is part of the Staffordstown draft as lot 17, a colt out of French MSW All At Sea (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), whose second dam is German Champion Older Mare Albanova (GB) (Alzao); while among Dark Angel’s 20 yearlings is the second foal out of the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas heroine Jet Setting (Ire) (lot 211) from Baroda Stud. Abbeville Stud brings a son of Exceed And Excel (Aus) (lot 92) out of Italian Group 3 winner Cottonmouth (Ire) (Noverre), who has already foaled Italian Champion Older Horse and MG1SW Dylan Mouth (Ire) (Dylan Thomas {Ire}). Moonlight Cloud (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire})’s Frankel (GB) half-brother is offered by Baroda Stud as lot 458, and they are also the consignor of note for a Kingman (GB) half-brother to 2020 G1 Henkel Preis de Diana heroine Miss Yoda (Ger) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) (lot 291). Camas Park Stud’s draft contains a full-brother to European champion and young sire Ten Sovereigns (Ire) (No Nay Never) (lot 388). In 2019, the Goffs Orby Sale grosses ¥42,927,500 for 364 sold of 429 offered. The average was €117,933 and the median was €65,000. Topping proceedings over the two-day stand was the aforementioned Espania (Ire), who sold for €3 million to M V Magnier/Westerberg from the draft of Ballylinch Stud. Allthough unraced, holds an entry for the Sept. 13 G1 Moyglare Stud S.

A full preview of the Orby Sale will be conducted after the Aug. 12-13 Goffs Land Rover Sale at Kildare Paddocks with online bidding and strict social distancing protocols in place. The Land Rover Sale is the first sale in Ireland since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and Goffs is working closely with Horse Racing Ireland to ensure that the protocols in place mirror those on Irish racecourses. Goffs is committed to delivering the best marketplace possible given the current situation, with further announcements in connection to the Orby Sale and Oct. 29-30 Sportsman’s Sale in the future.

However, as we have demonstrated in recent months, Arqana, Goffs and Tattersalls will consider every option to serve the industry as best we are able, putting our usual competitive natures to one side for the greater good. To that end I have agreed with Edmond Mahony at Tattersalls that we will meet following the forthcoming store sales to discuss the autumn sales programmes of Goffs and Tattersalls, and the options that exist.

“With specific reference to the Orby and Sportsman’s Sales we will continue to monitor the situation and look at any and all options as matters evolve but we would reiterate that the modern day Goffs was set up to provide a world class sales facility in Ireland specifically for the Irish breeder. That said at the same time we have a superb sales complex in the UK so we have options to serve the industry on both sides of The Irish Sea and will make a timely decision in the best interests of all our valued vendors when we have weighed up the strengths and weaknesses of each alternative against the backdrop of a situation that is literally changing by the day. However we feel it would be imprudent to rush in to any finite decisions beyond this week at this stage and we would ask for calm heads together with the continued support of our loyal clients as by working together we can deliver the best results for the world class Irish horses so sought after around the world.”
