RCA Will Not Mandate Covid Passes

Covid passports will not be mandated at British courses by the Racecourse Association (RCA), which has no plans to implement a policy similar to Chelmsford's which requires covid passes. At Chelmsford City, attendees will be required to show a photo ID and a covid pass to attend meetings for the remainder of the year. Wales requires proof of vaccination status or a negative test if crowds exceed a certain level, and Scotland is set to introduce a similar rule.

A statement from the Racecourse Association was released on Monday and it read, “Further to recent speculation, the RCA can confirm that there are currently no plans to introduce mandatory Covid certification at British racecourses other than in devolved nations where venues are already required to facilitate the initiative when attendances reach a certain limit.

“We remain in close contact with the appropriate departments across national governments to ensure all British racecourses are at the forefront of relevant information should the situation change.

“In the interim, the RCA will continue to follow the advice given by national governments and provide guidance to our member racecourses, allowing them to safely welcome spectators and participants.”

Study: Horses Not Responsible For COVID-19 Transmission

New research shows that horses and other livestock most likely did not play a role in the transmission of COVID-19. Scientists at Colorado State University and the University of Queensland in Australia, lead by Dr. Angela Bosco-Lauth, infected alpacas, cattle, goats, one horse, rabbits and sheep with the COVID-19 virus intranasally.

None of the animals used in the study had the virus detectable in their saliva, through nasal secretions, or through their feces throughout the study period. However, one calf, two goats, and a rabbit did show viral RNA in nasal and oral swabs, which suggests they may be minimally permissive to infection.

None of the animals displayed clinical signs of infection or had a fever after being infected with COVID-19.

The study team concluded that domestic livestock are unlikely to contribute to the spread of COVID-19 and also that they are unlikely to be involved in reverse zoonosis, or the infection of animals by humans.

Woodbine Closes Turf Racing Season With Average Field Sizes Of 9.5

Woodbine Racetrack recently wrapped up turf racing for the 2021 season, posting steady numbers over a total of 241 races contested over its two turf courses.

Races run on the world renowned E.P. Taylor Turf Course generated an average handle of $577,895 per-race, with an average field size of 9.5. The Inner-Turf Course, which opened in June of 2019, held 99 races, with an average handle of $459,637 and field size 8.8.

A total of 26 stakes races were run on the E.P. Taylor, including six Grade 1 events, while eight stakes were run on the Inner Turf.

“Despite our season being delayed by two months due to the pandemic, we had another terrific year of turf racing at Woodbine Racetrack,” said Jim Lawson, CEO, Woodbine Entertainment. “We are really looking forward to starting our 2022 season on time and running the most turf races in a single season in our history. Woodbine is a premier turf destination in North America and the best is yet to come.”

In 2019, Woodbine ran 363 turf races on the E.P. Taylor Turf Course and the Inner Turf Course combined, the most turf races its ever run in a single meet.

Highlights of turf racing in 2021 includes the Ricoh Woodbine Mile, won by Town Cruise, and the return of the Pattison Canadian International, captured by Walton Street (GB), were held on September 18 as part of Woodbine's Turf Festival weekend. The pair of Grade 1 turf races had $2.2 million and $1.7 million wagered, respectively, to help push a Woodbine Mile card record handle of $13.8 million.

Woodbine played host to three Breeders' Cup Challenge Series “Win and You're In” races (Ricoh Woodbine Mile, Summer, Natalma) in 2021, with all three contested on the E.P. Taylor Turf Course.

The final turf race for the 2021 meet was contested on October 28 and the Woodbine Racing Surfaces has immediately begun preparing the course for 2022.

Godolphin Pair Top Tattersalls Ascot November Sale

Throne Hall (GB) (Kingman {GB}) and Strozzi (Ger) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), both consigned by Godolphin, brought identical bids of £50,000 to share joint-topper honours during Thursday's Tattersalls Ascot November Sale. Held at Ascot racecourse for the first time since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the sale grossed a record £603,500 for 77 sold (83%). The average was £7,838 and the median was £4,600.

Blandford Bloodstock purchased lot 66, Throne Hall. A dual winner, the 4-year-old gelding is from the family of globetrotting Group 1 winner Flintshire (GB) (Dansili {GB}) and European champion Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}). He will be sent to trainer Archie Watson.

Just one lot earlier, Richard Venn Bloodstock was in action for Strozzi (lot 65). A son of dual German listed-placed Soprana (Ger) (Cadeaux Genereux {GB}), the bay colt won at Chepstow over seven furlongs in June. He will continue his racing career in the Middle East.

Another Godolphin-consigned horse, the gelding Komachi (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) (lot 61) brought £42,000 from W. Clarken and D. Arnold. The winning 3-year-old gelding counts Irish champion Flagbird (Nureyev) as his third dam.
