Oxbow’s County Final Scores in Tyro

County Final topped last month’s Fasig-Tipton July Horses of Racing Age sale at $475,0000 last month, and began chipping away at that investment first time for the new connections here. A four-length debut winner turf sprinting for trainer John Ennis at Churchill June 5, the grey was second in the GIII Bashford Manor S. on the Louisville dirt 22 days later behind soon-to-be stablemate Cazadero (Street Sense). While Cazadero could only manage fifth in Friday’s GII Saratoga Special S., fellow Steve Asmussen pupil Jackie’s Warrior (Maclean’s Music) impressed in that event. With G2 Norfolk S. runner-up Golden Pal (Uncle Mo) and well-regarded Fauci (Malibu Moon) scratched when the race came off the grass, County Final’s main challenge appeared likely to come from those two’s stablemate Spicy Marg, an unraced Wesley Ward-trained filly. Spicy Marg blasted out of the gate, and quickly cleared as County Final was ridden along to keep up. The favorite came under the whip around the bend as the frontrunner floated him wide at the top of the stretch, but County Final was undeterred and leveled off nicely in the lane to cruise by his tiring foe in hand. The winner’s dam was a stakes winner going both long and short on the dirt while trained by Asmussen. She produced a Keen Ice filly in 2019 and a Will Take Charge colt this term before being bred back to Ransom the Moon.

Graded-Placed Juvenile County Final Tops Modified Fasig-Tipton July Horses Of Racing Age Sale

Live auction action returned to Kentucky on July 13 with a robust renewal of the Fasig-Tipton July Horses of Racing Age sale at Newtown Paddocks in Lexington.

Conducted as an open sale for the first time, the sale was modified to serve an industry that has been balancing limited racing and sales opportunities since March. All horses offered were on the sales grounds, and buyers had the option to bid in-person, on the phone, or via the new online auction tool.

Graded stakes-placed juvenile County Final topped the sale when sold for $475,000 to West Point Thoroughbreds, L.E.B., agent.

The gray or roan colt by Preakness Stakes winner Oxbow was consigned as Hip 166 by John Ennis Training, agent. The sale-topper broke his maiden on debut going 5 1/2 furlongs on the Churchill Downs turf on June 5, wiring a field of straight maidens to win by four lengths. He followed up that effort with a second-place finish in the Grade 3 Bashford Manor Stakes on June 27, this time going six furlongs on the Churchill Downs main track.

County Final earned $65,000 in his first two starts for owner-train John Ennis and owners Hayden Noriega, and 47 Roses LLC. The colt is a half-brother to two other winners out of the multiple stakes winning Tapit mare Tapajo, from the immediate family of Grade 1 winner Currency Swap.

Per Capita, a winning 4-year-old colt by Tapit, sold for $325,000 to Red Oak Stable, agent for Rick Sacco, to become the sale's second-most expensive offering.

Offered as Hip 85 by Gainesway, agent, Per Capita was a winner last out, breaking his maiden going a mile on the dirt at Churchill Downs on May 24. The colt won once in four starts for owners Peter M. Brant and Gainesway Stable and trainer Chad Brown, earning $65,150.

Per Capita is out of the graded stakes winning Orientate mare Successful Outlook, making him a half-brother to Grade 1 winner Sweet Lulu and a full brother to Grade 2 winner Anchor Down and Grade 3 winner Iron Fist.

The session's top filly came in the form of recent G3 Indiana Oaks runner-up Impeccable Style, who was purchased for $275,000 by Bradley Thoroughbreds, agent.

The 3-year-old winning daughter of Uncle Mo was offered as Hip 53 by Gainesway. The dark bay or brown filly broke her maiden on her second try last year at two at Churchill Downs and was most recently second in the Indiana Oaks on July 8 at Indiana Grand. Impeccable Style has won or placed in four of six career starts to date for Gainesway Stable, Catalyst Stable, Paul McInnis, Patty Slevin, and Magdalena Racing and trainer Kenny McPeek, with earnings of $134,912.

Overall, 81 horses changed hands for a total of $5,072,000. The average was $62,617 and the median was $30,000.

Graded-Placed 2-Year-Old County Final Leads Latest Fasig-Tipton July Horses Of Racing Age Entries

Fasig-Tipton has cataloged an additional 11 entries to its July Horses of Racing Age Sale, increasing the size of the catalog to 176 entries. The live auction will be conducted with horses, buyers, and sellers in attendance.

These new entries are cataloged as Hips 166-176, and may now be viewed online. This latest group of entries includes:

County Final (Hip 166): Versatile 2-year-old colt captured his debut on turf at Churchill Downs on June 5, going wire-to-wire to win by an easy four lengths. He stepped up in class and switched to Churchill's dirt surface for his second start in the Grade 3 Bashford Manor Stakes on June 27. Carving out swift fractions to lead most of the way, he finished a strong second to undefeated Cazadero, one of the nation's leading 2-year-olds. He is out of Tapajo, a stakes winning daughter of Tapit that is a 100 percent winner-producer. County Final is consigned by John Ennis Training, agent.

Salow (Hip 172): Three-year-old son of Distorted Humor captured his career debut in eye-catching fashion on July 3 at Gulfstream Park. Going one mile on turf, he came impressively from off the pace to win by 2 3/4 lengths in a swift final time of 1:34 2/5. His dam, Eve Giselle, was a graded stakes winner and multiple stakes winner of nearly $300,000. She is a 100 percent winner-producer, including stakes placed I'm Patriotic. Salow is consigned by ELiTE, agent.

These entries may also be viewed in the sale's enhanced online catalog, which features pedigrees, race videos, statistical links, Ragozin “sheet” numbers, and real-time Daily Racing Form and Thoromanager past performances.

Print catalogs will be available on-site at Fasig-Tipton by Friday, July 10.

‘Really Impressive’ Juvenile Winner County Final Switches From Turf To Dirt For Bashford Manor

John Ennis, Hayden Noriega and 47 Roses' eye-catching debut winner County Final will switch surfaces from turf to dirt in search of graded stakes glory in Saturday's $100,000 Bashford Manor presented by TwinSpires.com (Grade III), a six furlong-event for 2-year-olds at Churchill Downs.

“This horse should absolutely love the slight stretch out in distance,” said jockey James Graham, who was aboard for the colt's four-length maiden victory June 5. “We opened up by three-to-four lengths mid-stretch on everyone but what was really impressive was how he extended his stride past the wire. He's a bigger colt with a really long stride. He's got a great mind, too, which is always nice for a younger horse.”

The six-furlong Bashford Manor will go as Race 8 of 11 with a post time of 4:43 p.m. (all times Eastern). The race shares the spotlight on Saturday with the $500,000 Stephen Foster presented by Coca-Cola (GII), $200,000 Fleur de Lis presented by Coca-Cola (GII) and $100,000 Regret presented by TwinSpires.com (GIII). First post is 1 p.m.

County Final, trained by Ennis, has been based at the Thoroughbred Training Center in Lexington. The $9,500 Keeneland September Yearling buy by Oxbow drew the outside post No. 7 in the Bashford Manor.

“I really like that we'll be the last horse to load in the gate,” Graham said. “If he breaks well, we'll be able to see what the other horses to our inside are doing in the early stages. He has speed and he trains well on the dirt. So, the switch from the turf to the dirt should be no problem either.”
