2nd-TOK, ¥9,680,000 ($85k), Maiden, 2yo, 1600mT
WORLD CONNECTOR (c, 2, Connect–Wild Hoots, by Unbridled's Song) was made the 8-5 favorite for a 1600-meter newcomers' event over the local dirt track on debut Oct. 9, but sat a three-wide trip from a high draw and settled for a clear second (see below, SC 16). The half-brother to SW & GISP Savings Account (Medaglia d'Oro), whose dam is a full-sister to GISW Buddha, switches to the turf for this second go and has the services of Christophe Lemaire. The most expensive of 29 of his first-crop sire (by Curlin)'s weanlings to sell in 2019 when hammering for $250K at Keeneland November, World Connector was bought back for $285K at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga last summer, but fetched $410K at this year's FTFMAR sale. B-Dell Ridge Farm LLC (KY)

3rd-NII, ¥14,360,000 ($126k), Allowance, 3yo/up, 1800m
COSMIC MIND (c, 3, Into Mischief–Mystical Star, by Ghostzapper) turned in a remarkable performance on Nakayama debut Jan. 17, overcoming a world of trouble to score narrowly. Though off the board in three subsequent starts, he wasn't beaten far and makes his first start since April in this spot. A $280K KEESEP acquisition, the late April foal is out of a versatile dam who was a Grade II winner and Grade I-placed on the grass and runner-up in an all-weather renewal of the GI Juddmonte Spinster S. in 2012. Notable US-Bred & -Sired Runners in Japan: Apr. 18, 2021

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this Sunday running at Hanshin, Niigata and Nakayama Racecourses, the last of which stages the first colts' Classic of 2021, the G1 Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2000 Guineas) over the metric 10 furlongs:

Sunday, April 18, 2021
1st-NII, ¥9,680,000 ($89k), Maiden, 3yo, 1800m
ALIENOR (JPN) (f, 3, Nyquist–Land Over Sea, by Bellamy Road), a well-beaten 12th in a 1600-meter newcomers' event on the turf at Tokyo last November, switches to the dirt for this second appearance and is bred top and bottom to appreciate the change. From her GI Kentucky Derby-winning sire's first crop, the January foal is out of Paul Reddam's 2016 GII Fair Grounds Oaks winner and GI Longines Kentucky Oaks runner-up who was acquired for $1.3 million with this filly in utero at Fasig-Tipton November in 2017. Land Over Sea is a half-sister to the durable MGSW & GISP War Story (Northern Afleet). B-Shadai Farm

5th-HSN, ¥13,830,000 ($127k), Allowance, 3yo, 1800m
TOP THE BILL (JPN) (f, 3, American Pharoah–Top Decile, by Congrats) has a record of 1-1-1 from four starts on the dirt, having broken her maiden from a near impossible position going this distance two back at Chukyo Jan. 11 (see below, gate 16) ahead of a third when trying winners for the first time over that track and trip 13 days hence. The chestnut is the first foal from her dam, runner-up in the 2014 GI Darley Alcibiades S. and a tough-trip second in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. Top Decile was sold for $950K with this filly in utero at Keeneland November in 2017. B-Shadai Farm

5th-NKY, ¥13,830,000 ($127k), Allowance, 3yo, 1800m
COSMIC MIND (c, 3, Into Mischief–Mystical Star, by Ghostzapper) opened his account in spectacular fashion, overcoming all sorts of trouble to graduate narrowly over this course and trip Jan. 17 (video, gate 4) and has not disgraced in two runs since, finishing fifth and fourth, respectively, while not beaten far. A $280K KEESEP yearling, the bay is out of the versatile Mystical Star, a Grade II winner on the grass and runner-up in a Polytrack renewal of the GI Juddmonte Spinster S. Remarkably, this colt's breeder is also represented in the same by Bourbon Highball (Curlin), who hails from the same crop of about 18 horses, according to Candy Meadows's Matt Lyons. VALKYRJA (JPN) (f, 4, Tapit–Peace and War, by War Front) makes her first appearance in 13 months, having broken her maiden in her lone trip to the post going this trip at Kyoto last February. The bay is the first foal from her dam, upset winner of the 2014 GI Darley Alcibiades S., who was sold with this filly in utero for $1.45 million at the 2016 Keeneland November Sale. Peace and War is a half-sister to the dam of 2020 GIII Pat Day Mile hero Rushie (Liam's Map). B-Northern Racing

10th-CKO, ¥34,600,000 ($319k), Allowance, 3yo, 1400m
SATONO MUSTANG (c, 3, Mineshaft–Mare and Cher, by Old Fashioned), a half-brother to SW Cruise and Danze (Danza), carries a two-race winning streak into this test, including a very game allowance score at Tokyo Feb. 7 (see below, gate 6). The $25K KEESEP yearling turned $150K OBS March breezer, whose dam is a half-sister to SW & GSP Fight On (Into Mischief), bypassed the Listed Hyacinth S. Feb. 21 and looks to continue his winning ways here. B-Haymarket Farm LLC (KY)

IRISH SENSE (c, 3, Quality Road–Miss Singhsix {Ire}, by Singspiel {Ire}), a $125K KEESEP acquisition, just missed on Kyoto debut last Nov. 1 and makes his first start since graduating narrowly going this distance at Hanshin Dec. 13 (see below, gate 10). The $280K KEESEP purchase is one of two winners from as many to race for his dam, winner of the GII New York S. and third in the GI Flower Bowl Invitational S. on the grass and second in a Polytrack renewal of the GI Juddmonte Spinster S. Notable US-Bred Runners in Japan: Jan. 16 & 17, 2021

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Chukyo and Nakayama Racecourses:

Saturday, January 16, 2021
7th-CKO, ¥14,360,000 ($138k), Allowance, 4yo/up, 1200m
LA LA CHRYSAOR (h, 5, Speightstown–Lindy, by War Front) made a huge impression when graduating by 10 1/2 lengths on debut as the 6-5 favorite just over two years ago (video, gate 5), but has been missing since a third in his first attempt versus winners the following April. A $325K Keeneland September purchase in 2017, the bay is out of a stakes-placed dam who was led out unsold on a bid of $320K with this foal in utero at KEENOV in 2015. La La Chrysaor’s now juvenile half-brother Mean Jakey (Violence) fetched $340K at KEESEP last fall. B-Ranjan Racing Inc (KY)

Sunday, January 17, 2021
4th-CKO, ¥11,400,000 ($110k), Newcomers, 3yo, 1800m
SEOJOON (c, 3, Liam’sMap–Tiz Champ, by Tiznow) is the second foal to make the races from his dam, a daughter of Salt Champ (Arg) (Salt Lake), a three-time Group 1 winner at home and victorious in the GI Santa Monica H. in this country. Tiz Champ is a half-sister to Champ Pegasus (Fusaichi Pegasus), winner of the GI Clement L. Hirsch Memorial Turf Championship and second to Dangerous Midge (Lion Heart) in the 2010 GI Breeders’ Cup Turf at Churchill Downs. Seojoon was hammered down for $110K at KEESEP. B-Arturo Vargas (KY)

4th-NKY, ¥11,400,000 ($110k), Newcomers, 3yo, 1800m
COSMIC MIND (c, 3, Into Mischief–Mystical Star, by Ghostzapper), a $280K KEESEP acquisition, is out of Cheyenne Stables’ wire-to-wire winner of the grassy GII New York S. in 2012 who also gained Grade I black-type when runner-up in that year’s Juddmonte Spinster S. over the Keeneland Polytrack. The colt’s third dam Degenerate Gal (Degenerate) was a three-time GSW around two turns and was placed in the GI Shuvee H. B-Candy Meadows LLC (KY)

ERIE TESORO (f, 3, California Chrome-Celtic Chant, by Songandaprayer) cost $130K as a KEENOV weanling in 2018 before improving into a $235K KEESEP yearling the following year. Her stakes-winning dam has already been responsible for the Grade III-placed Irish Mischief (Into Mischief), while the deeper female family includes MGISW Vicar (Wild Again) and his stakes-winning half-sister Sheepscot (Easy Goer), the dam of 2007 G1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains hero Astronomer Royal (Danzig) and U.S. GSW Navesink River (Unbridled). B-Clarkland Farm LLC (KY)

11th-NKY, Keisei Hai-G3, ¥72,000,000 ($694k), 3yo, 2000mT
BLACK LOTUS (c, 3, American Pharoah–Arravale, by Arch) made the most of his career debut–on the dirt, somewhat surprisingly–scoring narrowly over the metric nine furlongs at this venue Dec. 20 (see below, SC 12). The $200K KEESEP graduate is beautifully bred for the surface switch, as his dam was Canada’s Horse of the Year and champion grass mare and has produced GII Natalma S. third-place finisher Nancy O (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}). American Pharoah’s GI QE II Challenge Cup winner and GI Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Third Harvey’s Lil Goil has a second dam by Arch. Merriebelle Stable acquired Arravale for $490K in foal to Animal Kingdom at KEENOV in 2016. B-Merriebelle Stable LLC (KY)
