UK Staff Declaration Process Changed

The process for how trainers declare staff to attend the racecourse using Racing Admin will change on Sept. 18, the British Horseracing Authority announced on Monday. There will be a new Declare Staff section on Racing admin which will include the staffmember’s:

  • Health status (green / amber / red)
  • Questionnaire status for that fixture (sent / completed / not sent)
  • Questionnaire Last Completed date (to help calculate a 7-day validity)

Also, the new area will give the ability to declare staff immediately after making a declaration to run, up until 1 p.m. on the day of declaration. The health screening questionnaires will be sent within 30 minutes of staff declarations (if less than 48 hours before the fixture.) There will be a live webinar at 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 16 to explain the new features. For more information and to access the webinar info, please go to www.britishhorseracing.com.

Danny Sheehy Tests Positive for COVID

Irish jockey Danny Sheehy is now the third rider to test positive for COVID-19. His brother Mikey tested positive this past weekend. Mikey is a housemate of Shane Crosse, who was positive for the virus on Friday.

“Following precautionary tests taken over the weekend, jockey Danny Sheehy has returned a positive test for COVID-19,” Horse Racing Ireland said in a statement. “He was asymptomatic prior to the test and is now self-isolating. Contact tracing continues.

“All other tests taken over the weekend, including contact tracing and those at the yard of Joseph O’Brien, returned negative.”

Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board Senior Medical Officer Dr. Jennifer Pugh added, “We are liaising with public health in assisting them with contact tracing and all of their requirements. Public health are satisfied with all approaches we have taken and we will continue to be in regular communication.”

Baffert: Authentic, Thousand Words Both On Target For Preakness

Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert said Sunday that Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Authentic and Thousand Words are on course for the 145th Preakness Stakes (G1) Saturday, Oct. 3 at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Md.

Authentic became Baffert's record-tying sixth Derby winner on Sept. 5 with a 1 1/4-length victory over Belmont Stakes (G1) winner Tiz the Law, the 7-10 favorite. Thousand Words was scratched from the Derby when he acted up and flipped while being saddled in the paddock. Both colts are at Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas' barn at Churchill Downs and are galloping daily. Baffert has not scheduled a date for when the colts will have their next timed works, but said he expected those breezes would happen at the end of this week.

Baffert said that Azul Coast, who earned a berth in the Preakness with a victory in El Camino Real Derby on Feb. 15, is not being considered for the race.

Even though he had won four of five career starts, Authentic, co-owned by Spendthrift Farm, MyRaceHorse Stable, Madaket Stables and Starlight Racing was the 8-1 third choice in the Derby wagering. He recovered from an awkward start from the outside post of the 15-horse field to make the front after a quarter mile and never gave up the lead. Tiz the Law was within a head of Authentic after a mile, but could not get past the son of Into Mischief. Authentic's time of 2:00.61 was the seventh-fastest in Derby history.

“He came out very well, very well,” Baffert said from the Keeneland September yearling sale in Lexington, Ky. “He's ready to go. We would have been ready to go in two weeks.”

For decades the Preakness has been run two weeks after the Derby. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Triple Crown schedule was dramatically changed this year and the Preakness is the third stop in the series, a month after the Derby.

Baffert's longtime assistant Jimmy Barnes was reaching under Thousand Words to tighten the saddle when the Pioneerof the Nile colt co-owned by the Albaugh Family Stables and Spendthrift Farm reared and fell to the ground.

“Thousand Words, he's fine,” Baffert said. “When he went up he sort of lost his footing and was on his side. He was OK and was checked out. He's doing well.”

Barnes was injured in the incident, though, and Baffert said nine screws and a plate were required to repair his damaged right wrist. Following the Derby, Baffert landed on the ground as he moved to avoid Authentic's reaction to the blanket of roses being placed on his back. Baffert, 67, was not injured.

“The human connections, we were the worst for wear,” Baffert said.

Baffert is the leading trainer in Triple Crown history with 16 victories. He is tied for the most wins in the Preakness, seven, with the 19th century trainer R. Wyndham Walden.

Queen’s Plate Generates Third-Highest Handle in History

Saturday’s live program at Woodbine, featuring the coronavirus-delayed Queen’s Plate, generated betting turnover of $14,532,678, nearly $3.5 million of that on the first leg of the Canadian Triple Crown alone. The handle ranks as the third-highest in the history of the race.

“While this year’s Queen’s Plate might be remembered for not having fans in the stands, I would much rather it be remembered for the collective efforts of so many people that allowed this race to be run and its storied history continued to be written,” said Jim Lawson, CEO, Woodbine Entertainment. “On behalf of Woodbine, a sincere thank you to our staff, partners and the entire horse racing community for everything they did make this day possible. Over the past several months, we have certainly proved that we are stronger together and this historic handle is surely representative of that.”

Wagering wrapped up on this year’s Plate program with a Jackpot Hi-5 mandatory payout in the 13th race finale. The Jackpot Hi-5 pool included a carryover of $211,780.52, with $773,571 in new money wagered. With 4-1 favourite Guestimation holding off 9-2 second choice Giant Critic in a win photo and leading a 6-4-13-12-11 top five finish order, winning horseplayers received a return of $10,080.19 for a 20-cent ticket.

The Queen’s Plate undercard also featured the GII Canadian S., won in an upset by Rideforthecause (Candy Ride {Arg}), the Bison City S., the Ruling Angel S. and the King Corrie S.
