UK Spectator Guidelines Released by BHA

A limited number of spectators will be allowed on certain English racecourses as of Dec. 2, the British Horseracing Authority announced. Spectators are permitted in some areas of England, according to the latest guidelines revealed by the UK government. Owners are able to attend fixtures across all three tiers, while regular spectators are allowed only in Tiers 1 and 2. Spectators and owners are both permitted in the Amber Zone (formerly the Owner Zone) at racecourses, but there will be specific areas reserved for owners only. Pre-registration is essential for all, and owners will receive an automatic email with details of how to register once their horse is entered to run. In addition, the owner’s email will contain information regarding badges available, food and beverage options and any screening arrangements in place at that fixture. The racecourses have produced a briefing document which outlines arrangements for owners under the tier system. Owners are also responsible for following the Owners’ Code. There is an updated version of the Owner Protocols to reflect the new tier system, as well.

The Racecourse Owners Association (ROA), Racecourse Association (RCA) and British Horseracing Authority (BHA) are continuing to work with racecourses to ensure that the raceday is as enjoyable and rewarding as possible, as the tier system enables an easing of restrictions guarding against the coronavirus. Arqana Publishes COVID Protocols

Arqana has released its COVID-19 protocols for its December Breeding Stock Sale, which runs Dec. 5 through 8 in Deauville. Access to the sales complex is restricted to vendors, buyers and sales personnel, and anyone seeking access must fill out a request for access form. Those traveling from abroad will receive a travel authorisation from Arqana to permit them to clear controls.

Face masks must be worn at all times on the sales complex-snoods and scarves do not qualify. The auction will take place in the indoor arena, with a maximum capacity of 100 bidders. There will be dedicated entrances for bidders to enter and exit the arena. Bidding zones will be signposted inside and outside the pavilion. Bidding will also be available over the phone and online.

Food will not be sold on the sales grounds and must be pre-ordered on the request for access form.

Casse Earns 12th Woodbine Training Title

Mark Casse topped the Woodbine trainers leaderboard for the 12th time with 93 wins during the abbreviated 2020 meet. Beginning June 6, the meet was originally scheduled to conclude Dec. 13, but was forced to end early Nov. 22 due to a government-mandated lockdown for the region of Ontario due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The jockeys’ race went right down to the wire with Rafael Hernandez edging out Justin Stein. It was the first riding title at Woodbine for Hernandez, who racked up 129 wins.

Barber was the leading money-winning owner of the meet with more than $1.56 million in purses followed by Stronach Stables ($1.24 million) and Live Oak Plantation ($1.14 million). Meanwhile, Bruno Schickedanz topped the win column with 35 successful starters, followed by Barber’s 17 victories.

Woodbine Meet Officially Over

While attempts were made to reach an agreement with the Ontario government to continue racing despite a mandatory 28-day lockdown of Toronto and its suburbs, Woodbine Entertainment announced Thursday that the track’s 2020 Thoroughbred meet was officially over.

“While I am extremely disappointed we are not able to complete the 2020 Thoroughbred meet, what we achieved this year in face of significant adversity is quite remarkable,” said Jim Lawson, CEO, Woodbine Entertainment. “I have been around horse racing my entire life and I can proudly say that I have never seen the industry come together as it did throughout this year.

“Together, we were able to develop, implement and follow strict COVID-19 Prevention Protocols that allowed us to be the first sport to return to competition in Canada since the shutdowns in March,” said Lawson. “We safely resumed racing in early June and ran almost 100 racing cards, more than 900 races, and the majority of our stakes schedule, including the 161st running of The Queen’s Plate.

“We hope the Government of Ontario has gained a better understanding of our business and appreciation of our safety record in operating live racing without spectators.”
