TERF Awards $12,000 to Cornell’s Vet Program

The Thoroughbred Education and Research Foundation (TERF) has awarded $12,000 to Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. In alignment with a mission to support and promote equine education by supporting organizations that are educating the public on the proper care of horses, TERF's scholarship recipients are Brooke Schiltz and Kaitlin Dullea. Schiltz hopes to go into racetrack practice in Florida and Dullea hopes to pursue a surgical residency.

“The Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine is very grateful for the support TERF is providing to its students, especially those planning to pursue equine medicine,” said Sheila Reakes, Director of Annual Giving at Cornell. “The College is embarking on a concerted effort to help students lower their debt-to-salary ratio, and generous scholarships like these can make a big difference in the lives of new graduates.”

TERF Awards Educational Grants

The Thoroughbred Education and Research Foundation has awarded $65,000 in grants to nine organizations. In 2022, to fund scholarships and education, $10,000 was awarded to the Belmont Child Care Association, Inc., $5,000 to Amplify Horse Racing, $12,000 to Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, $10,000 to the Maryland Horse Foundation, $4,000 to the MidAtlantic Horse Rescue, $5,000 to the Retired Race Horse Project, $4,000 to the TAKE2 Second Career Thoroughbred Program, $10,000 to the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, and $5,000 to Wilson College.

TERF primarily aims to support students in pursuit of education in Equine Medicine and to fund research efforts which better the life of the Thoroughbred horse. Its grants reflect the values set forth by founders Herb and Ellen Moelis. TERF's current Board includes Co-Chairs Kathleen Anderson DVM and James Orsini DVM, Margaret H. Duprey, Gretchen and Roy Jackson, Ellen and Herb Moelis, Wendy Moon, Anita Motion, Scott Palmer VMD, Josh Pons, Lucy Zungailia, Katelyn Jackson, and Lynn Cassimeris Ph.D.

“We continue to support Thoroughbred health and welfare grants by combining education and research with our vision in making racing safer,” said Orsini.

The Thoroughbred Education and Research Foundation (TERF) awarded $12,000 to Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine to be used as grants for two need-based scholarships totaling $12,000 ($6,000 each) for students interested in pursuing equine medicine after graduation. The latest scholarship recipients are Bianca Ruspi and Tyler Olson.

“The Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine is very grateful for the support TERF is providing to its students, especially those planning to pursue equine medicine,” Sheila Reakes, Director of Annual Giving at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine states. “The availability of scholarships has become increasingly important in helping graduates lower their debt load and in allowing them to consider a broader array of careers, including those in more rural areas where quality veterinarians are much needed, upon graduation.”

The Thoroughbred Education and Research Foundation (TERF) has awarded $12,000 to Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine to be used for educational purposes.

Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine’s mission is to advance veterinary medicine at the interface of discovery and application.

In alignment with their mission to support and promote equine education by supporting organizations that are educating the public on the proper care of horses, TERF continues to offer their financial assistance in 2020.

Cornell University will use the grant for two need-based scholarships totaling $12,000 ($6,000 each) for students (Gianna Paganelli and Lili Becktell 2020-21 recipients) interested in pursuing equine medicine after graduation.
