Bell’s the One Is Number One In Roxelana

Bell's the One showed her love for the Twin Spires Saturday in the Roxelana Overnight Stakes at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. The 5-year-old mare, trained by Neil Pessin and ridden by Corey Lanerie, went four wide on the race's final turn and ran down Sconsin in the stretch to win the Roxelana by a three-quarters of a length.

In a field of six, Sconsin, who won the Grade 3 Winning Colors Stakes in her previous start, went into the gate as the favorite with Bell's the One as the second choice. At the break, longshot Jungle Juice grabbed a short advantage, but Four Graces and Julien Leparoux took over the lead with Jungle Juice and Sconsin tightly packed behind her. Bell's the One ran fifth in the tightly bunched field, Lanerie moving his mare to the outside as the field entered the final turn. As Sconsin and Tyler Gafflione passed Four Graces to take the lead, Lanerie positioned Bell's the One to Sconsin's outside and set her down for a drive in the stretch. Gafflione moved Sconsin to the rail, but her time at the front was brief as Bell's the One had more than enough left to grab the lead for the good. Sconsin held on to second place with Miss Mosaic third. Four Graces, Shesomajestic, and Jungle Juice rounded out the field.

The Roxelana is Bell's the One's first win in three starts in 2021. Her previous wins at Churchill Downs include the 2020 G3 Winning Colors and the Grade 1 Derby City Distaff. Sired by Majesticperfection, Bell's the One is out of the Street Cry (IRE) mare Street Mate. Bred by Bret Jones, the 5-year-old mare is owned by Lothenbach Stables. She was sold by Brereton Jones to Lothenbach Stables for $155,000 at the 2017 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Yearling Sale.

Corey Lanerie knew Bell's the One was ready for her race with Sconsin. “Today I let her run a little bit out of the gate because I didn't think the pace would be too fast. Then, I was sort of in the pocket (inside of Sconsin) and I didn't really like my spot because I know she needs to be outside of horses. I took her back from there to make sure I got first run at Sconsin. You could tell she was ready to run a big race and Neil had her ready to go.”

Neil Pessin has his sights set on Breeders' Cup for Bell's the One. “The last four or five days you could tell in her training she was ready to run a big race. She got a much better trip today than in her last start. Now, we'll look to get her ready for the Breeders' Cup. She'll likely run in the (Breeders' Cup) 'Win and You're In' at Keeneland (Grade II, Thoroughbred Club of America). I'm not sure yet if I'll run her once before then or not. We'll wait and see but the goal is the Breeders' Cup at the end of the year.”

Caddo River Out of Derby

Shortleaf Stable's 'TDN Rising Star' Caddo River (Hard Spun) will not make the line-up for Saturday's GI Kentucky Derby after spiking a fever over the weekend.

“We noticed he was off his feed and took his temperature yesterday afternoon. It was slightly elevated,” trainer Brad Cox said. “It's just really bad timing being this close to the Derby. We drew blood on him [Sunday] morning and his white cell counts were a little high. We just can't run him on Saturday with being a little off his game.”

The defection of the GI Arkansas Derby runner-up will allow GII Remsen S. winner Brooklyn Strong (Wicked Strong) to enter the Derby field. The Mark Schwartz colorbearer, most recently fifth in the Apr. 3 GII Wood Memorial, is scheduled to work at Parx Monday morning for trainer Daniel Velazquez and could ship into Churchill Downs Tuesday morning if all goes well.

After sending his Derby quartet out to jog Sunday morning, trainer Todd Pletcher announced a Derby rider for Sainthood (Mshawish). The GIII Jeff Ruby Steaks runner-up will be ridden next Saturday by Corey Lanerie.

“We know how well Corey rides Churchill,” Pletcher said. “That was the key element in giving him the mount. We're thinking along the lines that we did with [2010 Derby winner] Super Saver and Calvin Borel. [Borel] rode this track so well and that earned him the mount then.”

Lanerie has ridden in the Derby four times with his best finish a runner-up effort aboard Lookin At Lee (Lookin at Lucky) in 2017.

Hronis Racing and Talla Racing's unbeaten GI Santa Anita Derby winner Rock Your World (Candy Ride {Arg}) and Roadrunner Racing, Boat Racing and Strauss Bros Racing's GII Louisiana Derby winner Hot Rod Charlie (Oxbow) arrived at Churchill Downs shortly after noon Sunday following a flight from Southern California.

Trainer Steve Asmussen sent out his GI Kentucky Oaks contenders to work under the Twin Spires Sunday. Stonestreet Stables' homebreds Pauline's Pearl (Tapit) and Clairiere (Curlin) completed their final Oaks preparations both working four furlongs over a “good” main track in a pair of maintenance solo drills.

GIII Fantasy S. Pauline's Pearl worked immediately after the track opened for Derby and Oaks horses at 7:30 and went in :50.60, with splits of :13 and :25.40 under exercise rider Wilson Fabian.

GII Rachel Alexandra S. winner Clairiere followed about a minute behind under Angel Garcia and went in :49.60, with splits of :11.80, :23.80, while galloping out in 1:03.40.

Pauline's Pearl was credited with the 22nd fastest time of 27 at the distance, while Clairiere was 10th fastest. Just over an hour later, Asmussen was beaming back Barn 38.

“We're ecstatic,” Asmussen said. “Pauline's Pearl went first and my first words to Wilson were 'How did she go?' and he said, 'Beautiful.' Both are regular riders of the horses so they are good measures and extremely familiar with them.”

Bell’s The One Returns In Saturday’s Grade 1 Madison At Keeneland

Lothenbach Stables' Bell's the One, winner of the Derby City Distaff (G1) and third in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1), headlines a field of seven fillies and mares entered Tuesday for the 20th running of the $300,000 Madison (G1) for fillies and mares going 7 furlongs on the main track at Keeneland.

The Madison, one of six graded stakes on Saturday's 11-race program, will be run as the 10th race with a 6:02 p.m. post time. First post time Saturday is 1:05 p.m.

Trained by Neil Pessin, Bell's the One will be making her 2021 debut in the Madison. Winner of the 2019 Raven Run (G2) here, Bell's the One will be ridden by Corey Lanerie and break from post position four.

Also exiting the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint and making her 2021 debut is Sconsin, who finished a half-length behind Bell's the One in the Breeders' Cup. Owned by Lloyd Madison Farms IV and trained by Greg Foley, Sconsin will be ridden by James Graham and break from post position six.

Another Grade 1 winner in the field is Godolphin's homebred Fair Maiden, winner of the La Brea in December at Santa Anita.

Trained by Eoin Harty, Fair Maiden was a troubled fourth in last fall's Qatar Fort Springs here on the Breeders' Cup undercard. Brian Hernandez Jr. has the mount and will break from post position seven.

The field for the Madison, with riders and weights from the rail out, is: Sanenus (Javier Castellano, 118 pounds), Estilo Talentoso (Jesus Castanon, 118), Mundaye Call (Florent Geroux, 118), Bell's the One (Lanerie, 120), Kimari (Joel Rosario, 118), Sconsin (Graham, 118) and Fair Maiden (Hernandez, 123).

One-Time $25,000 Claim Queen Nekia Earns Graded Status With Royal Delta Win

Ken Copenhaver's Queen Nekia benefited from a hotly contested early pace to earn graded-stakes credentials with a rallying victory in Saturday's $100,000 Royal Delta (G3) at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

The Saffie Joseph Jr.-trained 6-year-old Harlington mare, who finished a close third in last year's edition of the 1 1/16-mile stakes for older fillies and mares after being claimed for $25,000 two starts earlier, also benefited from a ground-saving ride by Corey Lanerie to pull off a 29-1 upset.

Queen Nekia rated well off a strong pace contested by 3-2 favorite Mrs. Danvers and the Joseph-trained Gibberish, who set fractions of 23.31 and 46.48 seconds for the first half mile. Gibberish continued to turn back Mrs. Danvers's outside challenge into to the homestretch turn, but Eres Tu, the 2-1 second betting choice made a sweeping move around them entering the stretch and appeared on her way to her fourth straight win. The new leader seemed to stall upon getting a clear lead at the top of the stretch and suddenly came under attack from Queen Nekia, who kicked strongly along the rail and drew away by 1 ¾ lengths.

“It set up good. I saw a little pace on paper, and she broke really good. I was trying to get over to the rail, and then finally I just kind of let all the speed go and got back a little bit, probably a little bit further than I wanted to,” said Lanerie following his third victory of the day. “When I called on her, I had a lot of horse.”

Eres Tu finished second under Irad Ortiz Jr., 4 ¾ lengths ahead of Bajan Girl. Gibberish finished fourth and Mrs. Danvers checked in fifth.

Queen Nekia, who ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:43,62, had most recently finished fourth behind stablemate Gibberish in the $100,000 Treasure Coast at Delta Downs Nov. 27.

“[For] both horses, since they ran together at Delta Downs, this has been the intended target – give them a freshening and train them together. Gibberish, I don't think she was at her best, plus I think the pace didn't help her,” Joseph said. “Queen Nekia finished third last year. She's a deserving winner. She's a filly that deserved a Grade 3. She's a filly we claimed for $25,000, and this makes her so much more valuable.
