Hoist the Gold Rises to the Occasion in the WAYI Phoenix

Hoist the Gold (Mineshaft) punched his ticket to the GI Breeders' Cup Sprint with an overdue first graded stakes win in Friday's 'Win and You're In' GII Stoll Keenon Odgen Phoenix S. at Keeneland.

He finished third in the GI Runhappy Malibu S. at Santa Anita last December and second in this year's GI Churchill Downs S. on the Kentucky Derby undercard. He fell just a neck short in this spring's GIII Commonwealth S. in Lexington. Last seen finishing a well-beaten sixth in the GII Pat O'Brien S. Aug. 26 at Del Mar, the Dream Team One Racing homebred was installed as a 6-1 shot here.

Riding the rail, the hooded colt backed off along the backstretch as G1SW Sibelius (Not This Time) and MSW Doctor Oscar (Shackleford) battled for the lead. Fanned three wide around the far turn, the Dallas Stewart trainee took over past the eighth pole and held off his pursuers to take home his first graded stakes win by 3/4 of a length. Nakatomi (Firing Line) was second.

“When you show up with a nice horse and a jock [John Velazquez] that's won five Grade Ones for you, you got a lot of confidence,” Stewart said. “I didn't worry about a thing down the backside. It played out perfect. He got him out. The horse loves this track.”

Mineshaft, sire of 17 crops of racing age, now has 61 stakes winners and 24 graded stakes winners to his credit. Hoist the Gold is the second to race out of Tacit Approval, who is also responsible for a yearling filly named Anakarina (Vekoma). She foaled a colt by Mucho Macho Man this year. Second dam Punch Appeal (Successful Appeal) is a multiple stakes winner.

Faucheux, Gutierrez Earn Fair Grounds Titles

New Orleans native Ron Faucheux earned his third consecutive training title with 42 wins at the Fair Grounds meeting which concluded Sunday. The trainer's title went down to meet's last day as Bret Calhoun, the early leader who was in search of his first local crown, and four-time champ Brad Cox were both in striking range, but had to settle for a tie for second with 37 wins apiece.

With 64 wins, Rey Gutierrez captured the first leading rider title of his young career. The 27-year-old's top moment came when Southlawn (Pioneerof the Nile) posted an upset in the GII Fair Grounds Oaks, offering personal redemption for Gutierrez after he and his mount Hidden Connection finished a diminishing nose shy of Echo Zulu last year.

With 20 wins from 137 starts in their first full meet at Fair Grounds,  Genesis and Sylvia Castillo's L and G Racing Stable won the track's owners' race.

Fair Grounds offered the richest stakes schedule in Louisiana history at $8.5 million during its 151st season of racing, with the Mar. 25 Louisiana Derby Day card leading the way with a $3.1-million single-card record for purses offered in the state.

“Our 151st season was one for the books,” Fair Grounds president Doug Shipley said. “Throughout the entire season our racing team proved once again they are the best in the business. Starting with an amazing Thanksgiving celebration to kick off the season and finishing with a fairytale ending with the Shantel Lanerie Second Line celebration. There were tears on the course this year as jockey Corey Lanerie returned to Fair Grounds to take home the win in the race named to honor his beloved-by-all wife. Their daughter Brittlyn served as the Grand Marshal for the Second Line walk completing out the season with full hearts all around.”

Bell’s The One Catches Club Car To Take Dream Supreme

Sconsin's scratch did not take any of the drama out of the Dream Supreme at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. Instead, a sizzling early pace gave way to late moves by first Club Car and then Bell's the One, who passed Club Car in the final strides to notch another stakes victory.

Elle Z darted out of the gate to log quick fractions of :21.54 for the first quarter and :45.24 for the half-mile. Vintage Ready and Frank's Rockette were second and third early, but Elle Z could not hold on in the stretch, fading as Frank's Rockette came on to take the lead briefly before Club Car made her late move for the front. On her outside, Bell's the One and Corey Lanerie came running in the race's final yards, passing Club Car just before the wire to win by a length. Frank's Rockette held on for third.

Bell's the One paid $3.60, $2.20, and $2.10. Club Car paid $2.80 and $2.20. Frank's Rockette paid.

Bred in Kentucky by Bret Jones, Bell's the One is a 5-year-old mare by Majesticperfection out of the Street Cry (IRE) mare Street Mate. Trained by Neil Pessin, she was consigned by Brereton Jones and sold to her owner Lothenbach Stables for $155,000 at the July 2017 Fasig-Tipton Select Yearling Sale. With her win in the Dream Supreme, Bell's the One has four wins in seven starts in 2021, for a lifetime record of 11 wins in 22 starts and career earnings of $1,520,275.

Jockey Tyler Gaffalione Rides Six Winners Friday At Churchill Downs

Six-time Churchill Downs leading rider Tyler Gaffalione added his name to the record books Friday when he notched six wins beneath the historic Twin Spires.

It was the 12th time a jockey has won six races on a single card at Churchill Downs but the first since Corey Lanerie in 2012. This was also the first time since 1907 that a rider has won with all six of their mounts, equaling Jimmie Lee.

Gaffalione won the first three races on the card aboard Not That Serious ($8.80), Jazzy Lady ($4.40) and Cousteau ($4.80). The 27-year-old jockey did not have a mount in Race 4 but won with his next three mounts Megan's Clara ($4.60), Candy Tycoon ($10.80) and Sarah Harper ($3). Gaffalione was originally scheduled to ride in Races 8 and 9 but his mounts were scratched.

“I was joking with the guys in the room that I wanted to ride one more and get the record,” Gaffalione said. “It was a really good day at the track.”

Jockeys Julien Leparoux (2008) and Pat Day (1984) are the only two riders to record seven wins on a single card at Churchill Downs.

Prior to Lanerie's six wins on May 27, 2012, the other times the feat occurred were by Jamie Theriot (2008), Julien Leparoux (2007), Calvin Borel (2007), Day (1999, 1992, 1991, 1984), Randy Romero (1985), Steve Brooks (1948) and Lee (1907).

Gaffalione won seven races at Gulfstream Park on July 4, 2017.
