Mishriff Tops Expected Field Of Seven For Saturday’s Coral-Eclipse Stakes

Seven horses will go forward for the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown Park on Saturday, July 3. The 10-furlong Group 1 showpiece takes place over 10 furlongs, forms part of the British Champions Series, and is the first major contest where those from the Classic generation take on their older counterparts.

Heading the market at 13-8 with sponsor Coral is Mishriff for John and Thady Gosden. The 4-year-old has already bagged two very valuable prices overseas this year with victories in the word's most valuable race, the Saudi Cup, and the Group One Dubai Sheema Classic.

Aidan O'Brien has trained five Coral-Eclipse winners and needs one more victory to equal the record of Alec Taylor Jr and Sir Michael Stoute. O'Brien has three horses going forward headed by St Mark's Basilica. The 3-year-old Siyouni colt is a dual Classic winner in France this season, having scooped the Poule d'Essai des Poulains (French 2,000 Guineas) and Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby) so far in 2021. The Ballydoyle trio is completed by 2019 Juddmonte International hero Japan and Armory, who was a close third behind stable companion Love in the Prince Of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Also going forward are last year's Group 1 QIPCO Champion Stakes hero Addeybb, last seen when landing the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick, Australia in April, and Wonderful Tonight, who was the very impressive winner of the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot on her seasonal reappearance. If successful, 7-year-old Addeybb would create history by becoming the oldest ever winner.

The confirmations are completed by El Drama, a disappointment behind St Mark's Basilica last time but previously a cozy winner of the Listed Dee Stakes at Chester.

David Stevens of Coral said: “In the absence of Lord North, who had been backed into 6-1 for Saturday's race, this year's Coral-Eclipse market is dominated by the last two winners of the Prix du Jockey Club, with the year-older Mishriff just shading favoritism at 13-8, ahead of this year's Chantilly winner, St Mark's Basilica, at 7-4.

“Of the rest, both Addeybb and Wonderful Tonight could both shorten in the betting should plenty of rain fall over Sandown this week.”

Enable Has Come Forward Since Eclipse, Will Face Three Ballydoyle Rivals In Saturday’s King George

Superstar Enable will face three rivals in her bid to win an historic third King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes at Ascot on Saturday. The champion racemare began her 2020 campaign with a second-place finish to Ghaiyyath in the Group 1 Coral-Eclipse.

“I was very clear with everyone before Sandown that she had found it difficult to get to racing fitness since she is now a 6-year-old mare,” trainer John Gosden told racingpost.com. “She is a big powerful lady and certainly not of the neater, lighter-framed, type. She ran very well in the Eclipse and the race has had the desired effect of bringing her on.”

Ryan Moore will ride Japan, while Oisin Murphy picks up the mount on Anthony Van Dyck and William Buick will ride Sovereign.

Enable would become the only horse to win three King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes with herself (2017,2019), Swain (1997,1998) and Dahlia (1973,1974) all on two wins currently.

More history could be made as Enable's evergreen jockey Frankie Dettori bids to equal Lester Piggott's record of seven victories in the prestigious Group 1.

Enable To Seek Historic Treble In Saturday’s King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes

Enable will face a select field of seven rivals in Saturday's King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes.

The world-class mare will seek to secure her third victory in the race – a feat that has never been achieved before by any horse.

Having won races all over the world, this race falls very much as part of Enable's plan to secure a historic third win in the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

Her reappearance run this season came earlier in the month in the Coral-Eclipse where she went down battling to a match-fit Ghayyaith. Since that race connections have reported that she is back where they want her, with assistant trainer Thady Gosden saying “She's very well at the moment, working nicely and has come on a lot for her run at Sandown.”

“At the moment things are going very smoothly. Her attitude is very good at home and physically she's improved a lot.”

Standing in her way will be six rivals from Aidan O'Brien's stable and one additional runner from her own stable.

Of the O'Brien sextet, the obvious challenges come from another star-mare in Magical and colt, Japan. Magical was last seen winning the Pretty Polly Stakes over in Ireland, and is no stranger to a match up with Enable – this would be their sixth meeting with Enable leading 6-0.

Japan has also encountered Enable a couple of times, finishing close to her in both the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and also the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown.

Of the other O'Brien horses, Magic Wand has engaged in plenty of high-class battles around the world so would be an ideal candidate. Anthony Van Dyke was the winner of a thrilling 2019 Investec Derby so has the pedigree to thrive in this race.

Enable's only runner outside of the O'Brien stable comes from her own stable in Fanny Logan. The progressive four-year-old was last seen winning at Ascot when securing a competitive Hardwicke Stakes at the Royal meeting.

Enable Showed ‘Zest And Desire’ In Sunday’s Coral-Eclipse Defeat By Ghaiyyath

Champion racemare Enable, kept in training for 2020 to seek a third victory in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, began her 6-year-old season with a strong second in Sunday's Group 1 Coral-Eclipse at Sandown. The John Gosden-trained Juddmonte mare was defeated 2 1/4 lengths by frontrunner Ghaiyyath, but fended off challenges from Japan, Magic Wand, and Deirdre.

“We're delighted with that, she ran a gorgeous race,” Gosden told racingpost.com. “We know about Ghaiyyath and Sandown is a great front-runner's track. We're very happy. She enjoyed it and the zest and desire was there, but trying to get involved with a front-running horse like him was never going to be her deal.”

Gosden said Enable was only 85 percent fit for Sunday's race, and jockey Frankie Dettori confirmed that the mare was a bit tired in the final 100 yards.

Up next, plans call for Enable to try for a record-setting three-peat in the King George at Ascot on July 25. The mare's major year-end target is a historic third win in the Arc, a goal she fell just short of last year when Waldgeist ran her down over the very soft ground at York.

Enable won the Arc in 2017 and 2018, and became the first horse in history to win the Arc and the Breeders' Cup Turf in the same season when she crossed the wire first at Churchill Downs in November 2018.
