Dubawi’s Alfred Munnings A New TDN Rising Star

Aidan O'Brien trainee Alfred Munnings (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}–Best In The World {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) was all the rage for Friday's seven-furlong Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden at Leopardstown and justified market support, and then some, with a dominant debut performance, earning a TDN Rising Star rosette by 4 1/2 lengths on his birthday. The stable had won the contest in recent years with G1 Dewhurst S.-winning sire War Command (War Front) and G2 Vintage S.-winning sire War Decree (War Front) and also prepared Gleneagles (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) to finish fourth in 2014. The eventual winner was away sharply and shadowed the leader in a close-up second through halfway. Sent to the front off the home turn, the 8-11 favourite quickened beyond recall soon after passing the quarter-mile marker and maintained a high tempo under minimal encouragement in the latter stages to easily outclass Segomo (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) by daylight.

“Aidan [O'Brien] was very happy with that and the plan is to go for the [Listed] Chesham [S. at Royal Ascot],” revealed Ballydoyle representative Chris Armstrong. “He was very professional, he knew his job and delivered on the promise he's shown so far. He's a good mover and has the pedigree behind him. Fingers crossed now he has a good chance in the Chesham. Hopefully, it's a proper maiden and he's won it very impressively.”

Alfred Munnings, half-brother to a weanling colt by Wootton Bassett (GB), is the third of four foals and second winner out of G3 Give Thanks S. victrix Best In The World (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), the first being last year's runaway G1 Epsom, G1 Irish and G1 Yorkshire Oaks-winning sensation Snowfall (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}). Best In The World is a full-sister to three pattern-race winners, namely MG1SW G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe-winning superstar Found (Ire), GSW G1 Epsom Oaks and G1 Irish Oaks placegetter Divinely (Ire) and G3 Noblesse S. victrix Magical Dream (Ire). Found's first foal is G2 Vintage S. victor and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf and G1 St James's Palace S. placegetter Battleground (War Front). The May-foaled bay's second dam is G1 Matron S. and G1 Lockinge S. heroine Red Evie (Ire) (Intikhab).

Queen Olly Yet Another Rising Star For No Nay Never

David Loughnane is firing on all cylinders with his juvenile band this term and added another string to his Royal Ascot bow, and  provided Coolmore sire No Nay Never with a fourth 'TDN Rising Star' of the campaign, when Amo Racing's €300,000 Goffs Orby yearling Queen Olly (Ire) (No Nay Never–Surprisingly {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) routed nine rivals in Friday's £20,000 Frank Whittle Partnership ebfstallions.com Maiden S. over York's straight six furlongs. The February-foaled bay was swiftly into stride and occupied a handy fifth, just behind the front rank, through the early fractions of this unveiling. Looming large going well at the two pole, the 11-4 favourite was ridden to the front approaching the final furlong and surged clear in the latter stages to outpoint Catch The Paddy (Ire) (No Nay Never) by an impressive 3 1/2 lengths. In winning, Queen Olly provided her sire (by Scat Daddy) with a record four juvenile pre-Royal Ascot TDN Rising Stars.

“I didn't feel any pressure because we've had more expensive juveniles run this year and, if I felt pressure, it was because I felt she was the nicest we had,” Loughnane said. “I don't really feel pressure, we make an assessment of them and they have to go and prove it's right. They don't always, but she's done it tenfold. She's still a bit green and had to muscle her way out of a tricky spot. She hit the front, pricked her ears and didn't really do a lot. She took a fair bit of pulling up and it'll take a good one to beat her at [Royal] Ascot. I said the first day I sat on her she was a Royal Ascot filly and she's an Albany filly to me, all day long. She's out of a Galileo mare so she could be better over seven furlongs going forward, but Royal Ascot was what we had in mind and I think she's proved she's good enough.”

Queen Olly is the third of five foals and second scorer produced by a full-sister to GSW G1 Irish Derby and G1 Melbourne Cup runner-up Tiger Moth (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and G3 Balanchine S. second Butterscotch (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Her dam Surprisingly (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who is also kin to MGSP sire Coach House (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}), is a daughter of MG1SP distaffer Lesson In Humility (Ire) (Mujadil) and has a yearling filly by Calyx (GB) and a weanling colt by Into Mischief to come.

The filly was purchased for €300,000 at Goffs Orby by Alex Elliott/Ben McElroy for Amo Racing. “She was a very special filly from the get-go, from the moment I laid eyes on her. She had the have-to-have sticker on her,” said Elliott. “By No Nay Never out of a Galileo mare, and an exceptional physical. The reports from Day 1 have been very good, so let's hope it's the start of something special.”

United Nations Prevails in Lingfield’s Derby Trial

Team Ballydoyle had registered five prior wins in Lingfield's Listed SBK Derby Trial, including with subsequent G1 Epsom Derby hero Anthony Van Dyck (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in 2019, and Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore teamed up once again with United Nations (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}–Christmas Kid, by Lemon Drop Kid) to continue their banner week with a hard-fought victory in this year's edition. For sire Galileo, it was a fourth new stakes winner of the week and extended the Coolmore icon's world-record tally to 351. United Nations graduated over seven furlongs in his Sept. 16 debut at Naas, following up with a seventh behind subsequent G1 2000 Guineas hero Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in Newmarket's one-mile Oct. 9 G3 Autumn S., and lined up for this test coming back off a fourth tackling 10 furlongs in Epsom's Apr. 19 Listed Blue Riband Trial. Moore was content to accept a tow in second as last month's Newbury maiden winner Natural World (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) set the tempo until well beyond halfway. Scrubbed along with three furlongs remaining, the 9-4 second favourite gained an edge approaching the final furlong and was driven out to deny Godolphin number one Walk of Stars (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), who had flattered to deceive in the closing stages, by 3/4-of-a-length.

“United Nations has been round Epsom and has clearly come out of his race there well,” said Coolmore's Kevin Buckley. “He ticks the boxes, Aidan hoped he would put his experience into practice today and we thought he'd improve with the extra step up in distance. It was a steep learning curve at Epsom [last time], we were happy with that performance and now he as done that here. Having a large team for Epsom is a nice problem to have.” Paul Smith added, “It's a great learning curve going from trial to championship and we've been delighted with the way the respective horses have run at Chester and now Lingfield. We hope it will continue at York.”

United Nations becomes the third black-type winner and fifth stakes performer for GI Ashland S. heroine Christmas Kid (Lemon Drop Kid), who also had the Listed Caravaggio S. victor and G1 Vincent O'Brien S. placegetter Christmas (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and the Listed Leopardstown 2000 Guineas Trial scorer Black Sea (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Christmas Kid is also the dam of G3 Killavullan S. runner-up Michaelmas (Elusive Quality) and G2 King Edward VII S. third Father Christmas (Ire) (Bernadini). The next dam is dual Grade III victrix Christmas Gift (Green Desert), who produced the stakes-winning Elusive Gift (Elusive Quality) and is the ancestress of the GIII Eddie D S. victor Holy Lute (Midnight Lute). United Nations' third dam, Christmas Bonus (Key To The Mint), has three stakes winners to her credit including stakes-winning GI Santa Anita Oaks second Bright Candles (El Gran Senor), whose own progeny list is headed by MGISW sire Grand Slam (Gone West). Christmas Kid also has a 2-year-old full-sister to United Nations to come.

Galileo’s Star of India Battles to Dee Success at Chester

Chester's May meeting, day two, status quo. Fresh off a day for the ages, Galileo extended his record tally of stakes winners to 350 when Aidan O'Brien trainee Star of India (Ire) displayed all the battling traits of his sire by finding plenty in the latter stages of Thursday's Listed Homeserve Dee S. to claim first black-type rosette in ultimately impressive style. Star of India became a 'TDN Rising Star' with a taking score over seven furlongs in his debut at Leopardstown last October, but slipped to fifth when attempting to make all upped to one mile for Newmarket's G3 Craven S. in his only other start on seasonal return last month. The well-backed 6-4 favourite required early encouragement from the inside box and occupied a slot along the fence in third after passing the judge first time in this extended 10-furlong test. Back under urging with a half mile remaining, he was guided to the outside off the home turn for his challenge passing the furlong marker and lengthened clear powered by continued coaxing to stop the clock with a 2 1/4-length buffer. Comfortably on top through the line, Star of India was a notch above Cresta (Fr) (New Bay {GB}), who outbobbed Sonny Liston (Ire) (Lawman {Fr}) by a head for second.
