It’s ‘Jack’ on the Cutback in Jerkens

While he lost nothing in defeat when trying two turns for the first time in the GI Haskell Invitational S. the Jack Christopher (Munnings) everyone is accustom to was back at Saratoga, charging home a decisive winner of the GI H. Allen Jerkens Memorial S.

Hammered down to 1-2 favoritism getting back around one turn, the flashy chestnut tracked Conagher (Jimmy Creed) from second through a :22.18 first quarter. Drawing alongside as the half went in :44.53, Jack Christopher skipped to the front when Jose Ortiz shook the reins at him and strode clear to win by X over last year's GI Hopeful S. winner Gunite (Gun Runner).

“Exiting the Haskell, that was going to be our plan if he didn't win and cut him back to this prestigious race here,” winning trainer Chad Brown said. “I'm just so proud of the horse. He's been a very consistent horse. He's never disappointed us in a workout or a race. Jose [Ortiz] rode another fantastic race on him. He broke sharp and used good judgment to rate him just a touch. Every pole, he was in control of the race. I'm so proud of both Jose and the horse.”

“Four weeks [rest] and he ran huge,” said winning pilot Jose Ortiz. “He gave me everything he had and a very good race. Honestly, though he was a little offbeat down the backside but at the three-eighths pole he picked up little by little and I knew when I got next to the one-horse [Conagher], I knew I got him. From then on he just kept going the same pace. I knew if he didn't stop, he was going to run them off their feet because he was running the whole way. Seven [furlongs] is a tricky distance. I'd rather go a mile but seven-eighths is tricky. The pace is a little bit faster and you have to run the whole way there and he did.”

Tabbed a 'TDN Rising Star' off an ultra-impressive debut romp at this oval exactly 364 days ago, Jack Christopher followed suit with a good-looking score in Belmont's GI Champagne S. in October. The early favorite going into the Breeders' Cup, he was a late scratch by the Del Mar vets with a minor left shin issue. The $135,000 FTKOCT buy reemerged on the First Saturday in May with a facile victory in the GII Pat Day Mile and blew away the field with a 10-length demolition of Belmont's GI Wood Stephens S. June 11. Stretched to a route for the first time at Monmouth in the Haskell July 23, he gave a valiant effort and ultimately finished third.

Pedigree Notes:

Jack Christopher is one of five Grade I winners for Coolmore's Munnings. His dam is also represented by an

unnamed Mo Town 2-year-old filly and a Complexity filly of this year. She was bred back to Munnings. Rushin No Blushin, a maiden of eight career starts, was claimed for $50,000 out of her career finale by owner/trainer Neil Pessin at Keeneland in 2013. The half-sister to MGISW and useful sire Street Boss (Street Cry (Ire)) subsequently brought $70,000 from Castleton Lyons, in foal to Congrats, at the 2014 KEENOV sale.

Bisou Bro Justifies Favoritism in Spa Opener

1st-Saratoga, $105,000, Msw, 8-27, 2yo, 6f, 1:10.26, ft, 1 3/4 lengths.
VERIFYING (c, 2, Justify–Diva Delite {GSW, $300,067}, by Repent), a half to none other than Midnight Bisou (Midnight Lute), Ch. Older Dirt Female, MGISW, $3,971,500, ran to advanced billing to take a typically tough-looking Travers Day maiden as the 3-5 favorite. Debuting with blinkers on, the bay broke well and took a short lead to post splits of :22.90 and :46.04. He turned for home a bit wide, allowing Track Mate (Union Rags–Teammate) to challenge to his inside at the top of the lane. The pair seemed to make contact as Verifying shifted in when switching leads, but the chalk quickly righted the ship and leveled off well to pull clear late by 1 3/4 lengths while providing his hot-starting, Triple Crown-winning sire (by Scat Daddy) with an 11th winner. Track Mate, sixth in his turf route unveiling for D. Wayne Lukas, held second over Parx invader and fellow second timer Didinger (Bolt d'Oro). King's Glory (Speightstown), the $575,000 half-brother to GSW Dr. Dorr (Lookin At Lucky), was fourth. The winner is also half to precocious Stage Left (Congrats), SP, $345,808 and a foal colt by Uncle Mo. Diva Delite, who fetched $1.2 million from David Redvers while carrying Verifying at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton November sale, was bred to Gun Runner for 2023. Holy Roman Emperor’s Jadoomi Notches Goodwood Triumph

Coming back off an extended sabbatical, 2020's G1 Criterium International third Jadoomi (Fr) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}–South Sister {GB}, by Sakhee) registered a stakes breakthrough in last month's Listed Prix du Pays d'Auge at Clairefontaine when turning up for just his second outing in almost two years and continued on a rapid upward trajectory with victory in Saturday's G2 William Hill Celebration Mile at Goodwood. The 10-3 chance recovered from an early stumble and shadowed the pace in second for the most part. Scrubbed along to reduce arrears approaching the quarter-mile marker, he was unable to subdue stablemate Finest Sound (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) until late in the day and kept on relentlessly under continued rousting to deny that tenacious rival by a neck in the dying strides.

“Both of them ran a huge race, I'm absolutely delighted and couldn't be happier,” said trainer Ed Crisford. “Jadoomi loved that ground and just outstayed them at the very end. We've got races like the [G2] Prix Dollar on Arc weekend and he is also in the [G2] Boomerang S. at Leopardstown, so I think we'll just see how he is and go from there. He likes this softer ground, so I think we'll follow the rain.”

Jadoomi becomes the 53rd pattern-race winner for his sire (by Danehill) and the first for South Sister (GB) (Sakhee), herself a winning full-sister to G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains hero Tin Horse (Ire). He is kin to a 2-year-old colt by Gleneagles (Ire), a yearling filly by Shalaa (Ire) and a weanling colt by Invincible Spirit (Ire). His second dam, G3 Prix d'Aumale victrix Joyeuse Entree (GB) (Kendor {Fr}), also produced Listed Criterium de l'Ouest winner Becomes You (GB) (Lomitas {GB}) and the dam of four-time Group winner Rubaiyat (Ger) (Areion {Ger}) and Listed Prix Amandine victrix Rose Flower (Ger) (Dabirsim {Fr}). South Sister's half-sister Fancy Intense (GB) (Peintre Celebre) is the dam of Listed Rochestown S. victor True Blue Moon (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}). Joyeuse Entree is the leading performer for Cape Of Good Hope (Fr) (Crystal Glitters), herself kin to Listed Grand Prix de Nantes third Miss Bresil (Fr) (Bellypha {Ire}). Descendants of the latter include G3 Prix de Flore winner Miss Salvador (Fr) (Smadoun {Fr}).

Justify’s Aspen Grove Shocks The Flame Of Tara

Craig Bernick's twice-raced maiden Aspen Grove (Ire) (Justify–Data Dependent, by More Than Ready) went postward as an unconsidered 66-1 outsider for Saturday's G3 Newtownanner Stud Irish EBF S. at the Curragh and pounced late in the one-mile former Flame Of Tara S. to secure a first win of any kind. The January-foaled bay debuted with a fifth over six furlongs at the Co. Kildare venue in May, but slipped to 12th when upped to seven at the same track in June last time. The eventual winner settled off the pace in rear through halfway. Coming under pressure to close approaching the quarter-mile marker, she quickened smartly to launch her challenge out wide with 100 yards remaining and kept on in impressive fashion from there to win by 1 1/4 lengths going away from Shelton (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}).

“She ran well here [on Irish] Guineas weekend and we always knew she wanted further,” said winning trainer Fozzy Stack. “The ground was then lightning fast here on the Friday of [Irish] Derby weekend and she just didn't let herself down on it. We'll see whether we run her again [this year] or not.”

Aspen Grove, the third pattern-race winner for her first-crop sire (by Scat Daddy), is the first foal out of GIII Jimmy Durante S. runner-up Data Dependant (More Than Ready), herself kin to G1 Moyglare Stud S. heroine Skitter Scatter (Scat Daddy) and Listed Denford S. victor Victory Dance (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). Her second dam Daneleta (Danehill), who ran third in the G3 Railway S., is the dam of G1 Dewhurst S.-winning sire Intense Focus (Giant's Causeway). Aspen Grove's third dam is Listed Athasi S. and Listed Derrinstown Stud 1000 Guineas Trial S. victrix Zavaleta (Ire) (Kahyasi {Ire}), herself kin to G1 Gran Criterium hero Sholokhov (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), who is also the dam of Daneleta's G3 Noblesse S.-winning full-sister Danelissima (Ire). Data Dependant has also produced a yearling colt by No Nay Never and a weanling full-brother to Aspen Grove.
