Godolphin’s Hurricane Lane Bought By Coolmore As National Hunt Sire

Dual Classic winner Hurricane Lane (Ire) (Frankel {GB}–Gale Force {GB}, by Shirocco {Ger}) will stand in 2024 under Coolmore's National Hunt banner after being purchased from Godolphin this week.

Bred by Philippa Cooper's Normandie Stud and born and raised at Coolmore, the three-time Group 1 winner was purchased by Godolphin for 200,000gns out of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1. Sent into training with Charlie Appleby, the March foal broke his maiden at first asking at Newmarket in October of 2020, and was an undefeated winner of the G2 Dante S., his third start, in 2021. Third in the G1 Derby, Hurricane Lane rattled off the G1 Irish Derby, G1 Grand Prix de Paris, and the G1 St Leger in succession later that summer and was a close third in the G1 Grand Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Kept in training at four, he added a third in the G2 Hardwicke S. at Royal Ascot and was also first in the G2 Jockey Club S. at five. His record stands at 13-7-0-3 with $2,792,161 in earnings.

“We are delighted to get Hurricane Lane,” Coolmore's Cathal Murphy said. “He's a fine, big, good-moving horse with a pedigree and race record to match. He's one of the best sons of Frankel to date and comes from a leading Aga Khan family. His dam by Shirocco won a listed race at Saint-Cloud and her half-sister Seal Of Approval (GB) (Authorized {Ire}) won a Group 1 on British Champions Day.”

A full-brother to the stakes-placed mare Frankel's Storm (GB), Hurricane Lane is from the extended family of dual Derby winner and sire Harzand (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}).

“Hurricane Lane is a very good-looking son of Frankel with plenty of scope and a good action,” added Appleby. “He showed a great constitution throughout his career and was a wonderful racehorse who gave us many great days.”

No Nay Mets Rebounds With Dominant Tyro Win At Monmouth

An upset winner at 10-1 in his Gulfstream debut tackling the Royal Palm Juvenile S., No Nay Mets rebounded from a poor performance at Royal Ascot in the G2 Norfolk S. with a nice showing in Sunday's Tyro S. stateside on the Jersey Shore. The popular wagering choice at 4-5, the 2-year-old looked to repeat his Florida effort by again going straight out for the early advantage, quickly opening up a length on the field in this five-furlong sprint despite a minor bobble at the gate. Showing the way under Paco Lopez, No Nay Mets set fractions of :22.49 and :46.15 and had plenty left to kick away for home, opening up at will to win as easily as he pleased in gate-to-wire fashion.

“He impressed me today,” said winning trainer George Weaver. “I thought he won the right way. I can't be any happier with the horse. We went back to the tactics that were successful at Gulfstream (in his first career start). Paco asked him to run away from there. He had enough speed to make the lead and then on the turn he spurted for home and opened up. He's a nice grass horse. It's really hard to decipher when you're handicapping a race. It was a full field today with a bunch of horses that showed good early gas. You never know where you stand. Our horse definitely had some seasoning. He never ran in a maiden race, he broke his maiden in a stakes and then he went across the pond to run against a huge field at Ascot against some very good horses over ground he wasn't crazy about. He had an experience edge. It didn't take him long to get back on track. We're going to try to put him on a path to get to the Breeders' Cup.”

No Nay Mets is the only foal to date out of Etoile, a full-sister to GSW/MG1SP Ancient Rome from the family of GSW/G1SP Dawn Patrol (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner Pizza Bianca (Fastnet Rock {Aus}). TDN Rising Star Ylang Ylang Makes All For Impressive Silver Flash Success

Aidan O'Brien trainee Ylang Ylang (GB) (Frankel {GB}–Shambolic {Ire}, by Shamardal), who made all for a 'TDN Rising Star' rosette with an impressive 2 3/4-length debut tally tackling seven furlongs at the Curragh in her only prior start, maintained her perfect record with a carbon-copy performance in Thursday's G3 Jockey Club Of Turkey Silver Flash S. at Leopardstown.

The prohibitively priced 1-4 favourite was slick from the inside gate and seized an early two length advantage in this black-type bow. Untroubled through halfway, she was shaken up with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining and kept on powerfully under urging in the closing stages to comfortably hold Vespertillo (Fr) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) by 1 1/2 lengths. She extends O'Brien's record in the seven-furlong contest to an unmatched 13.

“She had a good draw, so obviously Ryan [Moore] used it again, and the next day we'll take our time with her,” the trainer revealed. “She hit the gates the first day she ran and Ryan did the right thing. Today she had the draw and she did the same thing. He said she was probably doing plenty for him in front and he gave her a beautiful ride. We're delighted, Ryan was very happy with her and he said she ran straight through the line. She's a very low mover and he felt that the ground was a little bit deep, but he was very happy with her. Hopefully now it'll be the [G2] Debutante before the [G1] Moyglare and we'll let her sit in and relax. She's very genuine, she tries very hard and wears her heart on her sleeve. Natural is a good way to describe her.”

Pedigree Notes

Ylang Ylang, a 1.5-million guineas Tattersalls Book 1 graduate, is the first of three foals out of Listed Pretty Polly S., Listed Height Of Fashion S. and Listed Chalice S. placegetter Shambolic (Ire) (Shamardal). Son Of Minding A New TDN Rising Star In Ireland

Aidan O'Brien had annexed six of the last 10 renewals of the Curragh's Juddmonte Irish EBF Maiden, among them 2013 winner Australia (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), and he claimed Saturday's latest edition with Henry Longfellow (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), who collected a 'TDN Rising Star' rosette with a taking performance in the seven-furlong test.

The eventual winner was steadily away and raced in a close-up third initially and eased into second approaching halfway. Hitting the front soon after passing the quarter-mile marker, the well-backed 5-4 favourite was never seriously threatened thereafter and kept on powerfully under mild coaxing inside the final furlong to easily outpoint G2 Railway S. fifth Mythology (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) by 1 3/4 lengths.

“He's an exciting type of horse and I'm delighted with him,” the winning trainer said. “He's a Dubawi out of Minding and he looks a lovely horse. Minding handled that [soft] ground and he does bend his knee a bit, but he quickens. Ryan [Moore] said it was very easy, he didn't touch him with the stick and was very happy with him. He had been working well and he just came on the scene lately. For the last three weeks, week after week, he was working well.”

Henry Longfellow is the second of four foals and first runner produced by seven-time Group 1 heroine Minding (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), herself a full-sister to G1 Oaks and GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf victrix Tuesday (Ire), G1 Irish 1000 Guineas heroine Empress Josephine (Ire) and G3 Derrinstown Stud 1000 Guineas Trial winner Kissed By Angels (Ire). The January-foaled bay is full to a yearling filly and half to a weanling filly by Wootton Bassett (GB). Minding, herself a daughter of G1 Coronation S. and G1 Matron S. winner Lillie Langtry (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), was bred to Gun Runner this year.
