Galileo’s Peaceful Takes the Irish 1000

The Curragh’s Saturday card is being run on real Galileo (Ire) ground and his daughter Peaceful (Ire) relished the fast going to bring up a second fillies’ Classic in a week for Ballydoyle as she dominated the G1 Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas. The TDN Rising Star who was last seen finishing runner-up in Newmarket’s Listed Montrose Fillies’ S. was settled in a close-up second by Seamie Heffernan before edging ahead from the two pole. At the line, the 3-1 second favourite had almost two lengths to spare over the strong-closing Fancy Blue (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), with So Wonderful (War Front) close behind in third giving Michael Tabor a one-two-three. Peaceful is Galileo’s 85th Group 1 winner; a new record for a stallion as he surpassed Danehill.

Goffs UK Premier Sale Topper Powers to Rising Stardom at The Curragh

Coolmore’s newcomer Admiral Nelson (GB) (Kingman {GB}) topped the lists at last year’s Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale, when knocked down to M V Magnier for £440,000 and the strapping bay repaid some of that outlay and earned ‘TDN Rising Stardom’ when scorching to an impressive one-length success in Friday’s Tally-Ho Stud Irish EBF (C&G) Maiden over five furlongs at The Curragh. The 5-1 chance was among the slowest into stride, but tanked by rivals to stalk the leading wave from a position in the second rank after the initial strides. Making eyecatching headway on the bridle from halfway, he quickened smartly to launch his challenge at the furlong marker and required minimal encouragement thereafter to outpoint stablemate Merchants Quay (Fr) (No Nay Never) with authority.

“Admiral Nelson travelled well and could be a [G2] Coventry horse,” revealed Aidan O’Brien. “It will depend how he comes out of this and he’ll have to go straight to [Royal] Ascot. He won’t be doing anything after this because it is so close. It’s far from ideal, but we are lucky to have got a race into them. We have run two or three in each of the races. It’s different times, but we are lucky to have the races. [Jockey] Wayne [Lordan] said it’s lovely, fast ground. It’s very safe, but proper Flat ground. We think Merchants Quay is a nice horse as well. Seamus said he was just a little bit in his hands and maybe travelled a little bit too strong. It’s possible he could go to Royal Ascot too, but they may not all get in.”

Admiral Nelson becomes the second scorer out of Listed Dick Poole Fillies’ S. winner Shamandar (Fr) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}), herself a half-sister to stakes-winning G3 Prix La Rochette second Hung Parliament (Fr) (Numerous). His dam, who also downed future luminary Dubawi Heights (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in 2009’s Watership Down Stud Sales Race, is a granddaughter of GII Wilshire H. and GIII Paloma H. heroine Blushing Heiress (Blushing John), herself out of GII Hollywood Lassie S. victress Native Fancy (Our Native).

Maven Becomes First North American Winner For American Pharoah

Triple Crown winner American Pharoah recorded his first winner in North America when Richard Ravin's Maven took the Friday opener at Aqueduct Racetrack.

The Wesley Ward trainee, sent to post as the odds-on favorite in the 4 1/2-furlong maiden sprint, went straight to the lead under jockey Dylan Davis. The chestnut colt marked the opening quarter-mile in 22.55 seconds and the half-mile 46.10 under pressure from Lebda.

At the top of the stretch, Maven was confronted by Lebda but the chestnut comfortably kept his foe at bay to graduate first out, winning by a half-length in a final running time of 52.82 over a main track labeled fast.

“It's definitely big for breeding in North America,” Davis said. “A big thank you to Wesley Ward for continuing to use me. He's had a big impact on my career as a bug boy and continues to do so.

“With the horse being by American Pharoah, everyone expects a lot and he ran really well,” continued Davis. “I was jogging and galloping him in the mornings, so I got a good feel for him. A huge thanks to the connections, I'm sure they're looking for bigger and better things.”

Ward sent out filly Tesorina, American Pharoah's first starter in North America on Wednesday afternoon at Aqueduct, to a third-place finish.

Ward was ecstatic following Maven's triumph and said that American Pharoah's first North American winner will target the Group 2 Norfolk at Royal Ascot on June 20.

“I'm getting texts from everyone watching the race,” Ward said. “It's fantastic for racing, for Coolmore, for owner Richard Ravin and most importantly, for me. What I see is that he's going to be a good sire. The dam [Richies Party Girl] was a turf sprinter and I think this one is going to be a turf sprinter as well. He's had outstanding works over the Polytrack at Turfway which translates to turf. We'll run him in the Norfolk at Royal Ascot and hopefully we can put American Pharoah on the big scale as a sire.”

The 2015 Triple Crown winner's first overall starter was Peter Brant's Monarch of Egypt who graduated at first asking at Naas Racecourse in Ireland for trainer Aidan O'Brien.

Bred in Kentucky by Ward, Maven is the first progeny out of three-time turf stakes winning Any Given Saturday broodmare Richies Party Girl.
