“It is rare to see such a 2-year-old start at stud in France, especially afer winning such prestigious group races in England,” Haras du Mont Goubert manager Victor Langlais told JDG. “He’ll be supported by Haras du Mont Goubert, Haras d’Etreham and Coolmore, who are involved in his breeding career. They purchased the horse from Cheveley Park Stud. Twenty shares [of 60] are for sale at the rate of €20,000, with two seasons for life per share.”

Out of a half-sister to French listed winner and G2 Prix Corrida bridesmaid That Which Is Not (Elusive Quality), Threat counts European highweight and G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup heroine Shiva (Jpn) (Hector Protector) as his second dam. She in turn is a half-sister to G1 Oaks heroine Light Shift (Kingmambo), who has thrown another European highweight in Ulysses (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), a two-time Group 1 winner. This is also the female family of dual Eclipse Award winner Main Sequence (Aldebaran) and European champion Cloth of Stars (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}).

Siyouni’s St Mark’s Basilica Prevails In the Dewhurst

Saturday’s G1 Darley Dewhurst S. proved the latest in a line of O’Brien family benefits, with Aidan stamping his authority with a one-two courtesy of St Mark’s Basilica (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) and Wembley (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Joseph’s Thunder Moon (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) rounding out the placings. Behind that pair when third in The Curragh’s G1 Goffs Vincent O’Brien National S. over this seven-furlong trip Sept. 13, St Mark’s Basilica was under cover early with Frankie Dettori playing a waiting game with the pace strong up ahead. Threaded through a gap to take the advantage approaching the final furlong, the 10-1 shot who is a half-brother to Magna Grecia (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) ultimately had more stamina on the ground than the National hero Thunder Moon and held his stablemate Wembley by 3/4 of a length, with the 11-4 favourite fading to be 1 3/4 lengths away. “You know with Aidan O’Brien, even the number two horse is a strong one,” Dettori said after steering a seventh Dewhurst winner for the master of Ballydoyle. “In fairness, he didn’t put a foot wrong and did everything I asked him to. He’s neat, nimble, handled the dip and a mile will be no problem in the Guineas.”

St Mark’s Basilica’s first three starts took place over six furlongs at The Curragh, with a debut second in a maiden July 26 followed by a fifth placing when the subject of a gamble as the 7-2 favourite for the Aug. 9 G1 Phoenix S. Off the mark next time at the expense of the impressive subsequent scorers Loch Lein (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and Duke of Mantua (Ire) (No Nay Never) and the G3 Round Tower S. third Coulthard (Ire) (Coulsty {Ire}) on soft ground Aug. 22, he was run out of third late by Wembley after Thunder Moon had flown in the National but despite two defeats at the highest level as a member of Team Ballydoyle was impossible to rule out here. Like Friday’s G1 Fillies’ Mile winner Pretty Gorgeous (Fr) (Lawman {Fr}) withdrawn from Sunday’s action at ParisLongchamp due to the feed contamination, the bay was able to find abundant cover in this field packed with talent and reserve his kick for the business end.

While the Richard Hannon pair Chindit (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) and Etonian (Ire) (Olympic Glory {Ire}) were never a factor and the supplemented Alkumait (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) ran too free along with his G2 Mill Reef S. combatant Fivethousandtoone (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), the race was an Irish affair from before the furlong pole. Even the G2 Champions Juvenile winner Cadillac (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) was in the pursuit, while the Jim Bolger runner Poetic Flare (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}) was close enough to the premises to confirm the already-existing impression that the Irish hold sway with the juveniles in 2020. It was left to the 100-1 shot Devilwala (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) to deny a one-two-three-four for the visitors, but the Ralph Beckett trainee had the stand’s rail and there is a strong theory that a bias exists there on this track.

“We’re delighted with both of them,” the Ballydoyle handler said. “The plan was that St Mark’s Basilica would run in France and then Wembley would run in the Dewhurst, that’s the way we were going. We’ve always liked St Mark’s Basilica a lot and we’ve always thought they were very smart colts. The first three were were the same three as in the National Stakes. Every year it’s a great race and the form always stands up. The Breeders’ Cup is possible for the winner, but we’re thinking Battleground will go to the Breeders’ Cup, so he doesn’t have to go.”

As mentioned, St Mark’s Basilica is the second winner of a prestige Newmarket contest for the G3 Silver Flash S.-winning dam Cabaret (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) alongside last year’s G1 2000 Guineas hero Magna Grecia, who also captured the G1 Vertem Futurity Trophy at two and was runner-up in this card’s G3 Autumn S. She is a half to the G3 Solario S. scorer Drumfire (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) and the stakes winner Ho Choi (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), who was also runner-up in the G2 Gimcrack S. The listed-placed third dam Fife (Ire) (Lomond) is also the second dam of the G3 Park S. winner and G1 Moyglare S. runner-up Ugo Fire (Ire) (Bluebird), while this is also the family of the GI Hollywood Turf Cup hero Frenchpark (GB) and the G1 Prix Vermeille heroine Pearly Shells (GB) (Efisio {GB}). The latter is the second dam of the recent G3 Fairy Bridge S. runner-up Pearls Galore (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). Cabaret’s full-brother to St Mark’s Basilica was led out unsold at 650,000gns during Tuesday’s session of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1.

Arc Winner Sottsass Retired From Racing, Set To Enter Stud

A day after winning the Group 1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in France, Sottsass was retired from racing, and he will stand for the Coolmore operation in 2021, Racing Post reports.

The 4-year-old Siyouni colt was campaigned in a 50/50 partnership between Peter Brant and Coolmore, the latter of which purchased its stake in January. Monday's announcement removes a key contender from this year's Breeders' Cup Turf, in which Sottsass earned a “Win and You're In” berth by virtue of his Arc score.

Trained by Jean-Claude Rouget, Sottsass has been a high-level runner in France over the past two seasons.

During his 3-year-old campaign last season, the colt won the G1 Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly and the G2 Prix Niel at Longchamp before finishing third to Enable in that year's Arc.

At four, he won the G1 Prix Ganay at Chantilly and he finished second in the G3 Prix Gontaut-Biron Hong Kong Jockey Club at Deauville ahead of his Arc victory.

Bred in France by S.A.S.U. Ecurie Des Moneaux, Sottsass is a half-brother to Sistercharlie, the 2018 Eclipse Award winner for champion turf female, who is also campaigned by Brant. Sistercharlie is a contender for this year's Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf.

Third Foret For Fastnet Rock’s One Master

Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) may have come up short in her history bid on Sunday, but ParisLongchamp was still able to host a ground-breaking mare as One Master (GB) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) brought up an unprecedented third victory in the G1 Qatar Prix de la Foret. Covered up early by Pierre-Charles Boudot as Godolphin’s 7-5 favourite Earthlight (Ire) (Shamardal) took the bull by the horns after the first two furlongs, the 29-10 second favourite was launched a furlong out to reel in that rival in a frantic final 50 metres and register the landmark win by a short-neck as Safe Voyage (Ire) (Fast Company {Ire}) made it three seven-furlongs specialists in a line a short head behind in third. “She’s a fantastic filly and comes good over this track and trip,” trainer William Haggas said. “She was given another brilliant ride from Pierre-Charles and wants to win. She had to battle it out today, but she did it. The last horse to win two Forets was Moorestyle (GB), who was ridden by Maureen’s father and trained by her uncle, so this is very unique and I suspect it’ll take some beating. It’s a shame that the other mare couldn’t make it three on the day, but this is a good feat in itself. She looks after herself and we haven’t over-raced her and when you do that they repay you.”

First brought here in 2018 as a 33-1 shot, One Master had stall 15 to overcome on ground a touch livelier than she likes but in the early days of “PC” she was smuggled by another Godolphin runner in Inns of Court (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) to edge a short-head verdict. A year on, the bay had a kinder draw and the very soft ground she thrives on and was the relatively comfortable winner from City Light (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), having placed in the G1 Queen Anne S. and G1 Falmouth S. over a mile during the summer. Turned to six-furlong sprinting thereafter, she was second in the G1 Qipco British Champions Sprint S. at Ascot and sixth on her seasonal bow in the G1 Diamond Jubilee S. back there June 20 before heading back over further.

Arguably unlucky when beaten less than a length by Nazeef (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) when fourth under Boudot in the latest edition of the Falmouth July 10, the homebred was paired with Tom Marquand for her next three outings over this trip and got their partnership off to a flyer when defying a penalty with another of her late shows in Goodwood’s G3 Oak Tree S. July 31. Left behind by Safe Voyage when 3 1/2-lengths second to that rival in the Aug. 22 G2 City of York S., she was beaten in a bobbing finish by Wichita (Ire) (No Nay Never) in Doncaster’s G2 Park S. Sept. 12 but this was the day that mattered and she was produced brilliantly to pull off the rare achievement.

Again played late, it was her burst between the 300 and 100-metre mark that made the difference as Safe Voyage took time to wind up and Earthlight possibly paying for having to use up energy to get across from his wide draw and on to the lead. “She is very laid-back and easy to deal with and she knows how to race. I don’t know what it is about this time of year, but she seems to come good and we haven’t missed a beat this year. She’s run in every race we’ve wanted her to and I’m thrilled for everyone here. She’ll have another run, I suppose, if she’s okay and she’s in both races at Ascot over six and a mile and I quite fancy the Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland as she’s pretty nippy. I’ll have to speak to Roy and Gretchen, but I’m absolutely thrilled for them as they have been fantastic supporters of ours and they said straight after last year ‘let’s have another season in training’ so good for them.”

Godolphin’s Lisa-Jane Graffard said of the runner-up, who almost held off the mare in a pulsating finish. “Earthlight has run a super race. He was in such good form–you could see in the paddock that he was really happy to be at the races–and was almost a bit too well in himself. Mickael said that no-one else wanted to go on, so he found himself in front which may have cost him slightly in the dying strides. We can’t look for too many excuses, as he has been beaten by a mare who knows her way round Longchamp with her eyes closed. One Master is fantastic and connections have done a great job in bringing her back in peak form again. We are really pleased with Earthlight and Mickael felt that he fought hard all the way to the line.”

One Master’s dam is the smart sprinter Enticing (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), who captured the G3 Molecomb S. at two and Goodwood’s King George S. when it was staged as a group 3. Also the second dam of last year’s G3 Killavullan S. winner Stela Star (Ire) (Epaulette {Aus}) who was also runner-up in this season’s GIII Honeymoon S., she is a daughter of Superstar Leo (Ire) (College Chapel {GB}) who first brought European success to Lael Stable when landing the G2 Flying Childers S. and G2 Norfolk S. and finishing runner-up in the G1 Prix de l’Abbaye here and the G1 Phoenix S. Superstar Leo, whose other notable performer was the Listed Fleur de Lys S. scorer and G3 Jersey S. runner-up Sentaril (GB) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), is kin to Starship (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) who produced the G1 Racing Post Trophy hero Rivet (Ire) and the Hong Kong group 3 winner Out and About (Ire) from matings with One Master’s sire Fastnet Rock, as well as the G3 Gallinule S. winner Alexander Pope (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}). This is also the family of the G1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains third San Donato (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), the G1 Turnbull S. winner December Draw (Ire) (Medecis {GB}) and the Guineas-winning sires Footstepsinthesand (GB) and Power (GB). Enticing’s as-yet unraced 3-year-old colt by Kodiac (GB) is named Craved (GB), while she also has the once-raced 2-year-old filly winner by the same sire named Arousing (GB) and a foal full-brother to One Master.
