Caravaggio Moves From Ireland To Ashford Stud For 2021

Scat Daddy's Royal Ascot superstar Caravaggio has been relocated from Coolmore's headquarters in Ireland to our American base at Ashford Stud.

“Ever since he retired to stud, Caravaggio has been supported by top American-based breeders such as David Anderson, Peter Berglar, John Gunther, Hunter Valley Farm, Runnymede Farm, Fred Hertrich, Mike Ryan, e5 Racing & Merriebelle Stables,” said Ashford's director of sales Charlie O'Connor, who co-bred the crack sprinter with his father-in-law's Windmill Manor Farms.

“This support carried into the sales ring in both the U.S. and Europe with several of his highest-priced yearlings being bought by American-based owners including Peter Brant's White Birch Farm, Wesley Ward, Ben McElroy, Susan Moulton, DJ Stables, Mike Akers and Meah/Lloyd for Calvin Nguyen. These included a $400,000 filly and a $300,000 colt sold by Gainesway at Keeneland.”

“A multiple Group 1 winner, Caravaggio is an outstanding physical and was a fantastic racehorse going unbeaten in his first six starts which included Royal Ascot wins at both two and three. His pedigree holds major appeal for breeders here being a son of Scat Daddy, one of the most successful stallions we've ever stood at Ashford, and out of a stakes winner on dirt by Holy Bull. His half-sister My Jen was a good racemare too winning a Grade 2 on the main track at Belmont for Eddie Kenneally. All in all, we thought it made a lot of sense to bring him over.”

Caravaggio stood his first two seasons at €35,000 increasing to €40,000 in 2020. He will stand at $25,000 for 2021 and is available for inspection at Ashford.

Caravaggio Relocated to Coolmore America

Scat Daddy’s Royal Ascot superstar Caravaggio has been relocated from Coolmore’s headquarters in Ireland to its American base at Ashford Stud, Coolmore announced Thursday.

“Ever since he retired to stud, Caravaggio has been supported by top [North] American-based breeders such as David Anderson, Peter Berglar, John Gunther, Hunter Valley Farm, Runnymede Farm, Fred Hertrich, Mike Ryan, e5 Racing & Merriebelle Stables,” said Ashford’s Director of Sales Charlie O’Connor, who co-bred the MG1SW sprinter with his father-in-law’s Windmill Manor Farms. “This support carried into the sales ring in both the U.S. and Europe with several of his highest-priced yearlings being bought by American-based owners including Peter Brant’s White Birch Farm, Wesley Ward, Ben McElroy, Susan Moulton, DJ Stables, Mike Akers and Meah/Lloyd for Calvin Nguyen. These included a $400,000 filly and a $300,000 colt sold by Gainesway at Keeneland.”

Winner of the Group 1 Phoenix S. in Ireland and G2 Coventry S. at Royal Ascot as a juvenile, the gray son of American stakes winner Mekko Hokte (Holy Bull) added a score in the G1 Commonwealth Cup S. back at Ascot the following summer.

“A multiple Group 1 winner, Caravaggio is an outstanding physical and was a fantastic racehorse, going unbeaten in his first six starts which included Royal Ascot wins at both two and three,” said O’Connor. “His pedigree holds major appeal for breeders here being a son of Scat Daddy, one of the most successful stallions we’ve ever stood at Ashford, and out of a stakes winner on dirt by Holy Bull. His half-sister My Jen was a good racemare too, winning a Grade II on the main track at Belmont for Eddie Kenneally. All in all, we thought it made a lot of sense to bring him over.”

Caravaggio stood his first two seasons at €35,000 and was increased to €40,000 in 2020. He will stand at $25,000 for 2021 and is available for inspection at Ashford.

Siyouni’s Etoile Holds On in E. P. Taylor

Etoile, a beaten favorite in her two prior North American starts after being transferred to Chad Brown, came through with a victory in Sunday’s GI E.P. Taylor S. at Woodbine, giving red-hot Siyouni (Fr) another top-level success in the same Peter Brant colors as that stallion’s G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe hero Sottsass (Fr).

Two-for-two to open her account for Jean-Claude Rouget last winter at Cagnes-sur-Mer, the bay was a neck runner-up in Longchamp’s G3 Prix Vanteaux before annexing the G3 Prix Cleopatre at Saint-Cloud. A close fourth in the G1 Prix de Diane Longines at Chantilly, she was off the board in her last two French outings and disappointed when eighth at 17-10 in the GI Gamely S. May 20 after being bought for over $1 million at Tattersalls December. Second in the local GII Dance Smartly S. Aug. 15, she was made one of three 5-2 chances here and tracked from third past soft splits of :26.44 and :51.03. Moving up a spot as the pace quickened a touch through three-quarters in 1:15.50, she drew on even terms past the five-sixteenths and drifted wide off the turn. Blowing by tiring pacesetter Theodora B. outside the furlong grounds, she kicked clear before just holding 41-1 bomber Court Return on the wire.

“It was a good trip,” said local winning rider Rafael Hernandez, who was riding his meet-leading 12th stakes winner. “I called Chad this morning and he told me, ‘Raffi, try to get a good trip like last time. Just make sure you clear down the stretch. He told me he’d been working the horse a few times and he put her outside of other horses, and she’d been finishing great. I heard that other horse coming late but I wish she was coming closer. It was too far out so my horse couldn’t see. That’s why I switched the whip to the left, to try to get her out and get her attention. But we did it.”

Pedigree Notes:

Etoile becomes the 43rd stakes winner, 24th graded stakes winner and sixth Grade I/Group 1 scorer for Aga Khan Studs’ Siyouni. She is his first North American Grade I winner. Her third dam Navratilovna was a GSW in France. Her dam has a juvenile filly by Lethal Force (Ire) named Arletta (Fr) and a yearling Dabirsim (Fr) filly.

Galileo’s Bolshoi Ballet Earns Rising Star Tag at Leopardstown

Coolmore’s Bolshoi Ballet (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who hit the board going one mile in his Oct. 3 debut at Newmarket last time, was sharply into stride and led from the outset of Friday’s Irish Stallion Farms EBF (C&G) Maiden at Leopardstown. Holding sway throughout the one-mile test, the even-money favourite was shaken up when threatened in early straight and powered clear under continued urging inside the final furlong to prevail by an impressive four lengths from O’Reilly (Fr) (Frankel {GB}), adding ‘TDN Rising Star’ status into the bargain.

“I fancied him in Newmarket, but he was too green that day,” explained winning rider Seamus Heffernan. “Ryan [Moore] said he liked him and that he’d be very hard to beat next time he ran. He was whinnying going to the start and, as I was going to make the running, I thought [racing with] company is a bit better. When I had company it worked and when I let him go he quickened really well. He’s from a good family and he’s a good mover. He has a big future.”

Full to MG1SP G2 Sandown Classic victor Southern France (Ire), Bolshoi Ballet is out of an unraced half-sister to MGSP Listed Prix Rose de Mai victress Aubergade (Fr) (Kaldoun {Fr}) and GSW G1 Prix de Diane runner-up Abbatiale (Fr) (Kaldoun {Fr}), whose own black-type descendants include last month’s G1 Moyglare Stud S. third Oodnadatta (Ire) (Australia {GB}). The April-foaled bay is also full to the dam of GII Miss Grillo S, third Editor At Large (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) and his dam Alta Anna (Fr) (Anabaa) has a weanling filly by No Nay Never to come.
