Australia’s Broome Extends Tally In the Mooresbridge

Providing Aidan O'Brien with a 12th renewal of The Curragh's G2 Coolmore Sottsass Irish EBF Mooresbridge S. on Monday, Broome (Ire) (Australia {GB}) continued his own success story with a third black-type win in 2021. Having taken the Listed Devoy S. at Naas Mar. 28 and the Apr. 17 G3 Alleged S. over this track and 10-furlong trip, the 4-9 favourite was forwardly placed in second by Ryan Moore and ridden to take command approaching the last two furlongs. Pressed by Helvic Dream (Ire) (Power {GB}) from there, he kept finding to earn a two-length success, with the returning G1 Melbourne Cup hero Twilight Payment (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) 4 1/2 lengths away in third.

While he is not one of Ballydoyle's flashiest stars, Broome is one of those admirable back-up horses that the major stables need and is very strong at this level. “He's a lovely horse and he's come back very well this year,” Ryan Moore said. “There is plenty left in there and he kind of played with them to be honest. He's unbeaten at ten, but I do think he'll get further. He's only had a couple of goes at group 1 company and has been fourth on two occasions, so he's entitled to have another go.”

Broome is out of the speedy Listed National S. scorer and G3 Princess Margaret S. and GIII Appalachian S.-placed Sweepstake (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), whose dam is a full-sister to the G3 Prix de la Nonette winner Dust Dancer (GB). She in turn produced the GII Lake Placid H. scorer Spotlight (GB) (Dr Fong), herself responsible for the G3 Bengough S. winner Projection (GB) (Acclamation {GB}) and for the dam of last year's G1 St Leger runner-up Berkshire Rocco (Fr) (Sir Percy {GB}). Dust Dancer is also the second dam of the G1 Phoenix S.-winning Zoffany (Ire) (Dansili {GB}) who posthumously had his first Classic winner on Sunday and his G2 Futurity S.-winning and G1 Irish Derby-placed half-brother Rostropovich (Ire) (Frankel {GB}). This is also the family of the G3 Fred Darling S. scorer Bulaxie (GB) (Bustino {GB}), her G2 Premio Lydia Tesio-winning daughter Claxon (GB) (Caerleon) and her daughter Cassydora (GB) (Darshaan {GB}) who took the GIII Hillsborough S. and was runner-up in G1 Nassau S. Sweepstake's as-yet unnamed 2-year-old is a full-brother to Broome, while she also has a yearling filly by Lope de Vega (Ire).

Bloodlines: As Time Goes By Extends The Legacy Of Take Charge Lady A Little Longer

Victory in the Grade 2 Santa Margarita at Santa Anita on Saturday, April 24, made As Time Goes By (by American Pharoah) the third graded stakes winner from her dam, Take Charge Lady.

The 4-year-old filly was making only her sixth start, and in her previous race and stakes debut, As Time Goes By had finished second in the G1 Beholder Mile to 2020 champion 3-year-old filly Swiss Skydiver (Daredevil).

A May 22 foal, As Time Goes By was not raced at two, then was brought along patiently by trainer Bob Baffert. The filly made her debut at Del Mar on Aug. 22 last year, and she won her first race in her third start, a maiden special on Dec. 13 at Los Alamitos over six furlongs. Leading from the half-mile (in :45.39), As Time Goes By drew off by 4 lengths to win in 1:09.01.

From three subsequent starts, all in 2021, As Time Goes By has won an allowance by 9 lengths, was second by 2 3/4 lengths to Swiss Skydiver in the Beholder, then won the Santa Margarita.

The last of 10 foals out of the dam, Broodmare of the Year Take Charge Lady, As Time Goes By is her dam's eighth winner and joined her older siblings Take Charge Indy (A.P. Indy) and Will Take Charge (Unbridled's Song) as graded winners. Take Charge Lady had won at the premier level three times (Ashland and two runnings of the Spinster), and her first stakes winner was Take Charge Indy, who won the 2012 G1 Florida Derby. The mare's second stakes winner came the following year with Will Take Charge, who won the G1 Travers and Clark, and also was second in the Breeders' Cup Classic to cinch the 2013 Eclipse Award as champion 3-year-old colt.

Bred in Kentucky by Orpendale and Chelston, As Time Goes By is by 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile) and is the 15th stakes winner for her sire. From American Pharoah's first crop, As Time Goes By is the 13th stakes winner from the stallion's first crop.

Although several stakes winners by American Pharoah won stakes during their juvenile season, including Four Wheel Drive, winner of the G2 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint, the improvement seen from such as Harvey's Lil Goil (G1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes) and Pista (G2 Park Hill Stakes) seems to have inclined owners and trainers to wait with more of them.

In addition to As Time Goes By, some who are continuing to improve at four include Merneith, winner of the G2 Santa Monica on Feb. 13, and Café Pharoah, winner of the G1 February Stakes at Tokyo eight days later.

The latter is generally regarded as the best dirt horse in Japan, and it is notable that all three of these recent stakes winners have shown their best form on dirt. The early stakes winners by the Triple Crown winner had shown an unexpected affinity for turf, but the overall record for the sire is now trending strongly toward versatility, rather than a surprising specialization.

A big, scopey filly who has clearly made significant progress and strengthened, As Time Goes By adds a further layer of quality to a filly and mare division that is remarkable for depth with champions Swiss Skydiver, Monomoy Girl (Tapizar), Gamine (Into Mischief), and Letruska (Super Saver), as well as last season's Kentucky Oaks winner Shedaresthedevil (Daredevil).

In the event that As Time Goes By should add a victory in a G1 to her stakes successes, that would make her dam one of the few to produce three G1 winners.

There will not be more, however.

As Time Goes By is the last foal and sixth daughter out of 2013 Broodmare of the Year Take Charge Lady. A $175,000 select yearling at Fasig-Tipton Kentucky's July sale, Take Charge Lady earned more than $2.4 million at the races, winning a trio of Grade 1s and the Alcibiades Stakes, which now also shares that premium designation. The mare was sold at the 2004 Keeneland November sale for $4.2 million while carrying her first foal, Charming (Seeking the Gold), and Charming went through the ring two years later for $3.2 million at the Keeneland September yearling auction.

Like her famous dam, Charming has produced two Grade 1 winners. She is the dam of the 2014 Eclipse Award champion 2-year-old filly Take Charge Brandi (Giant's Causeway), winner of the BC Juvenile Fillies and the Hollywood Starlet, and of three-time Grade 1 stakes winner (Arkansas Derby, Malibu, Santa Anita Sprint Championship) Omaha Beach (War Front), now a stallion at Spendthrift Farm.

In 2021, Charming will be bred to American Pharoah.

American Pharoah, Justify To Shuttle To Coolmore Australia For 2021 Southern Hemisphere Breeding Season

The Coolmore Australia stallion roster for 2021 sees the introduction of one of the very best proven sires in Europe and one of the very best 2-year-olds in Australia.

Wootton Bassett – with a first crop of only 23 foals conceived at a fee of just €6,000 – exploded on the sire scene courtesy of son Almanzor, triple Group 1-winning champion of his generation, whose first Australasian yearlings this year proved a great hit with buyers.

Wootton Bassett has also sired the likes of dual Group 1-winning filly Audarya, conceived at a fee of only €4,000, and Group 1 Prix de l'Abbaye (1000m.) winning colt Wooded, from a €6,000 fee, while his 2-year-old crop of last year included Group 2 winner and 2,000 Guineas candidate Chindit.

In such esteem is Wootton Bassett held that in Europe he currently commands a fee of €100,000 (AUS$155,000), highlighting the great value he affords Australian breeders at his introductory fee of only AUS$71,500.

King's Legacy needs little introduction, winner as he was last year of both the Group 1 Sires' Produce and Group 1 Champagne Stakes. The most accomplished juvenile of his generation, with the impeccable good looks to cost AUS$1,400,000 as a yearling, he is also the only son of Redoute's Choice ever to win multiple Group 1 races at two. Closely related to Not A Single Doubt, from the family of successful sire Snippets, King's Legacy will stand his first season at a fee of AUS$33,000.

Second TDN Rising Star For Caravaggio

Another Caravaggio, another TDN Rising Star as the highly impressive Contarelli Chapel (Ire) made her mark in a smart-looking field gathered for the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden over near six furlongs at Naas on Monday. A half-sister to last year's G1 Prix de Diane and G1 Nassau S. heroine Fancy Blue (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), the January-foaled grey who races for Westerberg, Magnier, Tabor and Smith was marginally in front from the break and completely comfortable setting the pace under a motionless Ryan Moore. It was passing the two-furlong pole that Ballydoyle's 6-4 favourite really began to show her class and despite running green in the clear she was able to put 5 1/2 lengths between her and Juddmonte's Juncture (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}), the well-regarded Ger Lyons-trained homebred. There was a neck between that relative of Promising Lead (GB) (Danehill) and Visit (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and the experienced Bolger homebred Freedom of Speech (Ire) (Australia {GB}) in what should prove a maiden worth following.

Aidan O'Brien already has the TDN Rising Star Tenebrism by Coolmore's first-season sire and it may be that he has to keep her and Contarelli Chapel apart. “She was never let off the bridle at home and we knew that she would be very green when he did drop her, but she was very impressive,” he said. “I would imagine she is an [June 18 G3] Albany-type filly. She might come back here [for the May 16] before that.”

From a pedigree point of view, Contarelli Chapel ticks all the boxes, as they say. Her dam Chenchikova (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), who had the speed to be fourth in the G3 Park Express S. over a mile in 2006, is a full-sister to the Ballydoyle luminary High Chaparral (Ire) and less-heralded but nevertheless smart Black Bear Island (Ire). A granddaughter of the French champion Kozana (GB) (Kris {GB}), she has produced a quartet of black-type performers with the aforementioned Fancy Blue clear best, G1SW-Eng, G1SW-Fr, SW & MG1SP-Ire, $741,195. Her others are this stable's G1 Dewhurst S. third Smuggler's Cove (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), SW-Ire, G1SP-Eng, $137,682, and his useful full-brothers Casterton (Ire), MSW & GSP-Fr, $163,024, and Fastnet Cyclone (Ire), SP-Aus, $212,185.
