Influential Producer Cassandra Go Dies

Cassandra Go (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}-Rahaam, by Secreto), the winner of the G2 King's Stand S. and an influential producer, has died aged 25 at Ballyhimikin Stud.

Bred by John McKay, Cassandra Go was purchased by Trevor Stewart for 82,000gns as a foal through the BBA at the Tattersalls December Sale of 1996. Stewart sent her through the ring as a yearling at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, but opted to retain her at 200,000gns.

Sent into training with Geoff Wragg, Cassandra Go was soundly beaten in her lone start at two but righted that wrong with a first-out maiden victory the following April. She would win a Newmarket conditions race and picked up a listed third before the season's end, and she proved progressive at four, picking up stakes wins in the Listed Lansdown Fillies' S. and the G3 King George S. It was at five, however, that Cassandra Go truly thrived, winning the G2 Temple S. and G2 King's Stand S. before finishing second in the G1 July Cup.

Cassandra Go had been covered by Green Desert prior to her final season on the racecourse, and as a half-sister to G3 Coventry S. winner Verglas (Ire) (Highest Honor {Fr}), expectations must have been high heading into her second career. Cassandra Go more than delivered.

Her first foal, the Green Desert mare Neverletme Go (Ire), produced the German stakes-winning Best Regards (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}), but that has been relegated to a footnote in what is a highly accomplished and sought-after line. Cassandro Go's third foal was the G3 Summer S. winner Theann (GB) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}), who would subsequently produce the dual American Grade I winner Photo Call (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and the G2 Richmond S. winner and young sire Land Force (Ire) (No Nay Never).

Theann was followed immediately by Halfway To Heaven (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), who has overshadowed even her elder sister's lofty accomplishments. The winner of the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas, G1 Sun Chariot S. and G1 Nassau S., Halfway To Heaven has gone on to even greater acclaim as a producer; after first supplying the Group 3-winning Flying The Flag (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and the G1 Fillies' Mile, G1 Lockinge S. and G1 Prix de l'Opera victress Rhododendron (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), she outdid herself with the remarkable six-time Group 1 winner Magical (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

Theann and Halfway To Heaven were both plucked out of Goffs yearling sales by the Coolmore partners, and that group likewise took home Cassandro Go's most recent filly to appear at public auction, the subsequently Group 3-placed Invincible Spirit (Ire) filly Fantasy (Ire) for 1.6-million gns from the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale in 2017. In the interim, Cassandro Go had produced the filly Tickled Pink (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), who was retained by Stewart and won the G3 Abernant S. and G3 Coral Charge S. for trainer Sir Henry Cecil-one of the great trainer's last stakes winners prior to his death–and Stewart told The Owner Breeder he has four of Cassandra Go's daughters in his care. Those include the 3-year-old Holly Golightly (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}), the winner of a Gowran Park maiden last month for trainer Ger Lyons, and a filly foal by Night Of Thunder born this year. Stewart also retained the mare's 2-year-old colt Once Upon A River (Ire), who was third on debut at Gowran on June 13 for Lyons. Cassandra Go has a yearling colt by Saxon Warrior (Jpn).

Golden Pal Acquired By Coolmore, To Target Nunthorpe

Golden Pal (Uncle Mo), front-running winner of the 2020 GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint for his breeder Randall Lowe, has been purchased by Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith and Westerberg, a Coolmore official confirmed Wednesday.

The first foal out of Lowe's outstanding 11-time stakes winner Lady Shipman (Midshipman), Golden Pal was bought back on a bid of $325,000 at the 2019 Keeneland September sale and was runner-up on debut over the Gulfstream main track last April before missing by a neck to The Lir Jet (Ire) (Prince of Lir {Ire}) in the G2 Norfolk S. at Royal Ascot in June. The Florida-bred bested his stablemate Fauci (Malibu Moon) to graduate in the Skidmore S. at Saratoga in August and validated 4-5 favoritism in the Juvenile Turf Sprint, scoring by 3/4 of a length at Keeneland last November.

The decision to sell Golden Lad was not taken lightly, Lowe said.

“It was very hard,” he admitted. “I've been in this business now for 36 years. To go from the very bottom to come all the way to the top and then finally win the Breeders' Cup, it made it very hard. But I wasn't going to be the one to try to repeat with another horse and spend millions upon millions of dollars without finding a top horse again. He's going to run three or four times this year and then head to the breeding shed. This sale comes at the right time and at the right price.”

All is not lost, however, as Lowe retains ownership of Lady Shipman, narrowly runner-up in the 2015 GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint, and her colt foal by Omaha Beach named Lieutenant General. Lowe also owns a pair of breeding rights in Golden Pal upon his retirement.

“Before she ran in the Breeders' Cup, I had an offer on the table for $3.5 million,” Lowe said of Lady Shipman. “People thought I had lost my mind for not selling her before the Breeders' Cup, but I told everyone, 'I've gotten this far with her and I honestly believe enough in her that I think we have a legitimate chance to win the Breeders' Cup.' And she got beat a bob. People have been trying to purchase her from me and I said, 'If we can't win the Breeders' Cup with her, we'll win it with one of her kids,' and we were right.”

Lowe reports that Lady Shipman is currently back in foal to Uncle Mo

Golden Pal is currently in training with Wesley Ward at Churchill Downs, where he breezed five furlongs in an easy 1:02.20 over a firm turf course June 20. Ward is pointing the bay towards a seasonal reappearance in the $120,000 Quick Call S. on opening day of the Saratoga meeting July 15 as a stepping-stone to the G1 Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe S. at York Aug. 20. Golden Pal was an intended runner for last year's Nunthorpe, but the threat of wet weather scuppered those plans and he was rerouted for the Skidmore.

The Ward-trained and Coolmore-owned filly Acapulco (Scat Daddy) won the 2015 G2 Queen Mary S. at the Royal meeting and made the running in the Nunthorpe before finishing second as the 8-5 favorite.

Eclipse Target For St Mark’s Basilica

Dual French Classic winner St Mark's Basilica (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) looks unlikely to have a rematch this summer with Poetic Flare (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}), with St Mark's Basilica set to target 10-furlong features like the July 3 G1 Eclipse S., Aug. 18 G1 Juddmonte International and Sept. 11 G1 Irish Champion S.

The Coolmore partners' St Mark's Basilica has gone unbeaten in three runs since taking last year's G1 Dewhurst S., adding the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains over a mile on May 16 and stepping up to 10.5 furlongs to take the G1 Prix du Jockey Club three weeks later. He had the G1 2000 Guineas winner Poetic Flare back in sixth in the Poulains, and that colt's owner/breeder/trainer Jim Bolger indicated after Poetic Flare's latest win in the G1 St James's Palace S. at Royal Ascot that the colt would stick to a mile for races like the G1 Sussex S. and G1 Prix Jacques le Marois this summer.

“St Mark's is in the mix for the Eclipse; something like that will be the plan for him,” said trainer Aidan O'Brien. “I'd have thought the Eclipse, the Juddmonte and the Irish Champion are all the races we'll be looking at for him. I think at the moment we're happy to keep him at 10 furlongs, but obviously he could drop back. I think that's the sort of plan we're thinking of at the moment.”

O'Brien also provided an update on last week's G1 Prince Of Wales's S. winner Love (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Last year's champion 3-year-old filly could meet St Mark's Basilica over 10 furlongs this summer, but also has options over 12 furlongs including the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. and the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

“Love is good. We're happy with her,” said O'Brien. “Obviously she's done very little since Wednesday, she's only back cantering again now, but we're very happy with her. To do that after a long break, we were delighted. She hadn't had a run since the Yorkshire Oaks so we were delighted. Anything over 10 furlongs or a mile and a half is her all over. She's in the mix for all those types of races now, anything over that trip. It's great to have her started again and now we can look at all those races.”

Galileo’s Joan Of Arc Prevails In The Diane

Things may not have gone to plan in all of the English Classics for Ballydoyle so far in 2021, but the stable continued their charmed existence in France on Sunday as Joan of Arc (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) provided Classic number three for the season and a first renewal of Chantilly's G1 Prix de Diane Longines for Aidan O'Brien. Combining again with Ioritz Mendizabal, who had steered St Mark's Basilica (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) to glory in the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains and G1 Prix du Jockey Club, the master of Rosegreen had the full-sister to the Classic-winning pair Gleneagles (Ire) and Marvellous (Ire) at concert pitch for the 10 1/2-furlong feature. Drawn favourably in five, the 53-10 shot who was touched off by Empress Josephine (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas at The Curragh May 23 made full use of that position to shadow the early leader Sibila Spain (Ire) (Frankel {GB}). Working hard up the straight, she took until the last 50 metres to subdue that TDN Rising Star and assert for a 3/4-of-a-length verdict over the Andre Fabre duo of Philomene (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Burgarita (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}). Philomene, who was sent off the 10-3 favourite, finished strongly from behind to deny her stablemate by a short head, as Sibila Spain felt the pinch late to slip back to fourth, half a length further behind. “When I talked to Aidan he was pretty confident she would run a great race and that the longer trip would suit her very well,” the winning rider said. “He asked me to ride her like the winner of the Jockey Club and that is what I did. We had an excellent trip and she quickened very nicely. Three hundred metres from the finish, I wasn't sure we'd win but she's done it easily in the end. She will stay further and it may be that a mile and a half is even better for her.”

Denied a debut win by a short head over seven furlongs at Dundalk in November, Joan of Arc was off the mark in testing conditions over that trip at The Curragh Mar. 21 before finishing sixth when stablemate Empress Josephine was 10th in the G3 Ballylinch Stud 1000 Guineas Trial again over that distance at Leopardstown Apr. 11. Heading back to the latter venue and moving up to a mile for the G3 Irish 1000 Guineas Trial, the bay made all before losing out by a short head in the shade of the post in the Irish Guineas. This was as straightforward as it gets in a Chantilly Classic, with Mendizabal encountering no traffic issues and an ideal lead from the Christopher Head trainee who was unpressured on the front end.

As they sauntered past the chateau, Burgarita was allowed to tank down the outer to gain a more prominent position but little else had changed since the outset. In early straight, it looked as if Aurelien Lemaitre had the race in hand on the smooth-travelling 13-1 shot Sibila Spain, with Joan of Arc beginning to work along with Burgarita and TDN Rising Star Harajuku (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) another Fabre representative in the firing line. As the leader began to falter in the last 100 metres, Joan of Arc found another surge and that was decisive as Philomene lunged too late having had three lengths to make up from the top of the lane.

“Aidan O'Brien is my Santa Claus! He has given me two superb horses to ride in recent weeks,” Mendizabal quipped. “He gave me some simple instructions, but when the horses are as good as that, it's easy. All this success is a direct result of the hard work put in at home and for me to be working with the Aiden O'Brien team is just incredible.” Aidan O'Brien's record is now complete, with this victory meaning that he has trained the winner of every British, Irish and French Classic and he said, “I'm delighted, even more so because she was bred at home by John and Susan Magnier. Ioritz gave her a super ride. This is a race we have tried to win many times, but it is not easy to win. According to Ioritz, she shouldn't have a problem stepping up to a mile and a half. The [G1] Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe could therefore be a possibility for her. We have a lot of very good three-year-olds this year, it's very exciting.”

Philomene was emulating her half-sister Chicquita (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}), who was runner-up to Treve (Fr) (Motivator {GB}) in 2013, and Godolphin's Lisa-Jane Graffard said, “We are delighted with Philomene's run and couldn't be prouder of her effort. She has justified the belief that everyone has always had and Andre Fabre feels that stepping up to 12 furlongs will be ideal for her. She comes from a family that improves with age. I think she looked better in the paddock today and I think that she will come on again for that. We have always loved her. She comes from a very good pedigree and she is also very beautiful, so we are very lucky to have her.”

Maxime Guyon, who was to ride four winners on the card, said of Burgarita, “For just her third race, that was a magnificent performance. She still isn't quite hardened but that will come with time, she has run excellently today.” Christopher Head said of Sibila Spain, “She's run a blinder and it was the right decision to supplement her. She did what we expected her to do and we have no complaints. Today we have really seen her quality at the top level. It is very reassuring, especially as she still has the capacity to progress, not forgetting that she didn't run as a two-year-old. The fact we were drawn on the wide outside may have gone against us, especially in the closing stages. As for the future, we will have a chat with her owners. You always want to win,
but even still, fourth in a race like this is excellent.”

Joan of Arc becomes the fourth group 1 winner for the incredible You'resothrilling (Storm Cat), the G2 Cherry Hinton S.-winning full-sister to the Iron Horse Giant's Causeway. Every foal–which are all by Galileo–she has produced thus far has achieved at least a placing at the highest level, with the aforementioned Gleneagles annexing the G1 English and Irish 2000 Guineas, G1 St James's Palace S. and G1 Goffs Vincent O'Brien National S. and Marvellous taking the Irish 1000 Guineas. Happily (Ire) was successful in the G1 Moyglare Stud S. and G1 Grand Criterium and fourth in this three years ago, Taj Mahal (Ire) captured two editions of the G2 Sandown Classic and was runner-up in the GI Secretariat S., Coolmore (Ire) took the G3 C L & M F Weld Park S. and was third in the GI Belmont Oaks Invitational, and Vatican City (Ire)–the only one not to score in group company–was second in last year's G1 Irish 2000 Guineas.

You'resothrilling, who also has an as-yet unnamed 2-year-old full-sister to them all named Toy (Ire), is also a full-sibling of Pearling, the dam of the G1 Irish Champion S. hero and first-season sire Decorated Knight (Ire) also by Galileo. They are out of the six-times graded-stakes winner Mariah's Storm (Rahy), whose eight stakes performers include Giant's Causeway's full-brothers and sires Tumblebrutus and Freud and Galileo's Butterflies (Ire) who was second in the G3 Munster Oaks and third in the G3 Flame of Tara S. and is now the dam of this year's TDN Rising Star Yet (War Front). You'resothrilling and Pearling were the first two fillies produced by Mariah's Storm, with the next being the unraced Love Me Only (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) who also did her part for the family by throwing the G2 Great Voltigeur S. winner, G1 Irish Derby runner-up and G1 Epsom Derby third Storm the Stars (Sea the Stars {Ire}). Another of Mariah's Storm's unraced daughters Fabulous (Ire) by Galileo is responsible for Thinking of You (American Pharoah), who was third behind Joan of Arc in the G3 Irish 1000 Guineas Trial.
