High Definition to Improve From Dante

Erstwhile G1 Cazoo Derby hopeful High Definition (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) has emerged from his third-place run in the G2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante S. in good order. Trainer Aidan O'Brien is expecting more improvement from the previously unbeaten G2 Beresford S. victor. The colt had turned in unsatisfactory bloodwork earlier this month which had ruled him out of a start in the Lingfield Derby Trial and instead had seen him re-directed to the Knavesmire.

“High Definition is in good form,” said Aidan O'Brien of the Coolmore parterns/Westerberg runner. “He hasn't done much since York. I was very happy. Four days before he wasn't going to run and he'll come forward plenty.

“We always give them 10 days to two weeks to get back into full work and then see where they are. Ryan [Moore] was very happy with him. The pace died a bit in the middle and it might have suited if it had stayed strong.”

O'Brien stablemate and impressive G3 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial S. winner Bolshoi Ballet (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) is currently favoured in the G1 Cazoo Derby markets.

O’Brien’s Stars in Good Form for 2021 Campaigns

Group 2 winner High Definition (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) is doing well in advance of the 2021 Classics, however he is most likely to contest the G1 Epsom Derby instead of the G1 2000 Guineas, his trainer Aidan O'Brien revealed. A winner at The Curragh in August, the bay next took the G2 Beresford S. on Sept. 26 in good style. The decision was made to save him for his 3-year-old year instead of pressing on to juvenile Group 1s.

“He's a big, rangy horse with an unbelievably long stride,” O'Brien said via a Zoom call during the European 2-year-old classification press conference. “He's uncomplicated and has a good mind and has done very well over the winter. In the Beresford it looked like he couldn't win for most of the race as on the round track at The Curragh it's tough to make up ground. It looked like he couldn't win a furlong down, he had a chance half a furlong down and won very easy at the line.

“At the moment he'd probably be a shorter price to go to a Derby trial than the Guineas, but the lads will make a decision and see what they want to do. The Guineas is obviously a great trial for the Derby, but when we have other horses there for the Guineas, it's very possibly that High Definition might go to a Derby trial. He might only have one run before the Derby if he was doing that, I think.”

Freshly anointed European Champion 2-Year-Old St Mark's Basilica (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), who beat Wembley (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G1 Dewhurst S. and G1 Criterium International victor Van Gogh (American Pharoah) are also all major Ballydoyle contenders for the 2000 Guineas.

“The year was really a mess,” said the Ballydoyle handler. “With St Mark's Basilica, we kind of rushed him out to get a run into him and then rushed him back to run in the Heinz [Phoenix S.]. It was all just happening too quick for him and he was on the back foot. In all fairness to him, he toughed it out and did man up.

“Wembley is another a horse we always liked. We thought he'd win at The Curragh first time and when he got to the front he was very green and babyish–he was like that a good bit. I suppose the form is open to question. Quite a lot of horses finished on top of each other, but Sir Mark's Basilica and Wembley are two solid horses that are tough and learned a lot last season.

“Van Gogh is a big horse who was always going to be a big 3-year-old–he could make an awful lot of improvement.”

Another standout colt for the Coolmore operation is Battleground (War Front), a son of the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe heroine Found (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). A winner of the Listed Chesham S. and G2 Vintage S., the bay's final juvenile run was a second in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf at Keeneland.

“He's a Guineas horse as well, like the other three, but it's very possible that if all of them are going to the Guineas, Battleground could go to Ascot and maybe have a run before, rather than them all going to the Guineas,” O'Brien continued.

“He's a lovely horse and Newmarket would suit him. I suppose it depends on how they're all going to fall, and obviously we'll have to look at the Irish Guineas and the French Guineas as well. The English Guineas is the first one, so I'd imagine he will be in the mix for that, along with the two Dewhurst horses and Van Gogh.

“Whether Battleground goes there or goes for an easier race and then goes for the St James's Palace–I suppose it will depend on how the spring is going with them all really.”

Love (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who won both the G1 1000 Guineas and G1 Oaks before adding the G1 Yorkshire Oaks to her haul, will most likely be seen in action in the summer to early fall. O'Brien noted that the going conditions dictate where the chestnut 4-year-old will appear for the Coolmore partners. She had been pencilled in to clash with Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) in the Arc before being scratched due to the ground and a trip to the Breeders' Cup was also under consideration before being tabled.

“She's very well and cantering away at the moment,” he said. “She will be ready for all those mile-and-a-quarter and mile-and-a-half races. She likes better ground and where she'll start, I suppose, will depend on that.

“There's the G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup at The Curragh, but we probably wouldn't go unless it was nice ground. She should be there for all those nice middle-distances races during the summer and into the autumn. Physically, she's done very well.”

G1SW Magic Wand Retired After Foot Abscess Rules Out Australian Start

Magic Wand (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}-Prudenzia {Ire}, by Dansili {GB}), a winner of the 2019 G1 Mackinnon S., has been retired from racing and will join Coolmore Stud’s broodmare band in Ireland next year, Coolmore Australia tweeted on Thursday morning. The 5-year-old was due to defend her title in the Mackinnon S., but was withdrawn with a foot abscess prior to the race.

“Following a foot abscess as she was preparing for a second tilt at the Mackinnon S., Magic Wand has been retired and will join our broodmare band in Ireland,” the stud tweeted. “She has been a wonderful mare for Coolmore and our partners and much loved by her strapper Yvonne.”

Bred by Ecurie des Monceaux and Skymarc Farm in Ireland, the daughter of French listed heroine Prudenzia brought €1.4 million to top the 2016 Arqana August Sale and join Aidan O’Brien’s string at Ballydoyle. A winner of the 2018 G2 Ribblesdale S. at Royal Ascot and Listed Cheshire Oaks, the bay rolled a pair of twos in the G1 Qatar Prix Vermeille and G1 Prix de l’Opera Longines prior to running fourth in the GI Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf to end her sophomore season.

Wheeled back in the GI Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational S. in January of 2019, she was second to subsequent U.S. Horse of the Year Bricks and Mortar (Giant’s Causeway). Her busy 2019 also included stops in Dubai and the UK (twice), as well as two other trips Stateside for a third in the GI Man o’War S. in May and another second to Bricks and Mortar in August’s GI Arlington Million S. She also made two journeys to Ireland for seconds in the G1 Pretty Polly S. in the summer and later in September the G1 Irish Champion S.

Despite all the travel, Magic Wand appeared to thrive and was making her ninth start of the year when fourth in last October’s G1 Cox Plate. Unplaced in the 2019 G1 Melbourne Cup, she claimed the Mackinnon just four days later on Nov. 9 for a thoroughly deserved Group 1 victory. The Aidan O’Brien trainee then missed by just a nose in the G1 Longines Hong Kong Cup in December.

After another second in the Pegasus World Cup Turf on Jan. 25, Magic Wand was unplaced in the inaugural $20-million Saudi Cup on dirt in February. Given four months on the bench, she saluted in the G2 Lanwades Stud S. on July 5. In three more 2020 starts in the UK and Ireland, her best performance was a fourth in the G1 Coral-Eclipse S. in July. The world traveler’s record stands at 28-4-9-2 and $4,702,433 in earnings.

A half-sister to Irish highweight and G1 Irish Oaks victress Chicquita (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) who made €600,000 at Arqana August in 2011 and later sold for €6 million at the 2013 Goffs November Breeding Stock Sale, Magic Wand is also a full-sister to the 4-year-old filly G3 Prix de Royaumont third Je Ne Regretterien (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), a €950,000 Arqana August yearling.

Her dam’s 2017 colt Enemy (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}) brought €420,000 two years ago at Arqana, while her 2018 Dubawi (Ire) filly Philomene (Ire) made €1.625 million last year. Her latest, a full-brother to Magic Wand, was her best sale yet. The colt was picked up by Coolmores MV Magnier for €2 million to top this year’s sale, which was incidentally held in September due to COVID-19.

Prudenzia is a half-sister to Wednesday’s Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale topper English King (Fr) (Camelot {GB}), who made 925,000gns and is en route to Australia, as well as GSW Pacifique (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}). Under the blue-blooded fourth dam Souk (Ire) (Ahonoora {GB}) are Irish highweight and G1 Epsom Oaks winner Alexandrova (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells), G1 Melbourne Cup hero Rekindling (GB) (High Chaparral {Ire}), G1 Cheveley Park S. scorer Magical Romance (Ire) (Barathea {Ire}), and the Classic-placed duo of Masterofthehorse (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells) and Golden Sword (GB) (High Chaparral {Ire}).

Classic Winner Sovereign Supplemented for Bahrain International Trophy

Sovereign (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), the 2019 G1 Irish Derby hero for Aidan O’Brien and the Coolmore partners, is a late supplement to the 2000-metre £500,000 Bahrain International Trophy on Nov. 20, the Rashid Equestrian & Horseracing Club announced on Wednesday. Also second in this term’s G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO S., Sovereign will be O’Brien’s first Bahraini runner.

“Sovereign is a strong mile and a quarter horse,” O’Brien told the Rashid Equestrian & Horseracing Club notes team. (Click here to view the interview.) “He is a very strong galloper who likes to go forward in his races and we think the Bahrain International Trophy will suit him. He is a big genuine, sound horse. He’s an Irish Derby winner. We saw what he did in the Irish Derby and he ran a massive race in the King George where he was second to Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}), so we think the race will suit him and we are looking forward to seeing him run.”

The supplementary stage closes on Nov. 3, with a max field of 14 allowed (12 Europeans and two Bahraini horses).
