Mating Plans: Bobby Flay

With the 2022 breeding season right around the corner, we will feature a series of breeders' mating plans over the coming weeks. Today we have owner/breeder, chef, and restaurateur Bobby Flay.

SUPER ESPRESSO (m, 15, Medaglia d'Oro–Amizette, by Forty Niner), to be bred to Not This Time

One of the hottest, proven sires of the new generation. Can infuse natural speed into this regally bred family of Courtly Dee.

TIZAHIT (m, 15, Tiznow–Never a No Hitter, by Kris S.), to be bred to Curlin

The mare has already produced a Grade I winner in Come Dancing (Malibu Moon). I'm hoping for another from one of the best sires of the last 30 years.

VERONIQUE (m, 11, Mizzen Mast–Styler, by Holy Bull), to be bred to Munnings

The dam of the track record-breaking speedster Nashville (Speightstown). Munnings has proven to provide powerful speed to his mares' progeny. Plus, it's the same nick as the Nashville mating.

WHITE HOT (IRE) (m, 9, Galileo {Ire}–Gwynn {Ire}, by Darshaan {GB}), to be bred to Into Mischief

The mare produced a Grade I-winning, Breeders' Cup champion in Pizza Bianca (Fastnet Rock {Aus}). It's easier to have lightning strike twice when you book a date with the current best sire on the continent. White Hot is a stunning mare, the highest-priced yearling filly [1,250,000gns at Tattersalls] in 2014 in the Western Hemisphere. She's by Galileo and is a three-quarter sister to English Derby champion Pour Moi (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}).

AMERICAN CAVIAR (m, 3, Curlin–America, by A.P. Indy), to be bred to Street Sense

The full-sister to graded stakes winner First Captain will visit one of the top proven stallions under $100,000.

AMAGANSETT (m, 5, Tapit–Twirl {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}), to be bred to Munnings

A Tapit mare from one of the best grass families in Europe. Munnings can provide potent influences on both surfaces.

AMERICA (m, 11, A.P. Indy–Lacadena, by Fasliyev), to be bred to Curlin

This mating created the winner of the GIII Dwyer S., First Captain, as a first foal. I'm looking forward to him adding to his resume as a 4-year-old in 2022. First Captain also topped the sale at Saratoga as a yearling ($1.5 million).

COVER SONG (m, 9, Fastnet Rock {Aus}–Misty For Me {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}), to be bred to Into Mischief

The graded stakes winner and half-sister to the likes of U S Navy Flag (War Front) and Roly Poly (War Front) deserves the best mate, so that date has been set.

DAME DOROTHY (m, 11, Bernardini–Vole Vole Monamour, by Woodman), to be bred to Curlin

Repeating the same mating for this Grade I winner as her first foal, GSW Spice Is Nice (Curlin), who also brought over $1 million as a yearling. Dame Dorothy's Uncle Mo yearling colt topped session 1 at Saratoga last summer, bringing $1.6 million from Robert and Lawana Low.

LIFE WELL LIVED (m, 15, Tiznow–Well Dressed, by Notebook), to be bred to Constitution

The dam of Grade I winner American Patriot (War Front) will visit a sire I believe will continue his rise to the top of charts in North America. He can get turf, dirt, long and short. The choice was made to continue the quality progeny this mare produces over and over.

SINGING SWEETLY (IRE) (m, 5, Galileo {Ire}–Sing Softly, by Hennessy), to be bred to Not This Time

A Galileo mare I bought a couple of years ago in France with a big American back family. I'm a big proponent of importing European blood and matching it with some American proven blood. The results? We'll have to wait and see on this one.

STREET STRUT (m, 9, Street Cry {Ire}-Lacadena, by Fasliyev), to be bred to Constitution

The half-sister to my successful broodmare America, who produced First Captain as her first foal, comes from the family of Better Than Honour (Deputy Minister) and Rags to Riches (A.P. Indy). This sire has a chance of filling his sire's footsteps. It's a bet I have a lot of confidence in making.

RUBY LIPS (m, 12, Hard Spun–Its a Ruby, by Rubiano), to be bred to Constitution

The dam of MGSW Lone Rock (Majestic Warrior) and the GI Kentucky Oaks trail filly Gerrymander (Into Mischief) deserves a proven quality sire. Constitution is the answer.

AULD ALLIANCE (Ire) (m, 12, Montjeu {Ire}–Highland Gift {Ire}, by Generous {Ire}), to be bred to Frankel (GB)

A very deep Ballymacoll Stud family with black-type dominating her page. This is my only mare in Europe. When you have the opportunity to flatter a mare with the number one stud in Europe you say, 'yes, please and thank you.' This will be her fourth Frankel foal.

Mating Plans: Coteau Grove Farms

With the 2022 breeding season right around the corner, we will feature a series of breeders' mating plans over the coming weeks. Today we have Andrew Cary, bloodstock agent for Coteau Grove Farms.

MISS HOT LEGS (m, 6, Verrazano–Expo Gold, by Johannesburg), to be bred to Medaglia d'Oro

Miss Hot Legs is one of our top mares. She's a stakes-placed three-quarter sister to the superstar Swiss Skydiver (Daredevil). We purchased her for $500,000 as a broodmare prospect at Keeneland November 2020.

Miss Hot Legs herself was a very fast and talented racemare in her own right and is a stunning physical. She was stakes-placed at Santa Anita and was only beaten a few lengths in a Grade II against the likes of Jolie Olimpica (Brz) and Oleksandra (Aus).

She is currently in foal to Curlin for her first foal and we felt that Medaglia d'Oro offered great value at $100,000 given what he has achieved during his legendary career. We are giving Miss Hot Legs every shot to get her broodmare career off to a good start with those first two covering sires.

ELFIN QUEEN (m, 5, American Pharoah–Pretty 'n Smart, by Beau Genius), to be bred to Into Mischief

Elfin Queen was acquired at the Keeneland November sale last year for $550,000, in foal to Justify. It's special to be able to buy a well-bred daughter of a Triple Crown winner, in foal to a Triple Crown winner. She was a $1.2-million yearling herself and is a half-sister to Grade I winner and promising young sire Cupid (Tapit). She broke her maiden by 6 1/2 lengths in Ireland for Aidan O'Brien and competed in stakes after that. We are giving her every shot by breeding her to Into Mischief. With her exceptional looks and pedigree, we have high hopes for Elfin Queen as a foundation mare for Coteau Grove for the next decade.

GOTTAHAVEAHOLIDAY (m, 8, Harlan's Holiday–Gottahaveadream, by Indian Charlie), to be bred to Constitution

Gottahaveaholiday is a three-quarter sister to Grade I winner Dayoutoftheoffice (Into Mischief), who recently sold for $2.85 million to Shadai Farm at Fasig-Tipton November. She herself was an expensive yearling and placed in maiden special weight company several times in New York. We acquired her for $240,000 as a broodmare prospect at Keeneland November 2020. She is a big, great-looking mare and is due any day for her first foal to Quality Road. We are huge fans of Constitution and feel that he is poised to become a perennial top-five sire in the years to come with what he has coming in the pipeline.

PLUS ONE (m, 13, Bluegrass Cat–License Free, by Miswaki), to be bred to Gun Runner

Plus One will always be a special mare to us, as she became our first Grade I producer when her son No Parole (Violence) won the GI Woody Stephens S. at Belmont Park in June of 2020. We acquired her for $67,000 at Keeneland November in 2014. Plus One is currently in foal to Tapit and we are obviously very excited to have her booked to the phenomenal Gun Runner. Gun Runner has already sired Echo Zulu (GI), Gunite (GI) and Pappacap (GII) from Storm Cat-line mares.

CONTRIBUTING (m, 8, Medaglia d'Oro–Taegu, by Halo), to be bred to Curlin

We acquired Contributing for $500,000 at Keeneland November 2020, in foal to Speightstown. She's a gorgeous mare who had a lot of speed, and her pedigree is phenomenal–the first dam fills the whole page. Her sister Classic Elegance (Carson City) was a Grade II winner and multiple stakes producer; she also has three other half-sisters that are stakes producers, including El Fasto (El Prado {Ire}), the dam of GI Kentucky Oaks winner Believe You Can (Proud Citizen).

Contributing has a yearling Speightstown colt we are very excited about and look forward to bringing him to the yearling sales this fall. She is currently in foal to Justify, who we expect to have great success with his early crops both here and around the world. We love the physical match with Curlin and it gives her another great chance at throwing a runner.

Chilean Group 1 Winner First Constitution Goes Wire-To-Wire In Aqueduct’s Jazil

Don Alberto Stable, WinStar Farm and Twin Creeks Racing Stables' First Constitution made every pole a winning one in Saturday's $100,000 Jazil, a nine-furlong test for older horses at Aqueduct Racetrack.

Trained by Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher, First Constitution, a Group 1-winner in his native Chile, secured his first win in North America with the 6 3/4-length score under Jose Lezcano.

First Constitution broke well from post 2 and was hustled to the front through sharp splits of 23.13 seconds and 46.78 over the fast main track under pressure from Core Conviction. The duo continued their pace battle into the final turn with Why Why Paul Why tracking in third ahead of Twelve Volt Man and Forewarned.

The 5-year-old Constitution chestnut extended his advantage through the final turn as Kendrick Carmouche guided Why Why Paul Why into contention outside of a fading Core Conviction and Forewarned – a 42-1 upset winner of the Queens County last out – launched his trademark late run.

Lezcano continued to ask his charge for more, opening up a 5 1/2-length lead at the stretch call and never looked back en route to a smart score in a final time of 1:47.96. Why Why Paul Why completed the exacta by 10 lengths over Twelve Volt Man.

The prominent score marked the first stakes win of 2022 for Lezcano, who said he felt confident throughout despite the sharp splits.

“He broke sharp enough to be there and he did it very comfortably and solid,” Lezcano said. “He brought his race today. He broke running and finished running. I know I was going pretty fast, but he did it confidently.

“When we got to the backside, [Core Conviction] gave me a half-length in front of my horse and we really got comfortable,” Lezcano added. “When we got to the half-mile he jumped back in the bridle and I knew I had a lot of horse. He's a very nice horse and did everything right to win the race today.”

Forewarned and Core Conviction rounded out the order of finish. Empty Tomb, who will contest next Saturday's Grade 1, $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational at Gulfstream Park, and Splicethemainbrace were scratched.

The victory marked the second Jazil win for Pletcher, who captured the inaugural running in 2015 with Micromanage. Byron Hughes, Pletcher's New York-based assistant said the prominent steer from Lezcano paid dividends.

“The two speed horses scratched and we weren't sure what Kendrick was going to do,” Hughes said. “I think Jose just took matters into his own hands and was a little aggressive into the first turn, but it paid off.”

First Constitution captured the Group 1 Gran Criterium Mauricio Serrano Palma in his native Chile in October 2020. He was transferred to Pletcher last season and kept good company through four starts, garnering a career-best 98 Beyer with a runner-up effort to stakes-placed Speaker's Corner in October at Belmont ahead of a runner-up effort in November at the Big A to Empty Tomb.

Hughes said the nine furlongs proved beneficial for the classy First Constitution.

“He's a Group 1 winner going a mile and three sixteenths in South America, so you would imagine a mile and an eighth wouldn't be a problem up here,” Hughes said. “Todd will get with the ownership group and decide what's next for him.”

Bred in Chile by Haras Don Alberto, First Constitution banked $55,000 in victory while improving his record to 9-4-2-2. He returned $7.90 for a $2 win bet.

Live racing resumes Sunday at the Big A with nine-race card, headlined in Race 8 by the $100,000 Busanda – a nine-furlong test for sophomore fillies offering 10-4-2-1 Kentucky Oaks qualifying points to the top-four finishers. First post is 12:20 p.m. Eastern.

Sunday’s Racing Insights: Flashy Fillies Seek Diplomas at Oaklawn

The first of two strong-looking groups of sophomore fillies line up here in Hot Springs. Brad Cox-trained second timer Firewolves (Practical Joke) gets the tepid morning-line nod coming off a runner-up outing over track and trip Dec. 3 that earned her a 75 Beyer Speed Figure. The $140,000 Keeneland September yearling is half to MGSP Tap for Luck (Tapit) and to the dam of GSW/GISP Jeltrin (Tapizar).

Peace Peddler (Gun Runner) set a solid pace in her unveiling Dec. 18 before finishing third behind a pair of pricey foes. A $200,000 KEESEP pick-up, she is out of Canadian champion older mare and MGSW Embur's Song (Unbrided's Song) from the family of Classic winner Exaggerator (Curlin).

Xtreme Gem (Tapit), a daughter of GISW juvenile Gomo (Uncle Mo), also makes her second start. The $475,000 FTFMAR RNA and $625,000 Fasig Midlantic seller (:10 1/5) was fourth after taking some money in an off-the-turfer at Keeneland in October (re-opposing Madelyn's Magic {Hard Spun} was second that day). She now gets the addition of Lasix and blinkers for the Mac Robertson barn.

Among the noteworthy newcomers signed on is Courtlandt Farm's $500,0000 FTKSEL purchase Campaigning (Nyquist). The Steve Asmussen pupil is half to GSP Aurelia Garland (Constitution) out of a daughter of 2002 GII Alcibiades S. winner Westerly Breeze (Gone West).

Alex Venneri homebred Decade of Dreams (American Pharoah) is half to versatile GISW and young sire Midnight Storm (Pioneerof the Nile). Muse (Into Mischief) is out of a half-sister to last year's GI Jockey Club Gold Cup hero Max Player (Honor Code). TJCIS PPs

Alex and JoAnn Lieblong's $475,000 KEESEP acquisition Hot and Sultry (Speightster) leads the split division of the aforementioned sixth race. The Steve Asmussen representative finished up well to be a strong second in the mud here Dec. 18. A half to SW and GSP turfer Tracksmith (Street Sense), her third dam is brilliantly fast GISW and champion Xtra Heat (Dixieland Heat). Chesterette (Practical Joke), who cost $300,000 at OBS April off a :9 4/5 bullet, was fourth in that same race. The $165,000 KEESEP yearling's dam Jenny's So Great (Greatness) was a graded winner on the turf.

Charles Matses homebred Beguine (Gun Runner) was third first out against three-and-ups Jan. 7. Out of a stakes-winning juvenile, she's half to GSW/MGISP Favorable Outcome (Flatter), last year's G3 UAE 2000 Guineas winner Mouheeb (Flatter) and SW/MGSP Bellamentary (Bellamy Road).

Comedy Act (Practical Joke) was fourth behind the subsequent Gowell S. runner-up after setting solid splits at Churchill Nov. 28. She was a $77,000 September RNA and $165,000 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic juvenile (:10 1/5). Little Mombo (Into Mischief) was also fourth on debut after showing early zip–this one locally Dec. 3. Rigney Racing's $500,000 KEESEP buy is out of a stakes-placed turf router from the family of GSWs Nany's Sweep, Economic Model and Well Monied.

Bicameral (Constitution), bought for $100,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Select Yearling Showcase, cuts back after finishing far back on the stretch out Dec. 17. She was previously third in the GI Del Mar Debutante.
