Del Mar, Santa Anita Planning To Ban Thoroughbreds Racing In 1,000-Yard Events At Los Al

With the increasing popularity of running Thoroughbreds in 1,000-yard (approximately 4 1/2 furlongs) mixed-breed races at Los Alamitos, Del Mar's first condition book has stipulated that horses starting in two of those races at Los Al will be banned from racing at the Del Mar meet, reports the Daily Racing Form.

Held under allowance conditions over the past several months, the 1,000-yard races at Los Al have drawn entrants based at Santa Anita, which has, in turn, struggled to attract full fields for its dirt races.

The new policy will be enacted on July 16 at the start of the Del Mar meeting, and will extend through Santa Anita's autumn meet.

The terms in the Del Mar condition book urge trainers to communicate with racing officials at Del Mar, Santa Anita, and Golden Gate before entering at Los Al.

Fan Restriction Forces Oaklawn To Cut Overnight Purses 15 Percent

After Wednesday's announcement that Oaklawn Park will allow a limited number of fans at the 2021 race meet, track president Louis Cella told the Daily Racing Form that overnight purses will be decreased by approximately 15 percent.

“Because we had to restrict our fans, that part of the formula is reduced,” Cella told DRF. “Instead of $700,000 (per day), we'll be at about $600,000. That's still the highest in the nation. No one's close to that.”

Oaklawn's first condition book is being reprinted to reflect the purse changes, but stakes purses won't be changed.

Cella said he hopes wagering numbers from off-track patrons will allow Oaklawn to boost purses early in the meet.

Del Mar Releases Fall Condition Book

Del Mar released the first condition book for the seventh Bing Crosby Season, an eight-day book that will cover the first half of the 15-day meeting, which runs Oct. 31 through Nov. 29. The condition book is available on-line at www.dmtc.com/horsemen/condition-book. Hard copies also are being distributed at racing centers throughout California.

“Our fall meet has just gotten better and better as we’ve gone along,” said Del Mar’s racing secretary David Jerkens. “We’re again putting the emphasis on the two things that have worked very well for us in the recent past–turf racing and 2-year-olds. This first book will get our horsemen through the initial three weekends, then we’ll be out with a seven-day one that will take us to the finish.”

The track will offer 16 stakes worth $2,250,000 during the meet, including nine graded events, headed by the GI Hollywood Derby for 3-year-olds Nov. 28 and GI Matriarch S. for older fillies and mares Nov. 29. The meeting will also feature six stakes for juvenile runners, including a pair of graded grass miles. Additionally, overnight purses will rise by 10% across the board this fall.

Racing will be conducted Saturday and Sunday to open the session, then Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the following three weeks. It will conclude with a four-day week kicked off by the Thanksgiving, Nov. 26. First post will be 12:30 p.m. daily with the exception of Thanksgiving Day, which will offer an early 11 a.m. post.
