New Bay’s Sea Bay Routs Winterfavoriten Field By Nine Lengths

Gestut Winterhauch's 2-year-old colt Sea Bay (Ger) (New Bay {GB}) graduated with a one-length win in his Aug. 22 debut over seven furlongs at Hannover, but slipped to fourth when upped to one mile for Dusseldorf's Sept. 12 Listed Junioren Preis in his only other start. He had finished behind the reopposing Ariolo (Ger) (Reliable Man {GB}) and Millionaire (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) on stakes bow last time, but overturned that form and found plenty more besides to make Sunday's G3 Preis des Winterfavoriten all his own as he took the one-mile Cologne feature in supremely impressive style. Sea Bay charted a wide course underneath the trees, in the wake of Millionaire, along the backstraight and made the cut across to join the main body of the field in second approaching the home turn. Looming large on the bridle as the 69-10 chance's rivals became became increasingly flustered in the straight, he was given a shake of the reins by Adrie de Vries just inside the quarter-mile marker and unleashed immediate acceleration, powering clear as the remainder appeared trapped in slow motion to stop the clock in splendid isolation. Sea Bay finished nine lengths ahead of Schwarzer Peter (Ger) (Neatico {Ger}), sealing a first edition of Germany's most prestigious juvenile contest for trainer Henk Grewe, with Schwarzer Peter's Markus Klug-trained stablemates See Hector (Ger) (Counterattack {Aus}) and Ariolo passing the post a head and 3/4-of-a-length further back in third and fourth. The nine-length winning margin was the largest since Globus (Ger) Areion {Ger}) romped home by 10 lengths in 2008.

“There was plenty of debate in the stable beforehand and his work on Monday was so good that we went into the race with a lot of confidence,” Grewe told GaloppOnline. “It was always the plan to go to the outside, the tactics worked to perfection and he won very impressively at the finish. He thoroughly deserved it and is now entitled to have a winter break.”

Winning rider Adrie de Vries added, “The trainer made a good decision to apply for the outer box. Good horses put you on the right track and, when I came into the straight with my hands full, I only had to press the button and he was gone.”

Sea Bay is the third of four foals and second black-type scorer produced by a winning full-sister to stakes-winning G2 Oleander-Rennen placegetter San Salvador (Ger) (Lord of England {Ger}) and G3 Deutsches St Leger runner-up Saratino (Ger) (Lord of England {Ger}). He becomes the fourth pattern-race winner for his second-crop sire and is a half-brother to last week's Listed Silbernes Band der Ruhr victrix Samoa (Ger) (Jukebox Jury {Ire}) and a yearling colt by Amaron (GB). The March-foaled chestnut's dam Strawberry (Ger) (Lord of England {Ger}) is also kin to G1 Grosser Preis von Berlin hero Sirius (Ger) (Dashing Blade {GB}). Descendants of his stakes-winning fourth dam Shona (Ger) (Windwurf {Ger}) include MGSW sire Sommerabend (GB) (Shamardal), G3 Preis der Winterkonigin winner Sorrent (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}), G3 Hamburger Stutenmeile scorer Cherry Danon (Ire) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}) and last month's Listed Baden-Baden Cup victrix and G3 Preis der Deutschen Einheit placegetter Chilly Filly (Ger) (Makfi {GB}).

Frankel’s Alpinista Downs G1 Preis von Europa Rivals

It's been a season like no other for Kirsten Rausing's Lanwades Stud operation and, fresh on the heels of Zaaki (GB)'s cakewalk in Saturday's G1 Underwood S., the Sir Mark Prescott-conditioned 4-year-old filly Alpinista (GB) (Frankel {GB}) made it a quickfire elite-level double for the nursery, sporting her owner-breeder's colours, in Sunday's G1 59th Preis von Europa at Cologne. The February-foaled grey, second in last term's G1 Yorkshire Oaks, was unbeaten in three prior black-type starts this term and lined up as the 11-10 favourite for this latest outing returning off a G2 Lancashire Oaks win and a comfortable defeat of leading German stayer Torquator Tasso (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) in Hoppegarten's G1 Grosser Preis von Berlin last month. The enigmatic Quebueno (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) was in reticent mood and scratched at the start after refusing to load. Alpinista was steadied off the tempo in third after passing the judge first time as Grosser Preis von Berlin fourth Nerium (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) led the way with a handy advantage from MG1SP G2 Badischen Wirtschaft winner Kaspar (Ger) (Pivotal {GB}) in second. Initiating her pursuit of the clear leader when bounced into second off the home turn, she quickened smartly to seize control approaching the furlong pole and stayed on strongly under continued urging in the closing stages to deny her old foe by 1 1/4 lengths for a second Group 1 triumph. Darius Racing's G1 Deutsches Derby hero Sisfahan (Fr) (Isfahan {Ger}) was doing all his best work at the finish and ran on well from off the pace to hit the line 1 3/4 lengths back in third.

“We're very happy, it's a fantastic family and thanks very much to Miss Rausing for sending us such a lovely filly,” said assistant trainer William Butler. “It's been a very lucky family for the stable, right the way back to Alborada through to Albanova, who won this race in 2004. I was here for that and this is great too. She's done everything we've asked of her this year and that's four runs and four wins. She's won two Group 1s, a Group 2 and a Listed, so we're very, very lucky to have her.” Looking ahead to possible future targets, Butler added, “Coming back to Germany [for the G1 Grosser Preis von Bayern] is an option, as is the [G1 British Champions] Fillies & Mares at Ascot. It could be Munich, but we'll see. The main thing is to get her back home and make sure she's okay. With these fillies, you've just got to make sure they're in good form and they're healthy. When they are, they can do things like this.”

Alpinista, kin to the unraced 2-year-old filly Alpenblume (GB) (Kendargent {Fr}) and a yearling colt by Oasis Dream (GB), is one of 19 Group 1 winners by her sire and the first foal produced by a stakes-winning half to four stakes performers out of MG1SW distaffer Albanova (GB) (Alzao), winner of this in 2004. They include G3 Legacy Cup victor Algometer (GB) (Archipenko), stakes-winning G3 Geoffrey Freer S. placegetter Alignak (GB) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) and multiple stakes winner All At Sea (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}). Albanova is one of four black-type performers thrown by stakes-winning G1 Moyglare Stud S. third Alouette (GB) (Darshaan {GB}), whose descendants also include dual G1 Champion S. heroine Alborada (GB) (Alzao) and stakes-winning G1 Epsom Derby second Dragon Dancer (GB) (Sadler's Wells). Alouette is kin to G3 Doncaster Cup vixtrix Alleluia (GB) Caerleon), herself the dam of G1 Prix Royal-Oak heroine Allegretto (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and G2 Nassau S. winner Last Second (Ire) (Alzao), the latter being the dam of G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulians-winning sire Aussie Rules (Danehill)

Adlerflug’s Mythico Holds On For German 2000 Guineas Glory

Stall TMB's Mythico (Fr) (Adlerflug {Ger}) opened this season with a last-of-eight finish in ParisLongchamp's Apr. 11 G3 Prix Noailles before running second to Best of Lips (Ire) (The Gurkha {GB}) in Krefeld's Apr. 24 G3 Dr Busch-Memorial last time and took advantage as that rival floundered in Monday's G2 36th Mehl-Mulhens-Rennen (German 2000 Guineas) at Cologne to secure Classic glory in game fashion. The March-foaled bay had also finished behind Best of Lips when third in the Rhineland venue's Oct. 11 G3 Preis des Winterfavoriten and closed a four-race juvenile campaign with a first career success in Krefeld's Nov. 15 G3 Herzog von Ratibor-Rennen. Settling into a smooth rhythm under a firm hold in second after breaking on the lead, the 17-5 second favourite powered back to the front passing the quarter-mile marker and had established enough of an advantage in the closing stages to just hold the late rattle of Best Lightning (Fr) (Sidestep {Aus}) by a short head for a career high.

“He was in full swing entering the straight so I didn't dare try and hold him back,” said winning rider Rene Piechulek, fresh from victory in Sunday's G2 Diana Trial and substituting for the injured Maxim Pecheur here. “He responded well to everything I asked in the straight and just kept going. He began to falter in the closing stages and started looking about and shortening his stride. Luckily, we got across the line in just time.”

Mythico becomes the third Classic winner for his sire (by In the Wings {GB}) and is the third foal for Madhyana (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}). That dual winner's first produce is Mythico's full-sister Mythica (Ger), who finished second in both Listed BMW Preis Dusseldorf and Listed Kolner Stutenpreis, and she has an unraced 2-year-old filly by Zelzal (Fr), named Mythicara (Ire), and a yearling colt by Holy Roman Emperor (Ire) to come. Mythico's second dam, Listed Prix Solitude victress Madhya (Gone West), is kin to MGSP Listed Criterium du Bequet victor Wilki (Fr) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and a daughter of G3 Prix Chloe and GIII Noble Damsel H. winner Khumba Mela (Ire) (Hero's Honor), herself the leading performer produced by a daughter of G1 Prix Jacques Le Marois and G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp heroine Luth Enchantee (Fr) (Be My Guest).

Sea the Moon’s Wonderful Moon Takes the Union-Rennen

Sunday’s G2 Sparkasse Kolnbonn Union Rennen at Cologne proved a relatively straightforward task for Stall Wasserfreunde’s Wonderful Moon (Ger) (Sea the Moon {Ger}), who took a step closer to emulating the G1 Deutsches Derby success of his sire with a cosy win. Always prominent off the early crawl under Andrasch Starke, the odds-on favourite loomed wide on the home turn and quickened into the lead from the top of the straight.  Ridden out with hands and heels, he comfortably held Grocer Jack (Ger) (Oasis Dream {GB}) by a half length to confirm the form of the May 8 G3 Cologne Classic.
