Holy Roman Emperor’s Geography Charts Passage To Winterfavoriten Triumph

Stall Hanse's Geography (Ger) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}–Guajara {Ger}, by Montjeu {Ire}) followed up a debut success at Dusseldorf in August with a fifth in Baden-Baden's G3 Zukunfts-Rennen and bounced back to claim a career high in Sunday's G3 Wettstar.de – Preis des Winterfavoriten, Germany's premier juvenile contest, at Cologne.

The 21-10 second choice was the sharpest of seven into stride and tanked along under a firm on the lead from flagfall in this first attempt at this one-mile distance. Shaken up to poach a decisive advantage with 500 metres remaining, he was beyond recall entering the final furlong and kept on strongly in the latter stages to hold the late thrust of Narrativo (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) by a neck. The duo were four lengths clear of the remainder, headed by 2-1 favourite Inside Matters (Fr) (Lope De Vega {Ire}).

“I didn't really want to go to the front and it wasn't the plan to do so, but we got off to a fast start and nobody wanted to take the lead,” winning rider Rene Piechulek told GaloppOnline. “He just did it all by himself. He has a lot of heart, but was unable to show his true value [in the Zukunfts-Rennen] at Baden-Baden. We still don't know what happened there.” Trainer Peter Schiergen added, “He's going on winter break now and we'll see whether or not he'll be one of the leading stayers in the future.”

Pedigree Notes
Geography, who becomes the 56th pattern-race winner for his sire, is the fourth of five foals and first black-type scorer out of Listed Premio Paolo Mezzanotte victrix Guajara (Ger) (Montjeu {Ire}). He is a half to Listed Glasgow S. runner-up Groundbreaker (Ger) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and a weanling colt by Too Darn Hot (GB). The March-foaled bay's second dam, Listed Dortmunder Stutenpreis third Global World (Ger) (Big Shuffle), has produced three stakes winners headed by G3 Frankfurter Stutenpreis victrix and multiple stakes producer Goathemala (Ger) (Black Sam Bellamy {Ire}). She is also the second dam of G3 Meld S.-winning G1 Grosser Dallmayr Preis third Patrick Sarsfield (Fr) (Australia {GB}). Global World is a full-sister to G3 Dusseldorfer Fruhjahrsmeile victor Global Thrill (GB) as well as being kin to six further stakes performers including G2 Maurice Lacroix Trophy victor Global Dream (Ger) (Seattle Dancer). Geography's fourth dam is G3 German 1000 Guineas heroine Grimpola (Ger) (Windwurf {Ger}), whose descendants feature MG1SW Irish Derby-winning sire Fame And Glory (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire) and MG1SW 1000 Guineas heroine Legatissimo (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}).

Zarak’s Straight Powers To Union-Rennen Triumph, Mr Hollywood Second

Gestut Karlshof homebred Straight (Ger) (Zarak {Fr}–Seductive {Ger}, by Henrythenavigator) was back among familiar foe in Sunday's G2 Sparkasse KolnBonn-188th Union-Rennen, Germany's premier G1 Deutsches Derby trial, at Cologne and delivered a powerful performance to garner the 11-furlong feature by daylight.

Straight was steadied in rear from flagfall and was detached from his rivals through halfway. Tanking forward once into the home straight, the 46-5 chance quickened impressively to gain control entering the final furlong and powered clear of his rivals to hit the line with a five-length buffer back to G3 Bavarian Classic victor and 'TDN Rising Star' My Hollywood (Ire) (Iquitos {Ger}). Straight had opened up with a Dec. 3 debut tally going nine furlongs at Baden-Baden before running third upped to 10 back there for the May 20 G3 Derby Trial in his only other start last time.

The win was Andreas Wohler's fifth in the contest, his most recent being with subsequent G1 Deutsches Derby hero Laccario (Ger) (Scalo {GB}) in 2019. “He is still a big baby and has not really matured yet, but today's peformance was excellent,” the trainer said. “Eduardo Pedroza is riding in Italy today, Jozef [Bojko] had ridden him before and it was Bruno Faust's explicit wish that he was to ride the colt.” Bojko added, “I knew I was sitting on a good horse, and everything went really well for him today. He has kept improving all the time and his last fast work was really good, so I had a good feeling that he would run a good race.” Karlshof's Holger Faust continued, “We were really relaxed before the race and planned to give him as easy a race as possible by holding him up and making use of his speed. We now have a good feeling for [the G1 Deutsches Derby at] Hamburg, but the Derby is one hell of a mad race.”

Pedigree Notes
Straight is the eighth pattern-race winner for his sire (by Dubawi {Ire}). Produced by a daughter of G1 Premio Lydia Tesio victrix Sortilege (Ire) (Tiger Hill {Ire}), he is a half to the unraced 2-year-old colt Star Striker (Ger) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), a yearling colt by Brametot (Ire) and a weanling colt by Counterattack (Aus). His dam Seductive (Ger) (Henrythenavigator) is a winning half-sister to last year's G3 Premio Guido Berardelli victor Sirjan (Ger) (Zarak {Fr}). The March-foaled homebred bay's third dam Sahel (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}) is a full-sister to the G1 Deutsches Derby-winning pair Samum (Ger) and Schiaparelli (Ger) and G1 Preis der Diana (German Oaks) heroine and G1 Deutsches Derby second Salve Regina {Ger}). Sanwa (Ger), another full-sister, is the dam of G1 Deutsches Derby hero Sea The Moon (Ger) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) while her descendants include this year's G2 Derby Italiano winner Goldenas (Ire) (Golden Horn {GB}).

Seabhac’s Angers Powers To German 2000 Guineas Glory

French challenger Angers (Fr) (Seabhac–Angel Of Harlem {Fr}, by Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), successful just once in six prior outings, was an almost unconsidered 12-1 chance for Monday's G2 38th Mehl-Mulhens-Rennen German 2000 Guineas and made a mockery of his odds with a power-packed display in the one-mile Cologne Classic. He becomes the second French-trained winner since the race's 1986 reincarnation, named in memory of Gestut Rottgen lynchpin Maria Mehl-Mulhens, and follows in the hoofprints of Alex Pantall's 2013 victor Peace At Last (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}).

Angers backed up a breakthrough success at Saint-Cloud last July with a seventh in Chantilly's Sept. 17 G3 Prix de Conde and closed his juvenile campaign with a third in ParisLongchamp's valuable Haras de Bouquetot Criterium Arqana on Arc weekend. Seventh once more in Saint-Cloud's Mar. 18 Listed Prix Omnium II on sophomore return, he finished a shade over 1 1/2 lengths adrift of subsequent G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains fifth Valimi (Fr) (Teofilo {Ire}) when third in an Apr. 20 conditions heat back at ParisLongchamp last time.

The eventual winner was shuffled back through the field after an alert getaway from an outer stall and was off the pace in seventh until turning for home. Shaken up at the top of the straight, he surged forward into contention and powered clear of toiling rivals once quickening to the fore approaching the final furlong to easily outclass Charlie Johnston trainee Finn's Charm (GB) (Kingman {GB}) by a mightily impressive six lengths. Dhangadhi (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}), representing Peter Schiergen, fared best of the home defence and lost out by a nose for second in a bobber for the minor placings.

“He's a lovely, big horse and gave me a nice feel going down to the start,” said winning rider Andrea Atzeni. “He ran very well in France last time and the trainer Mario Baratti has done a great job in keeping him spot on for this race. He was the best-looking horse in the paddock and he was, by far, the best horse in the race.”

“He's a very strong horse and we came here to win,” insisted trainer Mario Baratti. “He needs a lot of pace, which he doesn't often get in France, and he can be really good when there's a strong pace. It was a very good run behind a very good horse, in a race which is a traditional preparation for the French Guineas, last time. The only concern I had was the good ground as he is probably better on soft ground, but he got the job done.”

Pedigree Notes
Angers, who becomes the second black-type scorer and first Classic winner for his sire (by Scat Daddy), is the sixth of seven foals and one of four winners produced by G3 Prix Miesque third Angel Of Harlem (Fr) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}). He is a half-brother to his once-raced stablemate Anielska (Fr) (Ivawood {Ire}), who ran eighth behind the 'TDN Rising Star' display of Les Pavots (Ire) (No Nay Never) earlier this month. His dam is the leading performer out of Music Express (Fr) (Compton Place {Ire}), herself kin to G3 Grosser Preis der Wirtschaft victor Tahreeb (Fr) (Indian Ridge {Ire}). The January-foaled dark bay's dual stakes-winning third dam Native Twine (GB) (Be My Native) is a half-sister to MGSW G1 Prix Ganay runner-up Alderbrook (GB) (Ardross {Ire}), G3 Minstrel S.-winning sire Restructure (Ire) (Danehill) and MGSP sire Royal Strand (Ire) (Royal Academy).

Mukhadram’s Lady Ewelina Goes 3-For-3 In Cologne Feature

Andreas Wohler trainee Lady Ewelina (GB) (Mukhadram {GB}–Quadri {GB}, by Polish Precedent) closed her unbeaten two-race juvenile campaign with a clear-cut victory Hannover's Listed Grosser Preis der Mehl-Mulhens-Stiftung and made a winning seasonal return in Sunday's G3 Karin Baronin von Ullmann – Schwarzgold-Rennen at Cologne.

The 7-2 chance, who debuted with a 10-length rout at Warsaw in August, was steadied to race at the back of the main cluster in seventh. Gradually improving from halfway, she made relentless headway in the straight to launch her bid approaching the final furlong and was ridden out in the closing stages to prevail by a half-length from G3 Preis der Winterkonigin third Tamarinde (Ger) (Amaron {GB}).

“She really is a classy filly, but may have actually needed this race to bring her forward,” said Wohler. “She is definitely in need of a longer trip, so I am not quite sure about running her in the [G2] German 1000 Guineas.”

Pedigree Notes
Lady Ewelina, the latest of 15 live foals, is one of seven scorers produced by an unraced half-sister to Listed Pretty Polly S. victrix Fashionable (GB) (Nashwan), herself the dam of stakes-winning G1 Prix Marcel Boussac and G1 Irish Oaks placegetter Jack Naylor (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}). Her second dam Fine Detail (Ire) (Shirley Heights {GB}) is a winning half-sister to five stakes performers headed by MGISW US champion Wandesta (GB) (Nashwan). The March-foaled bay, whose third dam De Stael (Nijinsky II) is a full-sister to G1 Coronation Cup-winning sire Quiet Fling (Nijinsky II), is a half-sister to G1 Herbie Dyke S. victor Turn Tide (GB) (Medicean {GB}) and the dual stakes-placed Eva Kant (GB) (Medicean {GB}).
