Sea The Stars Filly Earns Rising Star Tag at The Curragh

She may have been a shade slowly into stride for Saturday's Irish Stallions Farms EBF Maiden at The Curragh, but Moyglare Stud Farm's 2-year-old filly Eclat de Lumiere (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) was motoring at the business end of the seven-furlong contest to earn TDN Rising Star status with a degree of panache and become the 12th 'TDN Rising Star' for her sire. Overcoming a dawdling getaway and an unfavourable outside draw to track the leaders in sixth after the initial strides, the 7-2 chance made smooth headway into contention approaching the quarter-mile marker and kept on strongly once launching her challenge passing the furlong marker to deny the promising effort of Benitoite (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) by a half length.

“She's a lovely filly and she had been working nicely, but she's still a very big immature filly so whether I run her again this year or not is debatable,” said trainer Dermot Weld. “The ground was probably a shade softer than ideal for her and Colin [Keane] just thought she has plenty of pace. If I run her once more again it will be in a stakes race and that will be it. I'll discuss it with her owner Eva Maria Haefner. There is the [G3] CL Weld Park S., but I wouldn't the ground too soft as she's a very good actioned filly. She's a lovely filly for next year. She had the race won from a fair bit out today and is a lovely filly in the making.”

Eclat de Lumiere becomes the seventh scorer produced by a winning daughter of stakes-winning G3 Prix Penelope third Bellona (Ire) (Bering {GB}), herself a half-sister to three black-type performers headed by G3 Prix de Flore-winning matriarch In Clover (GB) (Inchinor {GB}). The April-foaled homebred chestnut, the latest foal for her dam, is a full-sister to G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris victrix Listen In (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) and a half to G1SW Hong Kong champion Dominant (Ire) (Cacique {Ire}), G2 Lennox S.-winning sire Es Que Love (Ire) (Clodovil {Ire}) and Listed Midsummer S. winner Zhui Feng (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}).

Tarnawa Back With a Bang at Leopardstown

Leading up to Thursday's G3 Grant Thornton Ballyroan S. at Leopardstown, Dermot Weld raised concerns that star distaffer Tarnawa (Ire) (Shamardal)) may not be as forward as in previous years, but His Highness The Aga Khan's 5-year-old showed little sign of ring-rustiness and plundered the Foxrock card's 12-furlong feature by daylight. The homebred chestnut enjoyed a banner 2020 season, going unbeaten through a four-race campaign which included wins in the G1 Prix Vermeille, G1 Prix de l'Opera and GI Breeders' Cup Turf. Sent postward as the heavily backed 1-2 favourite, she was settled several lengths off the pace, with just one rival behind, in seventh until improving to go fifth at halfway. Making smooth headway on the bridle in the straight, Tarnawa cruised to the front approaching the final furlong and lengthened clear in imperious fashion to easily account for the overmatched Silence Please (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) by 6 1/2 lengths. Silence Please, in turn, finished 13 lengths clear of the remainder headed by Hector de Maris (Ire) (Camelot {GB}).

“It was her first run back after a long absence and, as you could see, she was carrying a few kilos extra compared to last year,” said trainer Dermot Weld. “I had to be extra careful with her, after the wonderful dry spell that we've had, and my only concern was that I may have left her a little too short. She has not been away to a racetrack and has done all her work at home. I'd love to have got her away about two weeks ago. but it just wasn't possible. She has been training extremely well and has probably strengthened since last year. She just cruised there and I thought she was very impressive. It was always the plan to start here or the [G3] Give Thanks in Cork which she has won the last two years. The forecast was for plenty of rain in Cork so I thought it might be more prudent to come here. It was a very true run race. She is a wonderful mare as she won the Breeders' Cup on firm ground and at Longchamp on heavy.” Looking ahead to targets later in the season, the trainer added, “The [G1 Prix de l'] Arc [de Triomphe] is the plan and the main reason for keeping her in training, while the [G1] Irish Champion probably fits into the programme. The [G1] Prix Vermeille would be a possibility, but the Irish Champion is probably favourite for her next race. This year's crop of horses look outstanding and she has joined an outstanding team of horses to look forward to in the Autumn.”

Tarnawa, half-sister to a yearling filly by Siyouni (Fr), is the first of three foals bred from MSW dual G3 Curragh Cup third Tarana (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}), herself the leading performer produced by G3 Noblesse S. third Tarakala (Ire) (Dr Fong). Tarakala is the best horse out of Listed Oyster S. second Tarakana (Shahrastani), who in turn is the leading representative of Tarafa (Ire) (Akarad {Fr}). Tarafa is a half-sister to five black-type winners headed by G3 Princess Royal S. victress Tashtiya (Ire) (Shergar {GB}), G3 Prix Messidor victor Tassmoun (Kalamoun {GB}) and Listed Chester S. winner Tarikhana (Ire) (Mouktar {Ire}), who in turn is the dam of G1 Prix Royal-Oak hero Tiraaz (Lear Fan). Mehmas’s Beauty Inspire Takes The Anglesey

Hammered down to 1-2 favourite for Saturday's G3 Jebel Ali Racecourse and Stables Anglesey S. at The Curragh following his impressive winning debut over six furlongs here June 25, Beauty Inspire (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) duly landed the gamble after a tussle with Andreas Vesalius (Ire) (Caravaggio) and Hadman (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}). Keen early tracking that duo, the Ger Lyons trainee looked poised for a facile win two out but ultimately had to work to get to the front passing the furlong pole. Grinding it out from there, the Beauty Stable Partnership's chestnut had 1 1/4 lengths to spare over the former in a race marred by the injury to the filly Daisy Peers (GB) (New Bay {GB}). “I was a little bit disappointed he was keen, as beforehand he goes down like a lamb,” commented Keane, who was initiating a group-race double on the card. “He doesn't usually do that at home. He is only a baby and having his second racecourse start, so maybe he was a little bit fresh and eager to get on with it. I was impressed the way he toughed it out considering the way he did it. I'd like to think you would see a better horse the next day with that experience under his belt hopefully.”

Assistant trainer Shane Lyons added, “He wasn't as visually impressive as the first day, but the first day was only a maiden. To be honest, it looks like he hasn't learned an awful lot from the first day. He was very keen in the race and probably disappointed himself a little, as he's a horse that can't hit the front too soon because he's still a baby. He did fight for Colin after. He's a Christian at home and he's obviously a very good horse. We'll take him home and let him tell us when he's ready again. It could be the [G1] Phoenix [at The Curragh Aug. 8] or the [G1] Middle Park [at Newmarket Sept. 25]. He has entries in York as well. Colin said he loved the ground, which is a help. He's a lovely horse, we knew that the first day and we would have been disappointed today if he had been beaten.”

Beauty Inspire is out of Darwell (Ire) (Zamindar), who is a daughter of the G2 Queen Mary S.-placed Ceedwell (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) from the family of the German group 3-winning sprinter Mis Gazon (Ire) (Royal Academy). Her yearling colt is by Dragon Pulse (Ire).

Group 1 Glory At Last For Australia’s Broome

Coming closest in five attempts at group 1 success on his latest in the May 23 G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup, Ballydoyle's Broome (Ire) (Australia {GB}) finally made it count on Sunday leading with every step under Colin Keane in the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud. Sporting the silks of Masaaki Matsushima, the 5-year-old who had been second to Wonderful Tonight (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) in the June 19 G2 Hardwicke S. at Royal Ascot since that narrow Curragh reversal was unperturbed by being asked to take up front-running duties. Stretching his rivals from the top of the straight, the 39-10 shot was typically game as he held Ebaiyra (Distorted Humor) by a length, with Gold Trip (Fr) (Outstrip {GB}) a nose away in third. “Speaking to Aidan beforehand, he said to keep it pretty simple and if nothing was happy to go, to make my own way,” the winning rider commented. “He's a very uncomplicated horse, very genuine and stays well. He pricked his ears and was taking me the whole way and galloped right to the line. He deserved that, as he's been very consistent this year.”

It was in this country that Broome first tried this level when runner-up in the 2018 G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere and after impressive wins in the G3 Ballysax S. and G3 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial the following Spring was fourth and beaten only around half a length in the G1 Epsom Derby. Missing in action after finishing sixth in the G1 Irish Derby, the bay was out twice last term when fourth in the G1 Coronation Cup staged at Newmarket in June and when last of 13 in Ascot's two-mile G2 Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup in October. Kept in training despite those disappointments, he took the Listed Devoy S. at Naas Mar. 28, the Apr. 17 G3 Alleged S. and May 3 G2 Mooresbridge S. at The Curragh before succumbing to Helvic Dream (Ire) (Power {GB}) in a photo in the Tattersalls Gold Cup and finding a real ace in his way in the Hardwicke.

This was due reward for Broome's efforts at a lower level this term and general level of consistency and also a breakthrough for Masaaki Matsushima, whose representative Yasufumi Sawada said, “This is Mr Matsushima's first group 1 win–I just spoke to him on the phone and he is very happy. He is such a brave horse, last year he had problems but he's been in very good form this season and the plan is to go for the [Oct. 3 G1] Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe [at ParisLongchamp] if Aidan is happy.”

Alain de Royer-Dupre is looking at sending the G3 Prix Allez France and G2 Prix Corrida-winning Ebaiyra back down in trip again. “She has run her race and it was very satisfactory, but she does have a tendency to do too much early in her races over a mile and a quarter and a mile and a half so I'd like to see her run in a truly-run mile-and-a-quarter race,” he said. “There are plenty of options, such as the [G1] Nassau [at Goodwood July 29] or the [G1 Prix Jean] Romanet [at Deauville Aug. 22].”

Broome's breakthrough success was coming two weeks on from the Listed Chesham S. win of his highly promising 2-year-old full-brother Point Lonsdale (Ire) and it is not a longshot that the dam's tally of group 1 winners will be increased by this time next year. The mare in question is the Listed National S.-winning Sweepstake (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), who was also placed in the G3 Princess Margaret S. and GIII Appalachian S. and is a granddaughter of the Hesmonds Stud matriarch Galaxie Dust (Blushing Groom {Fr}).

Among her many descendants to make an impact are the G3 Prix de la Nonette winner Dust Dancer (GB), who in turn produced the GII Lake Placid H. scorer Spotlight (GB) (Dr Fong) herself responsible for the G3 Bengough S. winner Projection (GB) (Acclamation {GB}) and the dam of last year's G1 St Leger runner-up Berkshire Rocco (Fr) (Sir Percy {GB}). Dust Dancer is also the second dam of the G1 Phoenix S.-winning sire Zoffany (Ire) and his G2 Futurity S.-winning and G1 Irish Derby-placed half-brother Rostropovich (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), while also included in the dynasty is the G3 Fred Darling S. scorer Bulaxie (GB) (Bustino {GB}), dam of the G2 Premio Lydia Tesio winner Claxon (GB) (Caerleon) who in turn produced the GIII Hillsborough S. winner and G1 Nassau S. runner-up Cassydora (GB) (Darshaan {GB}). Sweepstake's yearling filly is by Lope de Vega (Ire).
