Weekend Lineup: Closing Day At Keeneland, Churchill’s Stars Of Tomorrow

Keeneland's Hagyard Fayette Stakes (G2) on Saturday and Santa Anita's Twilight Derby (G2T) on Halloween Sunday highlight the weekend graded stakes schedule. Additionally, Belmont Park hosts Empire Showcase Day on Saturday, featuring eight New York-bred stakes and Churchill Downs offers Stars of Tomorrow I, an 11-race Halloween Sunday program dedicated exclusively to 2-year-old racing.

Races in this weekend's rundown are listed in chronological order (all times Eastern). Full previews, when available, can be found through the link for each race.

TVG will feature racing from Keeneland, Santa Anita, Gulfstream Park, Laurel Park, Woodbine and more. Fans can tune in on TVG, TVG2 and the Watch TVG app which is available on Amazon Fire, Roku and connected Apple TV devices.

“America's Day at the Races” will be broadcasting live from Belmont Park on Saturday, Oct. 30 on FS1 from 12:30 – 4:00 pm and on FS2 from 4:00 – 6:00 pm. On Sunday, Oct. 31, “America's Day at the Races” will broadcast from Belmont Park on FS1 from 12:30 – 4:00 pm and on FS2 from 4:00 – 6:00 pm.

Friday, Oct. 29

5:16 PM ET – $150,000 Rubicon Valley View Stakes (G3T) at Keeneland on TVG

An overflow field of 16 was entered in the 1 1/6-mile Rubicon Valley View Stakes (G3T) for 3-year-old fillies. Trainer Kenny McPeek is represented by the duo of Crazy Beautiful, a main track multiple Grade 2 stakes winner and Grade 1 stakes placed Kentucky-bred daughter of Liam's Map, and multiple stakes winner Oliviaofthedesert, a Kentucky-bred daughter of the late Bernardini. Undefeated Lady Speightspeare, a Kentucky-bred daughter of Speightstown, won the Natalma Stakes (G1T) over Woodbine's turf course as a 2-year-old and won her only start of 2021 last month over that same course. Trainer Joseph O'Brien sends Queenship (IRE), a winner of three of four lifetime starts, for her first United States race.

Saturday, Oct. 30

5:16 PM ET – $200,000 Hagyard Fayette Stakes (G2) at Keeneland on TVG

Independence Hall, fresh off a runner-up finish to NTRA Top Thoroughbred Poll leader Knicks Go in last month's Lukas Classic Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs, is the morning line favorite in the nine-horse Fayette field. The Kentucky-bred son of Constitution will break from post five under Javier Castellano for trainer Michael McCarthy. Trainer Shug McGaughey has entered Code of Honor, a multiple-Grade 1 winner and earner of nearly $3 million. Tyler Gaffalione will ride the Kentucky-bred son of Noble Mission (GB).

7:08 PM ET – $100,000 Autumn Miss Stakes (G3T) at Santa Anita on TVG

Zero Tolerance, winner of two of three career starts, looks for her first graded stakes win in the one-mile Autumn Miss (G3T) for trainer Peter Miller. The Kentucky-bred daughter of Mizzen Mast rallied late to win the listed Unzip Me Stakes earlier this month over Santa Anita's downhill turf course. Ego Trip (IRE), a maiden in three starts and trained by Brendan Walsh, finished third to Technical Analysis (IRE) in Saratoga's Lake Placid Stakes (G2T) in August.

Sunday, Oct. 31

3:49 PM ET – $200,000 Bold Ruler Handicap (G3) at Belmont Park on FS1

A four-time winner in seven 2021 starts, Plainsman enters the seven-furlong Bold Ruler off a win in the Ack Ack Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs. Trained by Eclipse Award-winning trainer Brad Cox, the Kentucky-bred son of Flatter will visit his sixth track this year. Wonderwherecraigis crossed the line first last out in the Frank J. DeFrancis Memorial Dash Stakes (G3) but was disqualified for interference with a rival in the stretch and placed second. The Brittany Russell-trained gelding has won three of five starts this year.

4:30 PM ET – $150,000 Ontario Derby (G3) at Woodbine on TVG

A field of eight 3-year-olds is entered in the 1-1/8-mile main track Ontario Derby (G3). Ontario-bred Riptide Rock was upset as the favorite by 25-1 shot British Royalty in Woodbine's Breeders' Stakes last month. Sid Attard, a Canadian Hall of Fame inductee, trains the Point of Entry gelding for Stronach Stables. Swot Analysis returned from a nearly 10-month layoff to win a seven-furlong allowance race over Woodbine's All Weather Track in his last start. The Louisiana-bred Anchor Down colt is trained by and will be making just his fifth career start.

8:00 PM ET – $200,000 Twilight Derby (G2T) at Santa Anita on TVG

This year's Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner, Rock Your World, returns to the turf for the first time after beginning his career a perfect two for two on the surface earlier this year. The Kentucky-bred son of Candy Ride (ARG) ran unplaced in both the Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) and Belmont Stakes presented by NYRA Bets (G1) before finishing second most recently to Medina Spirit in Del Mar's Shared Belief Stakes. California-bred None Above the Law enters the 1-1/8-mile Twilight Derby off consecutive wins, including the Del Mar Derby presented by Caesars Sportsbook (G2) most recently. The Karakontie (JPN) gelding has won half of his 10 stars in 2021.

Churchill’s ‘Stars Of Tomorrow I’ Card Features Street Sense, Rags To Riches Stakes

Trainer Dale Romans' promising duo of Iroquois Stakes (Grade 3) third-place finisher Red Knobs, along with impressive maiden winner Howling Time, top an ultra-competitive field of nine 2-year-olds that were entered in Sunday's ninth running of the $200,000 Street Sense at Churchill Downs.

Sunday's 17th annual “Stars of Tomorrow I” program, which features all 2-year-old races, kicks off the 21-day Fall Meet. First post is 1 p.m. (all times Eastern). The 1 1/16-mile Street Sense shares the Sunday spotlight with the $200,000 Rags to Riches, which will also be run at 1 1/16 miles for 2-year-old fillies. The Street Sense was carded as Race 10 at 5:36 p.m. while the Rags to Riches will go as Race 5 at 3:03 p.m.

Inaugurated in 2005, Churchill Downs' “Stars of Tomorrow” programs have helped launched the careers of numerous graded stakes winners, including more than 50 future Grade 1 winners led by Horse of the Year champions Gun Runner (2017) and Rachel Alexandra (2009), Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver (2010), Kentucky Oaks winners Rachel Alexandra (2009), Believe You Can (2012) and Monomoy Girl (2018), Preakness winners Shackleford (2011), War of Will (2019) and Swiss Skydiver (2020), Belmont winner Creator (2016) as well as 2012 Breeders' Cup Classic and 2013 Stephen Foster hero Fort Larned and 2013 champion 3-year-old Will Take Charge.

Albaugh Family Stables' Howling Time, a 2-year-old son of Not This Time, broke his maiden on Sept. 25 at Churchill Downs by 1 ½ lengths in a six-furlong maiden special weight contest. The $200,000 purchase from the 2020 Keeneland September Yearling Sale stopped the teletimer in 1:10.15 to earn a stout 91 Brisnet Speed Rating. Howling Time will be ridden by Joe Talamo from post position No. 6.

Meanwhile, his stablemate, Jim Bakke and Gerald Isbister's Red Knobs, was only defeated by one-length in the $300,000 Iroquois to Major General and Tough to Tame. The chestnut son of Union Rags broke his maiden this summer at Ellis Park by an impressive 6 ¼ lengths. He'll be ridden by James Graham from post 9.

Among the other top contenders in the Street Sense field are Silverton Hill's Kentucky Downs Juvenile Sprint winner Red Danger; Paradise Farms Corp., Skychai Racing and David Staudacher's Kentucky Downs Juvenile Mile runner-up Kiss the Sky; Lucky Seven Stable's Ellis Park Juvenile runner-up Lucky Boss; and Daniel Alonso's 10 ½-length maiden breaker Skippylongstocking.

The complete field for the Street Sense from the rail out (with jockey and trainer): Guntown (Ricardo Santana Jr., Steve Asmussen); Luni Sima (Adam Beschizza, Jack Sisterson); Skippylongstocking (Tyler Gaffalione, Saffie Joseph Jr.); Red Danger (Julien Leparoux, Brian Lynch); Kiss the Sky (Corey Lanerie, Mike Maker); Howling Time (Talamo, Romans); Lucky Boss (Brian Hernandez Jr., Kenny McPeek); Sport Pepper (Florent Geroux, Kerry Zavash); and Red Knobs (Graham, Romans).

The Street Sense and Rags to Riches both serve as the local prep races to the $400,000 Kentucky Jockey Club (G2) and $400,000 Golden Rod (G2), respectively, as part of the “Stars of Tomorrow II” program on Saturday, Nov. 27.

After Sunday's opener, live racing will be conducted on a Wednesday-Sunday schedule with dark days on Mondays and Tuesdays. Most race days feature 10 live races. There will be 11 on Sunday's opener plus a trio of Saturdays: Nov. 6, 13 and 20. Twelve-race cards are scheduled over the final four days, Nov. 25-28.

Meanwhile, Susan Moulton's nine-length maiden winner Sandstone, along with Sekie and Tsunebumi Yoshihara's 7 ¼-length debut hero Yuugiri, headline a compact field of five 2-year-old fillies that were entered in Sunday's ninth running of the $200,000 Rags to Riches at Churchill Downs.

The Rags to Riches, run at 1 1/16 miles, will go as Race 5 of 11 with a post time of 3:03 p.m.

Sandstone, a daughter of Street Sense, broke her maiden on Oct. 3 at Churchill Downs over a “sloppy” surface. The Kenny McPeek-trained filly covered the one-mile distance in 1:37.43 and earned a 90 Brisnet Speed Rating.

Two weeks prior to Sandstone's open-length maiden score, the Rodolphe Brisset-trained Yuugiri cruised to a decisive victory. The homebred-daughter of Shackleford completed the six-furlong maiden special weight contest in 1:09.55 and earned a 95 Brisnet Speed Rating.

Brian Hernandez Jr. will have the return mount on Sandstone from post No. 3 while September Meet leading rider Tyler Gaffalione will pilot Yuugiri from post 4.

The Rags to Riches field also includes Harold Lerner, AWC Stables, Scott Akman, Nehoc Stables, Paul Braverman and Magdalena Racing's Pocahontas Stakes (G2I) runner-up Mama Rina; Joe Sharp's Ellis Park Debutante third-place finisher Manasota Sunset; and Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners' Jessamine Stakes (G2) fourth-place finisher Dressed.

Here's the field for the Rags to Riches in order of post position (with jockey and trainer): Manasota Sunset (Ricardo Santana Jr., Sharp); Mama Rina (Julien Leparoux, Kenny McPeek); Sandstone (Hernandez, McPeek); Yuugiri (Gaffalione, Brisset); Dressed (Florent Geroux, Catalano).

Knicks Go Has Home-Field Advantage In Saturday’s Lukas Classic

Korea Racing Authority's Knicks Go, the top-ranked horse in the NTRA Top Thoroughbred Poll after convincing wins in this year's Pegasus World Cup (G1) at Gulfstream Park and Whitney (G1) at Saratoga, was made the overwhelming 2-5 morning line favorite in Saturday's $400,000 Lukas Classic (Grade 3) at Churchill Downs – his final test before tackling the $6 million Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) on Nov. 6 at Del Mar.

“He's a horse that puts a lot into his training and he's done that leading into Saturday's race,” trainer Brad Cox said. “He's accomplished a lot this year and we believe the Lukas Classic is a good race to compete in prior to the Breeders' Cup. This race doesn't require him to ship and he can run out of his own stall.”

Knicks Go (22-8-3-1—$5,368,995) had a strong 1 ½-mile gallop early Thursday morning prior to schooling in the paddock at 10 a.m. The Maryland-bred competed four times at Churchill Downs while under the care of trainer Ben Colebrook but has not recorded victory beneath the Twin Spires.

Knicks Go is scheduled to face five rivals in the 1 1/8-mile Lukas Classic including Juddmonte's multiple graded stakes winning homebred Tacitus. The gray son of Tapit arrived to trainer Bill Mott's Churchill Downs base earlier in the week from Saratoga. Saturday's race will be the first time Tacitus has competed since finishing seventh in the $20 million Saudi Cup (GI) in February.

The Lukas Classic is carded as the eighth race on Saturday's 11-race program. First post is 12:45 p.m. (all times Eastern) and the Lukas Classic will go at 4:22 p.m. Named after Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas, the race shares the Saturday spotlight with the $300,000 Ack Ack (GIII), which goes as Race 10 at 5:26 p.m.
