Kevin Flanery To Be Honored With Warner L. Jones Horseman Of The Year Award This Saturday

Kevin Flanery, who retired as the 13th Churchill Downs Racetrack President last December, will be honored Saturday with the Warner L. Jones Jr. Horseman of the Year Award at the Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners' 33rd annual awards gala at the Kentucky Derby Museum.

Cocktails begin at 6 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. Tickets are available for $125, which include dinner and drinks, by contacting Marlene Meyer at (502) 458-5820.

The award recognizes individuals for outstanding contributions to Kentucky racing and sharing the passion exemplified by Jones, who spent 50 years on the Churchill Downs board, including eight as chairman during the iconic track's resurgence. Warner Jones – the first, and so far only breeder of a Kentucky Derby, Kentucky Oaks and Breeders' Cup winner – was the inaugural award winner in 1988, six years before his death.

Steve Asmussen, the 2020 recipient, will also be honored since last year's event was not able to be staged.

Bell’s The One, Sconsin Rematch On Tap In Saturday’s Dream Supreme Stakes

Two of the nation's most talented filly and mare sprinters, Bell's the One and Sconsin, will renew their budding rivalry in Saturday's $300,000 Dream Supreme (Listed) at Churchill Downs.

Saturday's six-furlong Dream Supreme will go as Race 10 of 11 with a post time of 5:36 p.m. (all times Eastern). First post is 1 p.m.

Bell's the One and Sconsin have faced one another five times throughout their careers. In their latest renewal, Sconsin bested Bell's the One by a half-length in the $300,000 Open Mind.

Following the Open Mind, Lothenbach Stables' Bell's the One traveled to Keeneland to compete in the $250,000 Thoroughbred Club of America (Grade 2), where she defeated fellow Dream Supreme rival Club Car by a neck. Trainer Neil Pessin opted to not run Bell's the One in last Saturday's $1 million Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1) in lieu of Saturday's race.

Overall, the classy 5-year-old mare has a record of 10-4-2 in 21 starts with purse earnings of $1,336,825. Three of her 10 lifetime victories occurred at Churchill Downs. She'll be ridden by her regular pilot Corey Lanerie in the Dream Supreme from post No. 6.

Lloyd Madison Farm's Sconsin also did not run in the Filly and Mare Sprint. Trained by Greg Foley, Sconsin has been off since her victory over Bell's the One in the Open Mind. The 4-year-old homebred filly will enter Saturday's affair with a record of 5-4-1 in 15 starts with earnings of $783,362. Jockey Tyler Gaffalione will have the return mount from post 4.

The Dream Supreme drew a field of seven fillies and mares. Here's the complete field from the rail out (with jockey and trainer):

Broberg Will Be Allowed To Run At Fair Grounds, Commission Rules

According to bloodhorse.com, the Louisiana Racing Commission ruled on Oct. 26 that despite a ban issued by Churchill Downs Inc., trainer Karl Broberg will be allowed to run his horses at the CDI-owned Fair Grounds so long as he has a valid Louisiana license and is not suspended.

CDI issued the indefinite ban on Sept. 24, revoking Broberg's stalls and banning him from the entry box at all its parent company's racetracks after an incident involving a voided claim of Rockandahardplace on Sept. 18 at Churchill Downs.

A statement from CDI released to the Paulick Report at that time read: “A claim for the 5-year-old gelding was voided after the race by rule when the horse was declared lame by a KHRC veterinarian at the test barn. The horse was returned to his stall by a paid hotwalker, but a subsequent investigation revealed that there was no responsible representative of the trainer on-site to make veterinary decisions or to take appropriate steps to protect the welfare of the injured horse.”

Broberg told the Paulick Report that a veterinarian treated the horse for injury, and he was left in the receiving barn due to being too sore to travel. Rockandahardplace has since been retired from racing.

The commission's ruling is based on due process concerns, arguing that the matter should have gone before stewards in either Kentucky or Louisiana.

‘Very Special Mare’ Got Stormy Records Final Breeze For Breeders’ Cup Mile

On a crisp, fall morning beneath the Twin Spires, $2 million Breeders' Cup Mile (Grade 1) contender Got Stormy along with $2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) competitor Juju's Map logged their final works at Churchill Downs on Friday prior to the world championship event at Del Mar on Nov. 5-6.

Owned by My Racehorse Stable and Spendthrift Farm, Got Stormy had her final career breeze at 7:30 a.m. (all times Eastern) under jockey Declan Carroll. The duo cruised a half-mile in :48.60. Two hours earlier, Albaugh Family Stables' Juju's Map clipped five furlongs in :59.60 with jockey Florent Geroux in the saddle outside of stablemate Matera (five furlongs, :59.80).

Got Stormy, a multiple Grade 1-winning mare by Get Stormy, finished second in the 2019 Breeders' Cup Mile at Santa Anita.

“We had some rain in the area but the track was really good so I decided to move her work up a day,” trainer Mark Casse's assistant David Carroll said. “Sometimes you see with older mares that they may take a step back from their younger campaigns but she has been doing great. I'm really excited the way she's coming into the Breeders' Cup. She's a very special mare to all of us.”

Got Stormy, along with about 12 other locally-based Breeders' Cup contenders, will ship to Del Mar on Monday.

Juju's Map completed her major preparation for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies for trainer Brad Cox. A recent winner of the $400,000 Alcibiades (G1) at Keeneland, Juju's Map is one of six local contenders for Cox.

“Today's work was with an older horse in Matera,” Cox said. “She's a stakes winner in her own right so she's a pretty tough workmate. 'Juju' sat just off her and maybe broke about a length behind. She was well in hand throughout the work and it was exactly what we were looking for at this stage. This filly seemed to improve a little bit since her win in the Alcibiades, which is what these horses need to do this time of year leading into the Breeders' Cup.”

Cox won the 2019 Juvenile Fillies with British Idiom but Geroux will be searching for his first victory in the race.

“She worked a really solid five furlongs and it was a really nice move being a week out from the race,” Geroux said. “She was able to stay relaxed throughout the work, which was important when you're working in company. She seems to be coming into the race in great shape.”

There are six Breeders' Cup contenders scheduled to work Saturday morning at Churchill Downs: Essential Quality (Classic), Knicks Go (Classic), Shedaresthedevil (Distaff), Rattle N Roll (Juvenile), Ready to Purrform (Juvenile Turf) and Turnerloose (Juvenile Fillies Turf).
