No Problems For Churchill’s Blue Rose Cen

Returning to the same ParisLongchamp course and mile distance over which she had dominated the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac on Arc day, Yeguada Centurion SL's Blue Rose Cen (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}–Queen Blossom {Ire}, by Jeremy) continued where she left off with an all-the-way success in the G3 Prix de la Grotte on Sunday. Sporting a red hood for the preliminaries, the even-money favourite was sent straight to the front by Aurelien Lemaitre and was asked to extend two out. Responding generously without the need for the whip, the bay had 1 1/2 lengths to spare over Lindy (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) at the line, with the outsider Palerma (Fr) (Alex The Winner) 1 3/4 lengths away in third.

“I am delighted with the performance, because she did it with authority from the front,” trainer Christopher Head said. “She had a real campaign as a two-year-old and we had to see how she would run first time out. Now she has a race under her belt, she will come on for the run hopefully and head to the French Guineas [the May 14 G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches] next.” Christophe Ferland said of Lindy, “She has run a blinder, confirming the quality she had shown as a juvenile. She finished strongly, but the winner had first call in front and we will be back for the Poule.”

Blue Rose Cen, who also has another course-and-distance win in her palmares having captured the G3 Prix d'Aumale in September, is out of a 110,000gns 2018 Tatts December purchase by Leopoldo Fernández Pujals' operation. Her only known foal to date, the winner is a granddaughter of the G3 Silver Flash S.-placed Mark Of An Angel (Ire) (Mark Of Esteem {Ire}) whose career successes included the G3 Park Express S. and GIII Santa Barbara S.

ROSA BONHEUR (15, Mr. Greeley-Rolly Polly {Ire}, by Mukaddamah) to be bred to Churchill (Ire)

Rosa Bonheur is the dam of Raging Bull and the dam of a nice horse we have in Europe called Kubrick (Ire). I bred her to Churchill. I like the distance that Churchill is getting and I wanted to breed a grass horse that could really go the distance. I thought the Galileo through Churchill with the speed of Rosa Bonheur would be a good cross.

She is going back to Dubawi because she has a Dubawi colt called Francesco Clemente in Europe with John Gosden who is three-for-three and looks to be a really nice horse.

She won the GI First Lady and a number of stakes (GII Longines Distaff Turf Mile, Pebbles S., Wild Applause S.) Again, I'm breeding miler to miler, both good speed horses, but who rated well.

BEAUTY PARLOUR (GB) (14, Deep Impact {Jpn}-Bastet (Ire), by Giant's Causeway) to be bred to Sottsass

She's the dam of Blowout and some other very nice horses. She's been throwing mile to mile-and-a-sixteenth horses. Sottsass was good to a mile and a half, with a lot of range, very scopey, I thought it would be a good cross.

BONANZA CREEK (Ire) (13, Anabaa-Bright Moon, by Alysheba) to be bred to Frankel

Bonanza Creek is the dam of (G1-placed) Stone Age (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), and I'm going to breed her to Frankel. I like the Galileo influence here; Stone Age is by Frankel, Frankel is also Galileo, and she is a beautiful mare. I just thought Frankel would be great there.

MY SISTER NAT (FR) (8, Acclamation {GB}-Starlet's Sister {Ire} by Galileo (Ire}) to be bred to Dubawi

SISTERCHARLIE (FR) (9, Myboycharlie {Ire}-Starlet's Sister {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) to be bred to Dubawi.

My Sister Nat (Fr) and Sistercharlie (Fr) are both being bred to Dubawi. It's a great, great cross. Dubawi is a great stallion. They are mares that loved to go a distance of ground. Dubawi is a super middle-distance sire. This is a triple A-plus cross. Sistercharlie is current in foal to Dubawi, and My Sister Nat is in foal to Kingman.

QUIDURA (GB) (10, Dubawi-Quetana (Ger), by Acatenango {Ger}) to be bred to Sea the Stars

She is a multiple Group winner in the US. She's by Dubawi, and we're breeding her Sea the Stars. She's a beautiful mare. She's a middle-distance mare. Sea The Stars gets nice long-distance horses as well as milers, and we wanted to breed to Sea The Stars because he's a great stallion, and she was the best mare we thought suited him. She's an exceptional-looking mare, a very choice mare. I bought her after she retired.

PRECIEUSE (IRE) (9, Tamayuz {GB}-Zut Alors {Ire}, by Pivotal {GB}), to be bred to Frankel

We have a really beautiful two-year-old that is by Frankel who is at Ballydoyle, and who is a wonderful example of the horse, so she'll go back to Frankel.

UNI (GB) (9, More Than Ready-Unaided by Dansili), to be bred to Frankel

These are two different-style mares. Both had tremendous speed ratings and both were great middle-distance horses. Frankel gets you great middle-distance horses and great classic horses. I'm trying to breed Classic horses. If they turn out to be sprinters, great, but I try to raise a great mile-and-a-quarter horse. The greatest horse races in the world are the Kentucky Derby and the Breeders' Cup Classic and they're both at a mile and a quarter.

Churchill’s Blue Rose Cen Dominates The Marcel Boussac

After the success for Nurlan Bizakov in the Lagardere, it was the turn of another rising force in French breeding Yeguada Centurion to enjoy the limelight as Blue Rose Cen (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}) lit up ParisLongchamp in the G1 Qatar Prix Marcel Boussac, a “Win and You're In” for the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Keeneland in November.

Coming off a course-and-distance win in the G3 Prix d'Aumale Sept. 8, the Christopher Head trainee had the perfect tow in third as Aurelien Lemaitre contained her enthusiasm. Let loose with 300 metres remaining, the homebred surged clear for an emphatic five-length success from Jim Bolger's outsider Gan Teorainn (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}), with Never Ending Story (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) a short neck away in third.

This was a first Group 1 for Christopher Head and his famous family was around him afterwards. That it came in the year of Freddy's retirement was not lost on his father. “It's a funny thing,” Head, Sr. said. “I'm happy for him. He's the fifth generation and I hope there will be many more successes.”     Christopher, whose filly Tigrais (Fr) (Outstrip  {GB}) had lost her chance when stumbling exiting the stalls in the opener, commented, “The filly is extraordinary. I'll discuss it with her owners, whether we wait until next year or try the Breeders' Cup. I knew she'd be okay on that ground, as she proved last time she handles soft and I think she can go further–2000 [metres] will be easy for her. It's quite a surprise, as this was a very good race with all the Europeans.”

Lemaitre enjoyed one of the most straightforward rides of the afternoon and said, “She is a little Ferrari. She has a huge heart, is handy and tough and you can do what you want with her–nothing worries her. You put her in the back, she drops the bit. When you tighten your heels, she goes!”

The Wertheimers' TDN Rising Star Kelina (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) was disappointing, with the 21-10 favourite fading to last of the dozen runners. Jim Bolger said of Gan Teorainn, who had been second a week previously in the G3 Weld Park S., “One way or another, she's going to be a next-year filly. Today they didn't go very fast and only raced for the final furlong and a half. Next year we will probably start her at a mile and a quarter and she should get a mile and a half.”

Aidan O'Brien said of Never Ending Story, who like the first race's third Breizh Sky ran the fastest split in pursuit, “She ran very well. Ryan thought she was definitely going to be second but she came third, so she might be a little bit weak and will improve through the winter. She could run in the [GI] Breeders' Cup [Juvenile] Fillies Turf Mile, but we'll have to see how she comes out of it.”

Blue Rose Cen's victory in the race that Freddy's sister Criquette holds the joint-record in is a huge moment for Leopoldo Fernández Pujals' operation. Like Belbek's dam, the mare responsible for this luminary was secured at Tatts December, with 110,000gns paid at the 2018 edition of that auction. Blue Rose Cen is the only known foal to date out of Queen Blossom (Ire) (Jeremy), a daughter of the G3 Silver Flash S.-placed Mark Of An Angel (Ire) (Mark Of Esteem {Ire}) whose career successes included the G3 Park Express S. and GIII Santa Barbara S.

Churchill’s The Foxes Wins The Royal Lodge

Just minutes after the fellow Listed Chesham S. flop Crypto Force (GB) (Time Test {GB}) had caused an upset in the G2 Beresford S., King Power's The Foxes (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}) did the same in Newmarket's G2 Juddmonte Royal Lodge S. , a “Win And You're In” for the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf at Keeneland in November. Only ninth in that June 18 Royal Ascot contest, the Andrew Balding-trained 440,000gns Book 1 graduate had come back to break his maiden in a Goodwood maiden also over seven furlongs July 30 and raised his game upped to a mile here. Comfortable sitting last of the quartet despite the moderate pace set by Dubai Mile (Ire) (Roaring Lion), the 17-2 shot was delivered against the far rail by David Probert to gain the edge inside the final furlong and beat the long-time leader by half a length, with the disappointing 2-7 favourite Flying Honours (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) only third, a short head away.

 

“He's matured really well this horse–both mentally and physically. He got into a lovely rhythm and handled the undulations quite well today,” Probert said of the winner who gets his title from the nickname of the Srivaddhanaprabha family's Premier League club Leicester City. “This name was always saved for a special one and they have got one. He's got a lovely temperament and the way he has galloped out today, it won't be a problem going up in trip. He's just a professional.”

Andrew Balding added, “We thought they would go a stronger gallop than that, so he has done very well to come from that position and get the job done. For King Power, we are trying to get them as many chances at Royal Ascot as we could, so we slightly rushed his programme but we always thought highly of him and had to re-group. He has an entry in the Futurity Trophy, but I think he is a horse that will go on and I'd prefer to wait until next year. Where Epsom is concerned, his brother was better over a mile and a quarter than a mile and a half, but that is something we will find out over time.”

Charlie Johnston revealed that Dubai Mile could run again in 2022. “He is still very green. He has won two novices convincingly, but he has not been in the heat of the battle. It was only when the horses came to him that he engaged into top gear. I'm sure people will pick holes in the form, but I think time will tell it was a good race. He is in the Vertem Futurity Trophy and I wouldn't rule that. He could go to the mile-and-a-quarter group one in France and I'd expect we will roll the dice in one or the other.”

The Foxes (Ire) becomes the fifth group winner for his sire and the sixth black-type winner for the stellar producer Tanaghum (GB) (Darshaan {GB}), whose previous best are the G1 Al Maktoum Challenge Round 3 winner Matterhorn (Ire) (Raven's Pass), this stable's G2 York S. scorer Bangkok (Ire) (Australia {GB}) and the G3 Curragh Cup winner Tactic (GB) (Sadler's Wells). Also responsible for Churchill's Listed Her Majesty's Plate-winning 3-year-old Ballydoyle resident Perotan (Ire), she is the second dam of the four-times group 1-winning star miler and sire Ribchester (Ire) and this year's G2 Vintage S. winner Marbaan (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}).

The second dam Mehthaaf (Nureyev), who landed the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas, is kin to the G1 July Cup hero Elnadim (Danzig) and to Only Seule (Lyphard), who produced the G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest and G1 Prix de la Foret heroine Occupandiste (Ire) (Kaldoun {Fr}). She is in turn the dam of the GI Arlington Million hero Mondialiste (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and is the second dam of Galileo's G1 Prix du Jockey Club-winning sire Intello (Ger). Tanaghum's filly foal is a full-sister to The Foxes.
