Beau Recall Runs Down Favored Newspaperofrecord In Churchill Distaff Turf Mile

Slam Dunk Racing and Medallion Racing's Beau Recall was impressive late to upset Saturday's Grade 2 Churchill Distaff Turf Mile at odds of 8-1, defending her 2019 title with a late move to pass 1-2 favorite Newspaperofrecord and win by about two lengths on the wire. Ridden by Manny Franco, the 6-year-old daughter of Sir Prancealot covered a mile over firm turf in 1:35.39.

It was trainer Brad Cox's fifth win in the past two days at Churchill Downs, after saddling a pair of maiden special weight winners in Travel Column and Essential Quality, Monomoy Girl to win the G1 La Troienne, and Shedaresthedevil to win the G1 Kentucky Oaks.

“I thought she had a big shot midway down the lane,” said Cox. “She did exactly what Manny (Franco) was instructed to do. He actually did exactly what Irad (Ortiz Jr.) did in the race last year when she won it. The race in California (the Grade II Yellow Ribbon Handicap) she never had a shot. I want to thank those owners for allowing her to run here at Churchill. She loves it here. We sort of knew coming into this week that it could be a big week for our stable. This is our home and to have this sort of weekend on the biggest stage in the sport is really special.”

Ridden for the first time by Javier Castellano, the Chad Brown-trained Newspaperofrecord went straight to the lead out of the gate. She pulled away to an easy two-length lead around the clubhouse turn, setting her own fractions of :23.99 and :47.93 under a moderate hold. Juliet Foxtrot and Belle Laura were up close in second and third, while La Signare, Beau Recall, and Daddy Is a Legend made up the rest of the field.

Rounding the far turn, La Signare was making up a lot of ground on the outside but never appeared to be a threat to the loose-on-the-lead Newspaperofrecord. The heavy favorite pulled away by several lengths at the top of the stretch, but appeared to idle on the front and was caught by the giant late rally of Beau Recall.

Beau Recall blew by Newspaperofrecord in the final sixteenth, crossing the wire about two lengths in front. Newspaperofrecord had to settle for second, with La Signare checking in third. Juliet Foxtrot finished fourth.

“She knows how to get it done,” Franco said. “I just rode her with confidence. I let her have the target in front of us. I was patient until we got in the clear and that's when I asked her to run and she just exploded.”

Bred in Ireland by Tom Wallace, Beau Recall is out of the Great Commotion mare Greta d'Argent. She was a $19,025 yearling at the Tattersalles Ireland sale, and broke her maiden in her home country before shipping to the United States. Under the care of trainer Simon Callaghan, the mare tallied a Grade 2 victory and a trio of graded stakes placings through November of 2018, and then was transferred to trainer Brad Cox.

Beau Recall won a listed stakes at the Fair Grounds, then was entered in the 2019 Keeneland January sale but did not meet her reserve when bidding stopped at $385,000. She returned to the track and racked up wins in the G2 Distaff Turf Mile and G2 Yellow Ribbon in 2019, and this year's edition of the Distaff Turf Mile is her first victory of 2020.

Overall, Beau Recall's record stands at 8-8-0 from 29 starts for earnings of over $1.4 million.

Brody’s Cause’s Sittin On Go Upsets in the Iroquois

Longshot Sittin On Go blew past his rivals in the stretch to become the first stakes winner for his freshman sire (by Giant’s Causeway), who was campaigned by these same connections. The chestnut was wheeling back on relatively short rest after an off-the-pace 4 1/4-length tally going five furlongs at Ellis Aug. 16–he earned just a 49 Beyer Speed Figure.

Unhurried early and guided a bit off the potentially dead rail, Sittin On Go traveled nicely on the bridle while far back as odds-on Therideofalifetime (Candy Ride {Arg}) zipped away through splits of :23.04 and :45.64. He was still hard held by Corey Lanerie heading around the turn, and circled up very wide into the lane. Midnight Bourbon wrestled the lead away from the chalk at the top of the lane, but Sittin On Go continued to gobble up ground and kick away convincingly to stamp his ticket to the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.

“We’re having ourselves a great weekend,” said trainer Dale Romans, who also saddled ‘TDN Rising Star’ Girl Daddy (Uncle Mo) to a victory in Thursday’s GIII Pocahontas–the equivalent race to this one for fillies–for Dennis Albaugh and Jason Loutsch’s powerful stable. “This horse reminds us a lot of his father. We were pretty confident he’d be able to stretch out from his training and this race set up perfectly for us. We’re on to the Breeders’ Cup.”

Lanerie, who rode Brody’s Cause to an 11-1 victory in the 2015 GI Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity while employing very similar tactics, offered: “He broke really good and put me right where I thought he would be after watching his replay from Ellis Park. Down the backside, he was trying to get out on me. I don’t know why, but he settled in real nice. I was actually going to follow Dale’s other horse [Ultimate Badger {Commissioner}], but I had so much horse, I went to the outside and let him come on. Watching the races, it looked like the outside is the best place to be. I didn’t want any excuses for getting him stopped. I put him in the clear and he was just like his daddy.”

Dennis Albaugh said, “Man, to pick up the Pocahontas and then follow it up with the Iroquois two days later is unreal. We couldn’t be happier. That’s why we’re in the racing business. That horse was unbelievable coming around the turn. I was like, ‘Man, he’s moving.'”

Pedigree Notes:
Brody’s Cause was a $350,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase in 2014, and was third in the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile after his Breeders’ Futurity win. He added the GI Toyota Blue Grass S. at three before checking in seventh in the GI Kentucky Derby. The Spendthrift Farm resident has been represented by three winners thus far.

More Than Ready has now sired the dams of 43 graded stakes winners. Dam Set’n On Ready–whose dam is by Brody’s Causeway’s sire Giant’s Causeway–was a precocious type who was claimed for $35,000 out of her final career start. She hails from the female family of European highweight sprinter Lucayan Prince, MGSW Comic Strip, and graded stakes winner and producer Silver Comic. Set’n On Rady was barren in her next two seasons before producing a Mor Spirit filly this January. She was bred back to Flameaway.

Liam’s Map’s Rushie Too Strong in Pat Day Mile

Rushie, third behind Honor A. P. (Honor Code) and Authentic (Into Mischief) in the GI Runhappy Santa Anita Derby June 6 and behind Art Collector (Bernardini) and Swiss Skydiver (Daredevil) in the GII Toyota Blue Grass S. at Keeneland last out July 11, benefitted from a bit of class relief and cutback in distance to break through at the graded level.

Away in good order from the outside stall, the grey settled fifth early but worked his way up to third and deep as Vertical Threat (Tapiture) set the pace from a hard-held Tap It To Win. Coasting up outside those two nearing the stretch, Rushie was roused to the lead at the three-sixteenths and ran out a convincing winner.

“I had the perfect trip,” said winning rider Javier Castellano. “I was outside and took advantage of it. The way the race developed it was perfect, it was what I was looking for today. We sat two or three lengths off the pace and I kept track of those horses. When we turned for home, I asked him and the horse responded so well. I think the mile was perfect today for the horse. I’m glad we got it done.”

Rushie’s set of past performances is a who’s who of this year’s Triple Crown trail. He was a well-beaten sixth to Thousand Words (Pioneerof the Nile) sprinting at Santa Anita last October, and resurfaced to graduate when stretched out to this distance (but around two turns) back in Arcadia Feb. 1. A distant second to brilliant ‘TDN Rising Star’ Charlatan (Speightstown) in a Mar. 14 optional claimer, he cleared his first-level allowance condition over GII Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth S. runner-up Candy Tycoon (Twirling Candy) at Oaklawn May 2 before his aforementioned graded tries, and had been under consideration for the GI Kentucky Derby.

“Part of me wanted to go with the Derby,” admitted trainer Mike McCarthy. “The horse was training well all along but I can’t thank the owners enough for supporting me. We ended up in the Pat Day Mile and were rewarded with a great effort. Hopefully this race sets us up for a solid fall campaign. I’m not sure which way we go from here. It’s been a long day and a tough day yesterday in the [GI Kentucky] Oaks [with fourth finisher Speech {Mr Speaker}], so we’re just going to savor this one and see what happens down the road.”

Pedigree Notes:
Rushie becomes the third graded stakes winner for second-crop sire Liam’s Map (Unbridled’s Song), who is also responsible for Thursday’s GIII Pocahontas S. runner-up Crazy Beautiful. He’s the first graded winner for Colonel John as a broodmare sire. Unraced dam Conquest Angel, a $300,000 OBS April grad and half-sister to Grade I-winning juvenile Peace and War (War Front), was carrying Rushie when she sold to Ocala Stud for $120,000 at the 2016 Keeneland November dispersal of Conquest Stables. Rushie is her first foal, and breezed in :21 3/5 at last year’s OBS March sale. Conquest Angel has an unraced 2-year-old filly by Uncaptured, a yearling filly by Jess’s Dream and a foal colt by Awesome Slew. She was bred back to Awesome Slew for 2021.

Rushie Finds His Stride At Shorter Distance In Grade 2 Pat Day Mile

Formerly a contender for the 2020 Kentucky Derby, Rushie demonstrated a propensity for shorter distances in his decisive victory in the Grade 2 Pat Day Mile on Saturday at Churchill Downs. Jockey Javier Castellano kept the gray off early pacesetters Vertical Threat and Tap It to Win throughout the backstretch.

In his last start, a third in the Grade 2 Blue Grass, part of Rushie's finish could be attributed to his wide trip but in Saturday's race, his position sitting three wide throughout the Pat Day Mile did not take the bite out of his closing kick. Rushie and Castellano drew even with the early leaders and emerged from the final turn moving forward, holding off a late run from Sonneman at the wire.

Tap It To Win held on for third.

Rushie paid $7.80 to win. The final time for the mile was 1:34.41.

Michael McCarthy trains Rushie for Jim and Donna Daniell. He also has a third-place finish behind Honor A.P. in the G1 Santa Anita Derby earlier this summer.

Ocala Stud bred the son of Liam's Map and Colonel John mare Conquest Angel. Rushie was a $70,000 juvenile purchase by West Bloodstock out of the 2019 OBS March Sale, where he was consigned by Ocala Stud.

Steve Asmussen (trainer runner-up Sonneman and fifth-place finisher Echo Town): “The race didn't set up the way either one of them needed. Echo Town was kind of boxed in there, and then going too slow and then held up. Not ideal for him. Sonneman had trained really well and deserved the chance. But he'd have benefited from more pace as well. I think the two scratches really distorted the race.”

John Velazquez (rider, Tap It to Win, third) — “I thought he ran really well. I was hoping he held on for second but that's all he gave me. I was sitting perfect. I know the horse inside (Vertical Threat) had a little bit of speed so I could concede off him. He sat well, really nice and eventually when they came to me at the three-eighths pole I tried to hurry up and tried to keep my head in front of the other horse (Rushie) but he had too much horse.”
