Kendall-Jackson, La Crema Named Preferred Wines Of The Kentucky Derby

Churchill Downs Incorporated announced Tuesday a four-year partnership that names Kendall-Jackson and La Crema the Preferred Wines of the Kentucky Derby from 2021 through 2024.

Founder Jess Jackson started Kendall-Jackson in the early 1980s and built upon his success to expand and acquire other wineries, such as La Crema. The two sister wineries have been leading the wine category in popularity year after year. Kendall-Jackson has been the number one selling Chardonnay in America since 1992. La Crema played a fundamental role in propelling single-vineyard wines from cool-climate appellations and was an integral part of the Sonoma Coast's rise to winemaking fame as one of the first wineries to craft Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the previously unfamiliar region.

The Jackson family's storied legacy in winemaking runs deep, but their endeavors in the elite horse racing world are lesser known. Jackson ignited a life-long dream in 2005 when he and Barbara Banke, Chairman and Proprietor of Jackson Family Wines, established Stonestreet Farm in Lexington, Kentucky, where they have been named the leading North American commercial breeder of Thoroughbred yearlings nine times.

As part of the 2021 sponsorship, Kendall-Jackson and La Crema will be poured at all Churchill Downs Racetrack events and highlighted in a variety of activations as the Preferred Wines of the Kentucky Derby.

Chantal Sutherland To Begin Taking Mounts At Gulfstream In April

Chantal Sutherland has announced she will return to riding regularly April 1 at Gulfstream Park.

A multiple graded stakes-winning jockey who has ridden more than 1,000 winners, Sutherland will set up business at Gulfstream after spending the winter here galloping horses for trainer Ken McPeek. Sutherland last rode at Turfway Park Dec. 9 after riding at Churchill Downs in November.

Sutherland will be represented by agent John Salamone, who will also book Sutherland mounts for Florida Cup Day March 28 at Tampa Bay Downs.

“I felt like when I got here [this winter] it was like home,” she said. “When I got here, I loved it, and I've had good feedback and vibes from everyone.”

A Sovereign Award winner in her native Canada and a Grade 1 winner on Game On Dude, Sutherland said she's been training for her return and wants to ride as much as possible.

“The combination of boxing, yoga, and meditation has created a great balance of grit and calm that I will leverage to win,” she said in a statement. “The choice to return has been manifesting and growing in my heart over the last year. I want to ride as much as I can before releasing the hold to a sport that is part of me. Someday I will face the expiration date that all jockeys and professional athletes must face, but not yet.”

Sutherland rode at Gulfstream in 2005. In 2016 she returned to Gulfstream to ride Kiss to Remember in the Added Elegance Stakes.

Mister D Stakes, Formerly Arlington Million, To Be Worth $600K

The GI Mister D. S., formerly known as the Arlington Million, will be run with a purse of $600,000 Aug. 14 at Arlington Park, in what is likely to be the final year of racing at the Chicago-area plant. The Million, along with the rest of its traditional accompanying stakes, was scrapped last year due to the uncertainty surrounding racing dates and purses at the track.

Renamed for longtime Arlington owner Dick Duchossois, the Mister D. will be the centerpiece of an eight-stakes card that also includes the 1 3/16-mile GI Beverly D. S. for fillies and mares and the renamed GI Bruce D. S., formerly the GI Secretariat S., for 3-year-olds at a mile.

Churchill Downs Incorporated, the current owner of Arlington, announced plans to sell the track to a commercial real estate firm Feb. 23. The 2021 race meet at Arlington opens Friday, Apr. 30 and will run for a total of 68 live racing days before concluding Saturday, Sept. 25.
