Mandatory Payout Of Derby City 6 On Tap For Sunday

A lucrative total Derby City 6 pool could await bettors Sunday for closing day of Churchill Downs' 12-day September Meet. There's a $67,967 jackpot carryover on Saturday (Races 6-11). The pool will be rewarding Sunday if there's not a single winning ticket Saturday.

The Derby City 6 jackpot pool only is paid if there is a single winning ticket. When multiple tickets contain six winners 90 percent of that day's pool is paid out and 10 percent is added to the jackpot carryover.

Because Sunday is closing day, there will be a mandatory Derby City 6 payout with all monies distributed to ticket holders with the most winners in the six-race series. Sunday's Derby City 6, which only costs 20 cents per combination, is scheduled to cover Races 6-11 starting at approximately 3:18 p.m. (all times Eastern).

Takeout on the Derby City 6 is just 15 percent, which is one of the lowest multi-race wager takeout rates in American racing.

Cox: Classic Distance ‘Is Not Going To Be An Issue’ For Essential Quality After Saturday Work

The action began early Saturday morning beneath the famed Twin Spires as several possible contenders for the Breeders' Cup World Championships recorded workouts including Lothenbach Stables' Bell's the One (four furlongs, :47), Godolphin's Essential Quality (five furlongs, :59.20) and Qatar Racing, Flurry Racing and Big Aut Farm's Shedaresthedevil (four furlongs, :50.40).

Grade 1 Travers Stakes winner Essential Quality, one of the nation's top 3-year-olds, breezed on the outside of allowance winner Colonel Bowman. The duo worked shortly after the track opened at 5:30 a.m. (all times Eastern) and began their breeze from the half-mile pole. They crossed the wire in :46.80 and completed their move around the clubhouse turn.

“Essential is the type of horse that just keeps finding more in every race,” trainer Brad Cox said. “I thought his race in the Travers was a tremendous effort to run down (Midnight Bourbon). He's a really nice horse in his own right.

“The distance in the Breeders' Cup Classic (1 ¼ miles) is not going to be an issue for him. He'll be fit and ready for the Classic. There wasn't a race in between the Travers and the Classic that made a lot of sense for him to run in. We gave him two easy half-mile works prior to (Saturday) and we'll keep tightening the screws each week.”

Essential Quality's stablemate Shedaresthedevil, the winner of the G3 Locust Grove two weeks ago, recorded her first work back since the 1 1/16-mile event. Her owners reported the multiple Grade I winner will be sold at the Fasig Tipton November Sale following the Breeders' Cup.

The speedy mare Bell's the One returned to the work tab following her narrow defeat to Sconsin in the $300,000 Open Mind. Trained by Neil Pessin, Bell's the One worked in company with recent allowance runner-up Audrey's Time. With regular rider Corey Lanerie aboard, Bell's the One started about five lengths behind her stablemate at the half-mile pole and finished even at the wire.

A total of 200 horses recorded published workouts Saturday morning at Churchill Downs. Along with the Breeders' Cup contenders, Kentucky Derby fan-favorite Soup and Sandwich has returned to Louisville. Trained by Mark Casse, the G1 Florida Derby runner-up cruised five furlongs in :59.60. He is scheduled to make his first start since finishing last in the Derby in late October at Keeneland, according to assistant trainer David Carroll.

CHATTALOT (c, 2, Midnight Lute–Mamboalot {SP}, by Kingmambo) ran to 9-5 favoritism to score narrowly first out at Saratoga on opening Saturday July 17, but was let go at 6-1 facing a few formidable foes here. Finding a foothold at the rail while drafting behind the leaders in the garden spot early, the bay was bottled up a bit through a :45.09 half. He muscled his way out into the clear as GII Saratoga Special S. third finisher Nakatomi (Firing Line) took over, and reeled in that foe with a sixteenth to race to remain unbeaten. Co-favored Freelancer (Medaglia d'Oro) was an unlucky third after missing the break and finding some traffic trouble. The winner, who worked in :10 flat at OBS April, is half to Alydarla (Henny Hughes), GSP, $150,650; and A Red Tie Day (Indygo Shiner), SW & GSP, $336,577. Knicks Go Lays Over Field in Lukas Classic

The inaugural running of the GIII Lukas Classic in 2013, contested as the Homecoming Classic, was won handily by the previous year's GI Breeders' Cup Classic hero Fort Larned (E Dubai), who would go on to finish a hard-trying fourth in defense of his Classic title five weeks later. This year's renewal goes through Korea Racing Authority's Knicks Go (Paynter), who is expected to cement his status as the favorite for the championship day feature Saturday afternoon.

An imperious winner of last year's GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile over a Keeneland main track that played to his strengths, the Maryland-bred wired the GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational S. in January to earn a trip to the $20-million Saudi Cup. A tiring fourth over the one-turn, nine-furlong configuration at King Abdulaziz in February, he failed to fire in the GI Met Mile H., also around a single bend June 5, and got the confidence boost he needed with a 10 1/4-length romp in the GIII Prairie Meadows Cornhusker H. going a two-turn mile and an eighth July 10, good for a career-best 113 Beyer. When Swiss Skydiver (Daredevil) elected not to match motors with him in the GI Whitney S. Aug. 7, Knicks Go was loose on the lead and set an aggressive pace, but had plenty to offer late in besting Maxfield (Street Sense) by 4 1/2 solid lengths.

Beaten at odds-on in the GI Woodward S. and GI Jockey Club Gold Cup last season, Tacitus (Tapit) was a non-threatening fourth in last year's Classic and makes his first start since a seventh in the Saudi Cup. He looks to be training forwardly at Saratoga for this return to action.

Independence Hall (Constitution) popped a career-best 104 Beyer when finishing three lengths adrift of Knicks Go in the Pegasus and was most likely in need of the run when fifth to GI Awesome Again S. hopeful Tripoli (Kitten's Joy) in the GI TVG.com Pacific Classic over the Classic course and distance first off a four-month layoff Aug. 21.
